Pleroma is another great federated site I touched on in a video of mine. I genuinely think that federated/decentralised sites are the only way for us to take back control of our internet use.

Federation is not safe or secure. Federation is basically trusting several unaccountable and unnamed Oriole with your data instead of one large corporation that is legally accountable.

Great video, my friend! I've been watching the Facebook policy changes lately and its got me wanting to leave the platform altogether. This video was a GREAT, quick overview of whats out there.

Excellent video but you should ask yourself first if you really need all these cool services (decentralized or not) craving for your attention, especially the social network ones. Sometimes, less is more...

I agree. It turns out that all of us being connected all the time is probably not a good idea.

You bring a very good point, but I als would say that with the fediverse and the services that are in that sphere, you will basically allow yourself to ... let got a little bit. What I mean is that centralized services like Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, crave for your attention. They have precise algorithms to determine what will interest you, what will make you click, what will make you express emotions and post stuff. There's not so much of that in Mastodon and services like it. Mastodon doesn't strive on what's worst in humans, and it doesn't need you to react and have an opinion on every subject there is. So, as much as they look like centralized services, they don't crave your attention as much as the centralized do, hence why I think it'll always feel better to use them

As for Diaspora, that one fails of the bat. A social media platform is only as good as the people using it -- no one I want to talk to is on Diaspora. And before I would get to see all the content I want, I'd have to add a LOT of followed tags. Why not just do it the other way around: Show everything except the tags you have blacklisted. The way it is set up right now, you'll never learn anything about a new subject outside your tags.

Its very confusing to use Mastadon mostly because of the domains instead of using one singular domain
@dasgeek2 жыл бұрын
It is more confusing but that's also its greatest strength since no single entity controls the platform.

@@TylerCrowl It does look like a great product. I like how they talk a lot about privacy and security, however, without being open source it's really hard to tell. I would use them over some of the mainstream e-mail clients but I feel more comfortable with ProtonMail.

Yes but with Mastodon aren't you trapped in an echo chamber never challenged by divergeant viewpoints? I have nothing against folks telling things I don't align with. “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.”-Aristotle. One good thing is that there are no advertisements.

EXCEPT these approaches are STILL CENTRALIZING, just on some other big tech companies' servers. They're still MY DATA out of MY CONTROL living on SOMEBODY ELSE's computer NOT in my SOCIAL NETWORK, or they require me to set up my own web server and then manage and secure it myself, controlling access myself, which is a tad much to ask of your uncle Joe or my aunt Mary. Can't we DO BETTER?! Networked application software doesn't NEED to involve AWS nor Google/Alphabet, nor FB/Meta
