It is not a competition. China too had past decades, just like India. Development is not a monopoly of any country. Foreign interventions in Indian internal matters had partly affected Indian technological advancement. Now the present administration, is on the very right path in transforming the country into a modern society by focussing on improvements in infrastructural facilities, including world class airports, shipping ports, etc.

Jayanandan, As a part of improvements in the infrastructural facilities, India needs more world-class universities besides world class airports. Ever wonder why small countries like Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, France & Singapore excel in technologies, while India, with vast population, falls behind? Indian governments have historically focused on basic literacy, neglecting tertiary studies in sciences, technologies, engineering, & medicine. According to the QS World University Rankings 2024, South Asia compares unfavorably to East Asia in the number of world-ranked universities in STEM & medical sciences. China/HK/Macau(80) + Japan(51) + S. Korea(43) + Taiwan(27) + Thailand(13) + Malaysia(28) + Vietnam(5) + Singapore(4) = 251 India(45) + Pakistan(14) + Bangladesh(15) + Sri Lanka(2) + Nepal(0) + Bhutan(0) + Afghanistan(0) = 76 Despite a population of around 200 crores, South Asia has only 76 world-ranked universities, while Europe alone, with just over 75 crores population, boasts around 501 world-ranked universities according to 2024 QS World University Rankings. MBA Rankings are also worst for South Asia compared to Europe, North America and East Asia. You see, the power of China does not lie in their sweat shops anymore. The power of China lies in their university system with more than 80 globally ranked universities (rankings are from 2024 QS World University Rankings). If someone checks this report of globally ranked universities, one may notice that the nations with highest GDP have most number of globally ranked universities. According to the report, there are 198 globally ranked universities in USA with a population of just 34 crores and only 45 globally ranked universities in entire India with a population of over 140 crores which is more than 4 times USA. In other words, there is one world ranked university for around 17 lakhs people in USA. In India, there is one world ranked university for around 311 lakhs people implying that many states of India don t have a world-ranked university at all transforming smart youth, lacking equal opportunities, into tools of brute-force politics.

@@iam_arnavisaha32you are so wrong. -India already makes its critical chips in SCL Mohali with 180nm technology. -Also there is also a small fab of Isro in bangalore which makes most of the chips for indian satellites and space program and because space needs chips with bigger nodes for radiation resistance isro chips are in cutting edge in space tech. - Also indian government is planning to manufacturer 50-70nm node in SCL while supporting private chip makers while increasing R&D capabilities by the Design linked insensitive Though it may look nothing but we have seen in past india starts late but catch ups rapidly like it overtook china is road network and US in 5G penetration or catching up in space tech so if the indian government is serious it can catch up pretty quick because it already has the VLSI design engineers, contacts like in silicon Valley, market size bigger than china( Recently Reliance Jio overtook china mobile as the worlds largest telecom operator)

Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) established in Mohali, Punjab was one amongst the premier and the oldest Semiconductor manufacturing firms that begun production 2 - 3 yrs. prior to TSMC and played a major role in the success of the American semiconductor firm Micron. The Chief of SCL applauded the growth of Micron and also felt proud to have been a part of it's growth. He remarked that Micron is now setting up shop in India for proliferating production which SCL would have done in the 70's - 80's had the conditions were good for it's growth. The CEO (Chief) of the firm gave an interview to one amongst the international printed media that it was due to a fire tragedy followed by poor funding and plenty of years of misgovernance by previous elected govts. that resulted in performance loss and zilch R&D in the following years. The gap was taken by TSMC followed by ASML dominating the intl. semiconductor and fabrication market. Had SCL been properly funded and guided by a progressive ideology, this wouldn't have happened and Bharat wouldn't have had to go to Micron, Tower Semiconductors, TSMC etc. to get their local demands for R&D and production met. It is a tragic story how "many" of such pioneering Indian firms have had to beat the dust due to Indian governance and bureaucracy.

Taiwan started semiconductor manufacturing in the 1980s, it has almost a 50 year head-start over India. No, India obviously cannot overtake Taiwan in manufacturing semiconductor. But India can give refuge to Taiwanese if and when China attacks Taiwan. India protects Tibentans and it can protect Taiwanese government in exile, if it ever comes to that. Of course, Taiwan also has US protection so maybe India's support isn't as badly needed by Taiwan There is better outcome in India and Taiwan cooperating, these things should not be looked at as "zero sum games". Cooperation leads to better outcomes, and what better way than to cooperate with a fellow democracy?

This is one of the most well researched discussion about India I've seen in a very long time. Especially in this specific context of semi conductors. Quite rare to see a such unbiased outlook from a foreign country even when India is trying to enter their specialization they are not berating India but having a collaborative mindset while correctly calling out the challenges with India and trusting their promise on addressing challenges. Almost no one every talks about how India design ICs. It always goes off the radars thinking there's no semi-conductor industry so it might not be possible. As a lot of India's decisions play out in long term, having 28nm fabs is a right stepping stone, DRAMs, NANDs and other non-CPU chips would utilize the future Indian fabs without eating into Taiwan's essential business and perhaps take off some workload from them. It would take at least a decade or two before India will feel comfortable entering advanced lithography and that's some time to figure out the next step with Taiwan on this industry.

India has been making 190nm chips for a long time, but those are outdated and limited. Science minister has already stated that goal is to make 140nm chips first that goes in for major electronic items and then slowly transition to cutting edge 4-8nm chips. India has already the talent in design side, production side is limited to non-existent now. But that will change very rapidly as most of the things that are happening in India now.
