Take a look at our new trains due to hit the Northern network from December this year. There's still a few things to finish off, but they're looking great.

Now that we're out of the EU (which I don't agree with btw) it would have made more sense to use Bombardier for new trains. They're based in Derby............not Zaragoza. Northern, for once couldn't you have put the cheapest deal aside and used your noddle instead? .....we can't afford to continue having everything you can think of being made for us overseas. Now we're independent we need to think alot more about these things. But people who voted 'Leave' evidently didn't think of 'these' things. Being out of the EU means being more self sufficient. And this means not having other countries to fall back on in making stuff for us, to compensate for out own shortsighted shortcomings. This is real now. Brexit is going to mean this. Wake up everyone.

Hope there’s plenty of standing room. By the times the trains get to Shipley on a morning heading to Leeds there’s never a seat. Just breathing space to stand be nice some mornings and evenings home from work. But hey it’s great to see new trains none the less.
@NorthernRailwayOfficial6 жыл бұрын
Very sorry to hear this. We always put on as many carriages as we can, but at this time all our available carriages are in use across our network. The planning team allocate each day, based on what is available. However the number of available carriages can alter, due to scheduled maintenance, disruption or alterations. We do have brand new trains being built, which have a greater capacity than the trains they are replacing, and will be increasing our peak time capacity over the next couple of years. In the meantime we are also acquiring more carriages from other operating companies. Apologies for the inconvenience caused ^JB
@Dave-em9im6 жыл бұрын
Northern Railway appreciate response. Really do but carriages never vary. I understand train scheduling. Sometimes there isn’t enough room to stand.

@@NorthernRailwayOfficial I understand my area, Scarborough, isn't as much priority as the larger stations. But when I went to Hull, in the morning our train consisted of 4 coaches, two class 158s coupled together to form 4 carriages, and hardly anyone was on board it. But coming back was a crammed dirty 2 car 158! Do you base where you allocate rolling stock wherever is needed, or put it wherever? Obviously it will most likely be the same type of train for that route! But I'm glad we are getting some 155, and 150s to add more variety! Thanks for the improvements!

Anyways speaking about northern we only have pacers be happy you get a 158 and 150 since that's rare afff in lincoln
@stanley36476 жыл бұрын
Voted worst railway line in UK - Licoln-Nottingham ;) But when i must go by train do Nottingham or Sheffield i trying to catch EMT - refurbished class 158 is really nice. And usually 4 cars in set - so always some empty seats to choose. Northern rail has original 158's 2 car sets or sometimes 150/1 at this route. Is lower comfort, because of it's age - looks dirty, but ticket cost same money...

A puff-piece by Northern, but I have no problem with that since these 331s HAVE to be better than the pacers they replace. However, I wouldn't make a virtue of the fact that they are being built outside of the UK. I didn't see any WCs in the video but will presume they've thought of that in the design. Also, a lovingly lingering shot on a UK power point fitted on a "one between two seats" basis is almost bound to lead to problems on crowded trains (try leaving Leeds between 5pm-7pm weekdays) and are at just the right level for a well placed vandal's boot. Even my local bus now provides USB charging points for every seat but I didn't see this in the new Northern stock - a missed opportunity? A positive is the inclusion of a loop for hard of hearing passengers. After years of pacer trains these 331s are a breath of fresh air but sadly not the step change in design for which I'd hoped.

Are northern going to get more 195s and 331s or add carriages to the fleet.
@jameshennighan81936 жыл бұрын
Well, from this clip it looks as though they still have not got the seating right. I'll thought out seat spacings with a failure to ensure that all seating corresponds to a window. Additionally, the poor quality of seating we have come to expect on our modern railways in the UK. The usual rigid framework with very thin cushions for the seat itself. Numb or sore bottoms will be the order of the day with these trains.
@agent_6056 жыл бұрын
The seats use the Fainsa style seating used on ScotRail 156s and 385s, which has much more padding than the Quantum ones used on the 700s, 387s etc

Alasdair Clift I'm not saying the Electrostars are bad, they're my favourite commuter trains ever made. It's just that they are nothing on the 4th generation stock currently being rolled out.
@agent_6056 жыл бұрын
camjkerman There isn’t any 4th gen EMUs. And I’d say the Electrostars are probably much more comfortable than the 700s and Aventras since the Electrostars were ordered before the SRA and now the DfT started regulating everything the TOC does and specifying stupid requirements (like the ironing board seats) on all new train designs, so the Electrostars now have decent seats and are perfectly comfortable for both short and long distance
@camjkerman6 жыл бұрын
Alasdair Clift I refer to 4th generation as if the BR generation scheme had carried on. So 319s are Gen 2, 375s are Gen 3 and 700s are Gen 4. I agree with you on the seating though. Those Fainsa ones are awful.

