8:59 The concept of voodoo being “African-tribe stuff” is complicated. There is a West African religion called Vodun practiced among many ethnic groups. When slave traders captured members of these groups and shipped them off to placed like Haiti and Louisiana, the practice of this religion had to be fused with Roman Catholicism in order to insure its survival, which gave rise to Hatian Voudou and Louisiana Voodoo.

@ The game is a mishmash of cultures. “Pupununu” sounds vaguely Hawaiian. “Jibolba” sounds like “Xibalba” (SHEE-bahl-bah) is the underworld is Maya mythology while Tlaloc is an Aztec rain god.
@Commander6444Ай бұрын
@@andrewollmann304 And adding to that, it's probably best to come to something like Tak accepting that it will take some degree of artistic license. And honestly, it's for the best that the game mixes inspiration from various cultures together with original ideas. The more you try to tie fictional characters to any one real-life culture, the dicier it gets.
@tenaciousinvestigator4940Ай бұрын
@@andrewollmann304 It's fun to see something like that, the mix-up approach is cool, though I would also love to see something inspired by the African culture and religion; it's a theme that is surprisingly unused. Unfortunetly companies, especially in this day and age are too scared of the bullshit made-up "cultural appropriation" crap. Anyone who actually thinks that potraying another culture is racist is an utter idiot. It's all fine unless you specifically do it in a disparaging way; otherwise you are actually helping to introduce the culture to more people, performing a cultural exchange. Which is a huge shame because the original trilogy was so much better. Nick screwed up so bad with the tv show adaptation, it’s not faithful at all. The original team behind the games gave the tak series this very specific personality that the show completely ignored. The second and third game especially started leaning towards a full on fantasy world. The show could have literally been the next avatar the last airbender for Nick. It still annoys me to this day how bad they fumbled tak
@JohnYourubeАй бұрын
It sucks because the original trilogy has this very specific adventurous vibe and the 2nd and 3rd game started expanding even further with light worldbuilding so taks universe was just starting to feel like this epic fantasy world by the 3rd game. This has got to be the slowest burn on a core memory ever.... but I watched this earlier and was thinking to myself: "why does this game look familiar?" Now, around four hours afterward, I finally remembered playing Tak 1 and Tak 2 as a kid. How have I NOT recommended this to you yet?
@EnigmaBarryАй бұрын
Thank you for looking at Tak. Though it's been two decades since I've played it, it's nice to hear that the game was much more polished than you would expect. I do remember enjoying the boarding segments. The voice actors did a fantastic job on this game and I think are a large reason the comedy can land so well like the Party Juju and Dinky Juju. Though I'm apathetic to grossout humor, I thought the resurrections revenge scene was hilarious. Something about Patrick Warburton's delivery while Tak and Jibolba are passing time playing cards really sells it.

Tak: and the Great Juju challenge was my brother and I's first game as we got it with the PS2 for Christmas and it was challenging, fun and funny when i was 7. I loved this entire series as a child and it still has an important place in my heart.

This is the first game I remember having pre-order bonuses for! I still have the Tak bobblehead that came with the game, standing proudly on my bookshelf. :)

My brother and I were the only ones that had even heard of Tak and the Power of Juju as kid and were big fans of the series so it’s cool to finally see someone talk about it! Solving the puzzles as a kid always made me feel like a genius they were hella fun to solve

This review was great man! Can’t wait for Tak 2 the Staff of Dreams and Tak the Great Juju Challenge. This seriously made me whole day! I hope this trilogy of reviews does really well for not only your channel but inspire more people to play these amazing games!

I’ve been debating starting my yt with a video on this game and a couple other slept on games but this video fulfilled my itch for teaching others about all the stuff I wanted to learn about this game and what I wanted others to learn due to how actually good it was for a nick game. Thank you so much for letting people know how good this game is and how much depth it actually has for a cartoon/show tie in game.

I've been wanting you to cover this series ever since I've discovered your channel. I'm so hyped!

Really cool seeing you cover this game, dude! I had the original trilogy and enjoying the first two games a good bit!

I may not watch every video you upload as you upload it, but every time I do, it's an absolute treat. The whole "Chicken Fight" bit came absolutely out of left field, it was a master class performance in subverting expectations. I remember wanting this game growing up, but writing it off because I was growing out of TV at that same time, and half-expected it to be underbaked like other tv show and movie tie-in games (even though the game came before the show). It's kinda nice knowing that pre-teen me was probably wrong about something

Tak: The Great JuJu Challenge was one on our favorite games when my brother and I were younger. Such a shame they fell off. I can only hope for a return one day just to fuel my nostalgia haha.
@BladeslingersgamepreserveАй бұрын
Ah. I remember Tak. Nick really did put their weight behind this one back in the day, it was every where back in the day. It got so much exposure that I wanted to rent it as a kid a couple of times and my experiences lined up with Mr. Rad's here pretty closely with not really knowing what I am supposed to do early on in the game. I don't recall every finishing it and never had a desire to and after renting the sequel, that was the end of Tak before the TV show came out. I'm probably one of the few people who watched that when it was fresh on TV. I should showcase this over on my channel, it would make for a fun video.

Tak was really one of many diamonds in the rough from my childhood. I remember playing all the main titles save for Staff of Dreams and to this day it's still on my long list of games to play. I'm really glad you're gonna be looking at 'em all, dude!

Seeing James finally talk about this series is magical. God this game was charming from start to finish, and had replay-ability like mad. Id love to see a nitrorad of the series like Ty the Tasmanian Tiger did. Heck, Rugrats: Royal Ransom is also a hidden gem of this time, so seeing a mention here is encouraging.

Haven't clicked on a video faster. Definitely looking forward to seeing you cover the rest of the series, especially great Juju challenge. The co-op was was so good and gave me some nostalgic memories playing it with my cousin. As far as this video goes though, this might be one of your best!

You're not missing anything with the TV series. It was a franchise killer. And I say this as someone who enjoys most Nicktoons, even some that are widely hated.
