Wow you really are introverted, Prozzie, judging from the way you dodge the eye contact. Great job stepping out of comfort zone though. Second (or third) times a charm!
Prozzie, I understand your situation completely. Your Mandarin is FUNCTIONAL. You aren’t going to have a long debate in it, but you know how to get your point across.

As someone who has been studying Mandarin part time for about 8 years, I like this video since it shows that not everyone is some language learning prodigy. KZbin is full of people who "became fluent in three months". Most people who aren't either Chinese or Taiwanese and learned mandarin began studying as an adult, and in many cases after graduating university, meaning they already had to maintain full time employment while learning Mandarin. It's not the same as a Chinese or Taiwanese person who learned English since they were a child or in grade school. I had one ex-gf who thought I was a dumbass and would show me youtube videos of people who got fluent super fast, and implied I wasn't as smart since I was still merely conversational in Mandarin after a few years. This video is like the Mandarin language learning equivalent of body positivity.

More Peggy! I've been married to my Taiwanese wife (In the US) and know maybe 10 words. She's not happy with me although my older kids are fluent.
In fact, as Peggy said, although there are not many words in Mandarin, the pronunciation is very good. In fact, your voice when speaking Mandarin is very nice. You can try to speak more Mandarin.

I grew up in the US but in a mandarin speaking family, so while I don't have an accent, our vocabulary level is very similar.. Every time I go to Taiwan, people think I'm fluent but after a minute, I find myself having to explain why I don't understand, and looking up word definitions. I can't talk about anything beyond food, places, and the basics 😆

I subscribed to you because I thought your mandarin pronunciation was decent. It felt like you at least tried to make an effort to learn Chinese while living in China and Taiwan and I respected that. That being said what’s amusing is that my mandarin is complete shit. I’m Taiwanese but grew up in the US. Your mandarin is better than mine. I can speak basic Taiwanese though. Also as a fellow introvert I could feel the awkwardness with you.

11:43 Or rather, if going to a discussion style variety show like WTOSS 姐妹会 or Student 同学来了, it could be a bit tough (even with homework - prepare info/materials done beforehand) if there’s insufficient verbal practice.
It's good to be able to use such a difficult language in real life, and to be able to open a dialog. I can't quite pronounce the name, but I've lost the subtitles, so I hope that Prozzie will feel a sense of accomplishment. ( DeepL translation ) 這麼難的語言,能實戰使用,開啟對話,已經很好了,話說這個名字,個人還不太能念出來,失去字幕就失去影片的一切,希望 Prozzie 會覺的有成就感。( DeepL翻譯 )
