In this video, the cavitation/ventilation on the new Suzuki DF6as outboard gets solved. We install a Permatrim hydrofoil and the Prop gets cupped.

Thanks Anton, It makes a great first dinghy as well. Especially if you have a small boat or storage area. It packs away very quickly into small space! I hope to upgrade to a 3.4 metre in Hypalon in the future.

Hi Ken, no problem at all. If I did it again I would get a bigger one. It is so easy to pack down and reinflate that worrying about how much space you have to keep the dinghy is not really a problem.

I did this years ago to my 13' zodiac with 40 hp yamaha up here in Alaska! I'm thinkin your wing you put on wasn't wide enough mine was much wider and didn't have the little turned down sides just a very wide wing! Bow stayed down on take off up on step without hesitation didn't need to go to the prop just get the widest wing you can find so's you can fly!!

The problem with the catamaran design is the air from between the hulls gets into the water column where the prop is...with a Zodiac the water is pushed down before the prop, so no air is introduced to the water column. It is a con of the catamaran inflatable design.

G'Day Mate, Great vids! I am thinking of getting one of these babies for a tender to my 32" Cat - but i'm quite restricted length wise: so good to see yours in action. I'll run a 3.3 merc on mine (an old 2-stroke from my current AQUA tender - should go OK until I find some cash to get a DF6 :) Shame I cant put the DF30 from my fishing boat on it! LOL How do you find the Taka in choppy water? do you get drenched with the flow through deck? Cheers -T

@ryan-w 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Troy, The Taka is fine in choppy waters as long as you get your speed right. The longer the Takacat you purchase the better you will deal with choppy water. The open front occasionally lets some water in, in odd occasions, but once you get to know the boat it next to never happens. Wish I could run a 15hp of mine also!!

Hi mate...I got a Solas prop that has a little bit of cupping built into it and has a larger blade diameter. Make sure you install a permatrim to make this prop work properly, otherwise you will get ventilation problems. www.boatid.com/solas-propellers/7-7-8-d-x-6-3-4-rh-rotation-3-blade-aluminum-non-thru-hub-exhaust-propeller-mpn-4011-079-07s.html

Hello Ryan. I have the same issue that you had (subject of post) with my new 3m Takacat and new Suzuki 6HP. I note that you recommend that the Permatrim tab should be fitted as well as the Solas prop. Did you try just the new prop without the trim tab at all? Was it more cost effective to buy a new prop rather than getting the original cupped? Thank you. David
@ryan-w
@ryan-w 4 жыл бұрын
Hi David, I recommend the Solas prop because it has more blade area and has a better shape/design to the stock Suzuki one and includes a small amount of cupping as it is. It was approximately twice the price of having the original prop cupped. The issue of the having the original proper cupped was the pitch, which is how many inches per prop rotation it wants to drive you forward increased too much [about 20% which is a lot of load on a small engine] and it took longer to get on the plane and it would not do so with two adults onboard. The permatrim I found almost fixed the entire issue until there is some wind chop from certain angles and on the permatrim, I have turned the fixing screws upside down since the video I made on installing it. Having the rough surface area of the stems under the permatrim could cause a vacuum behind at speed and cause cavitation again. The manufacturer saw my video and recommended the change.

@@ryan-w Hi Ryan, I'm considering getting one of these set ups for spearfishing from, how much difference did the new prop make, can you give a bit more info on its size, I'm surprised that you said the new prop is bigger, how does that work? from David Stewart - Tauranga
@ryan-w
@ryan-w 5 жыл бұрын
Hi David. One of these would be perfect for a spearfishing platform. Get a longer one if you can afford it. The new prop I am using is a larger diameter, but a lower pitch. The pitch is how much the prop slices through the water on each rotation, its the gap between the start of the blade and the finish...So a larger pitch gives speed at the top end. To much pitch and you will get slip, where the prop loses its grip on the water or its too much effort and the engine can't attain the revs it requires to make maximum horsepower. Larger diameter means there is more area to grip the water, so less slip. The thing you notice the most is you just fly on to the plane, but loose a little top speed. Which is no big deal when its all said and done. The analogy I use when talking to people is like a using a screw in wood and its about finding the correct balance. If I did this exercise again I would have got a 3.4 metre and a 15hp Suzuki two stroke [33kgs].

I ordered A Takacat 300LXO a few days ago. I haven't got an engine for it yet. It's winter here in the UK so I'm not in too much of a rush. The boat will be mostly used with 2 people and a coolbox full of food and beer. The plan is to take it across to Europe in my 110 Land Rover, so I want to keep thinks reasonably compact and light. What HP engine would you recommend? Thanks for posting these videos, they really helped make my buying decision.
@ryan-w
@ryan-w 4 жыл бұрын
Engine size kind of depends on your speed expectation. A small 2.5-3.3hp engine will get you moving at about 4 knots, which is 4.5 miles an hour roughly. But if you want to plane the dinghy, I would suggest 9.9hp and a two stroke is much lighter than a 4 stroke outboard. You could go with an 8hp, but the price and weight difference is negligible. 9.9hp should get you between 14 - 20 knots or 14-23 miles per hour with the correct prop.
@Edge-dy9fh
@Edge-dy9fh 4 жыл бұрын
@@ryan-w Thanks for the advice. I was hoping 6hp would be enough to get me planing. In the UK 6hp 4 stroke cost around £1000 10hp cost £2000 so quite a big jump in price and weight.

Hi, Great video! I have a taka 3m and 6hp four stroke. Already have the permatrim fitted. Just wondering if what I experience is that same as you.. (couldn't really tell in the video). Im getting a very sudden loss of grip and then motor revs up a little before it bites again? Is this a symptom of the ventilation? It seemed to happen worst when heading down swell. I haven't yet tried all the trim positions...
@ryan-w
@ryan-w 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's exactly the symptoms! Get a lower pitch prop and get it cupped or try the Solas prop I have previously mentioned that as a small amount of factory cupping on it. BTW, trimming the motor up makes it worse and down as far as possible better in my experience.
@gorillaigroup
@gorillaigroup 4 жыл бұрын
@@ryan-w interesting, I tried 1 position down only (from centre) but did not think it had much effect. But I thought down would be better as you said so I'll try fully down next outing. I've read elsewhere that fully trimmed up is best but I'm not sure if they meant bow up or prop up. Anyway I guess I just try them all. With your cupped prop would you say that this issue is gone entirely?
@ryan-w
@ryan-w 4 жыл бұрын
@@gorillaigroup when I say trimming up, I am meaning lifting the prop higher up the water column. The issue is not gone 100% but mostly is. The lower the load on the prop ie; weight on the dinghy or lower prop pitch the less chance of it happening. The Solas prop is my personal preference.
