This is without a doubt the most serene rendition of Country Roads I have ever heard. Also, the river setting is also very fitting and unique to the usual country and road imagery you normally get with this song. My grandfather died years ago, and we the whole family had to go to his hometown, escorting his body along the way, by car. And it was a VERY LONG TRIP, which took an entire day, from early morning the previous day, to early morning the next day. Throughout the whole trip, I listened to Country Roads on repeat, and the sight of the wilderness around us accompanied by the timeless classic song, as well as the fact that we are bringing back my grandfather back to his hometown to rest, really made me cry a few times throughout the trip. We don't even live in West Virginia, or even the US, but the spirit of this song has always been a universal one, it's the spirit of returning home to where you belong once more, wherever it may be.

Some weeks before my dad passed, my sister and I sat bedside with him at the hospital one night. They had dimmed the lights for the patients to wind down and John Denver started playing on the radio. In that moment I tried to interpret what "home" meant. Was it a song about yearning to return to a physical place, or about taking that final journey at the end of one's life? And then my sister put herself in front of me so my dad wouldn't see me bawling my eyes out. When I hear this song now it gives me peace and clarity. As does your rendition, so thank you for that. ❤

I think this video made me understand the greek concept of nostalgia - "νόστος (nóstos), meaning "homecoming", a Homeric word, and ἄλγος (álgos), meaning "sorrow" or "despair"". Perhaps that's what all these long lost travellers felt desperately looking for a way home, knowing all their effort were most likely in vain. I too, am searching for that what in my heart I know is home. Alas, for now I feel as though I drift in stormy seas or calm planes of water, spreading from horizon to horizon so there is no distinguishing water from sky leaving me lost in endless space. Perhaps one day, I too can revel in the warmth of home but for now my heart shall shed tears for mine and all the other misplaced souls searching for a place they can call home.

West Virginia isn't just the state, it's symbolic for the beautiful side of nature, where you call home, and wherever you feel safe and comfortable. It is the symbolism that represents many things that we all can relate to which gives us nostalgia. Fun fact: the writers of the song hadn't been to Virginia before writing it.
@socalamvs59719 ай бұрын
Not quite. The song was first inspired by driving along rural roads in Maryland, specifically Clopper Road, but the word Maryland didn’t fit. Another option was Massachusetts, the song writer’s home state, but that didn’t sound right either. West Virginia fit really well, even though he’d never been there before. He figured that West Virginia also had the same kind of rural, winding roads that Maryland did. Ultimately the song can be about any place that fills you with a sense of longing to return to, even if that’s a place you’ve never been to before.

COME SING WITH ME! Lyrics: Almost heaven, West Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River Life is old there, older than the trees Younger than the mountains, growin' like a breeze Country roads, take me home To the place I belong West Virginia, mountain mama Take me home, country roads

One day, the world will be different and West Virginia won't be on the map anymore but this song will still be sung. Then, as a Filipino, my children may ask me, "What is West Virginia? " And I'd say, "Once upon a time, in a land far away... "

My dad is still alive but let me tell you back when I was just a kid I would remember working on the farm with my dad, completely in love & needing his guidance & he would turn on the radio to fill our quiet times. This was the 1st country song that came on & made me fall in love with country music. This really makes me miss my dad now that we are several states away from each other. Thank you.