This isn't related to the Civities, but about the 333s (which also applies to the HEX 332s). There are black marks on the ends of the trains that seem to be where the panels meet. Is this corrosion or something else? Other than that problem they're beautiful trains.
@camjkerman6 жыл бұрын
Those black lines are just because they were built in the old CAF factory from before they got higher end equipment and the tooling that was used meant the panel gaps had to be larger, so its supposed to look like that. Glad you like them though. I like them but not in the Northern livery, there was a concept a while back of one in Network Southeast livery and it was amazing.
@doomotron61606 жыл бұрын
Yeah I do like the later ones and the 333s, I think they're one of the best looking trains in the UK. I also think that they have a shape reminiscent of the Networkers. The picture you were thinking of was from Alternative Railways.
@robtyman42813 жыл бұрын
Wish we could have these trains down south (Southwestern Railway), instead of the new 707's....and soon the even newer 701's . Both have awful 'ironing board' seats. SWR want to replace the 707's ( only introduced three years ago....just before South West Trains or SWT lost the franchise to SWR). These new trains for Northern look so much better, and the seats actually look comfortable! 🙄
@SteamboatWilley6 жыл бұрын
While I'm sure the noise levels and ride quality will be superior to a Pacer, I'm disappointed that Northern have followed the trend for thin "ironing board" seats.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with you there. Northern are currently the company responsible for services on the Windermere branch, serving Oxenholme Lake District to Windermere, and it's a complete shambles. Archaic rolling stock and services regularly cancelled. Visitors arriving here from China, Japan and Europe must feel they have entered a time warp. What a disgraceful introduction to their holidays. We are sick and tired of Northern's "cuando, cuando" protestations.Always jam tomorrow, whilst passengers using First Trans Pennine Express already have a fast, reliable electric service.
@Laurencepro996 жыл бұрын
Meanwhile In London they are getting new 9 car electric trains. Train service is so bad for people who live up North...
@hassanburrows85356 жыл бұрын
Regrettably, Mr Burns, First Trans Pennine were not chosen to contineue to operate the Windermere branch, and through services to Manchester Airport. I do not know who made that decision, but it was a terrible mistake both for local commuters and visitors alike. If we still had FTPE we might have been getting something befitting for the Gateway to the Lakes. Their new bi-modes could do the job very nicely.
@progenlol Жыл бұрын
Northern, I like that you got new trains and all, but can you make sure that your 331 sets on the Liverpool lime street service doesn't block my shot of an ex-LNER Class 43 test train?

Les Bowring You will get heavily refurbished Sprinters to a similar standard of the modern trains. And they’re only just turning 30, trains often last till they’re 50
@soundseeker636 жыл бұрын
Like most modern Euro design units, an ugly looking front end and very stark and clinical interiors.... BUT, they are surely a massive improvement over what we have right now, and for that I welcome them with open arms, even if the design could be much more appealing. The pacers have long outstayed their welcome and anything that brings about their demise can only be a good thing. That said, since they can only run under AC wires, they cannot replace the pacers directly, more electrification is needed.
@agent_6056 жыл бұрын
There is also the 195s which will replace mostly 158s which can then be cascaded onto other routes allowing for Pacers to be replaced, with all remaining trains being heavily refurbished

Bibb Bbvccc The 323s IMO are quite nice, especially if given a good refurb and could potentially run 6 car services on the route (platforms aren’t long enough for 8 car 319s). The 319s are slow and horrible and take ages to accelerate

Agreed but so should the 158s etc be retired they are not exactly adequate for todays ever increasing passenger flow. And these new units do not exactly cater for growth. They should have all been 4 car. It was a shame that the 185s were not built as 4 car too.
@agent_6056 жыл бұрын
Turbostar The 195s and 331s are likely to be extended soon if the DfT allow them to be. The 158s are fine and with a simple refresh work fine for the routes they operate

Compare these type of Trains and the time it takes to Test them out in Spain then on a Test track in the Czech republic then more testing in the UK With the A380 aircraft which takes 6 weeks from leaving the Production line to being delivered to the Airline !?!?
@vladcopeti13575 жыл бұрын
Apparently they've tested the train in Romania because the test track Czech republic has been booked by someone for 5 to 10 years.
@agent_6055 жыл бұрын
The first few A380s had to go through much more rigorous testing before introduction. Also, the railway usually has higher safety standards and concerns as they need to be tested on every line they will operate to make sure they fit on the line and avoid any potential issues with hitting platform edges etc

@agent_6056 жыл бұрын
Merseyrail have only just turned 40 and were properly built and have been heavily refurbished and meet disability requirements. The Pacers were built out of bus shells that had a design life of around 15-20 years instead of 35-40 for the Merseyrail units, and most are still in roughly the same condition with only a repaint of the walls and changing the seat covers since their introduction. Merseyrail are also replacing their fleet from 2020
