My jaw actually physically dropped and stayed there when I realized you'd not only translated it into Irish but just how magnificently it WORKS in Irish. This is EXACTLY what we need! This is more than a cover. This is a transformation, and it is beyond amazing. I hope you're stupendously proud of what you've done here, and I hope all those people who keep saying "Irish doesn't work for modern music" hear this and other songs like it and cease their chant. ... I also hope the man himself hears this, if he hasn't already, as I'm confident he'd approve. edit to add: Also, if you read this Colm, any way to get one's hands on the translated lyrics? Would love to learn them.

I'm glad there's still Gaelic speakers around. Unfortunately, there's not many who still speak the language from what I heard.
@lysanamcmillan79729 ай бұрын
First, so you know, it's called Irish. Gaelic is the term for the Scottish language it's related to. That may sound pedantic or such, but it matters. Irish is its official name in the RoI's constitution. In Ireland itself, there are around 1.7 million people who report knowing it well enough to use and about 50-60K in the Gaeltachtai (Irish-speaking areas of Ireland) who do it as their first language. Outside of Ireland, around 22K people use it regularly. It's not dying but it's needing more of a shot in the arm or twenty. This was all as of about 2016 or so.
@caitrionaweafer29938 ай бұрын
There are many Gaelic speakers in Scotland. Gaelic is their indigenous language. There are more Irish speakers in Ireland, our indigenous language. Welsh is the only Celtic language not on the endangered list.
@SockieTheSockPuppet8 ай бұрын
It doesn't help that the Irish Parliament years back seriously tried to ban the use of Gaelic. I still remember a video of them trying to shout down a female politician who was refusing to not speak Gaelic in protest to the attempted ban.
@nilsfaerie5847 ай бұрын
@@lysanamcmillan7972 "Irish (Standard Irish: Gaeilge), also known as Irish Gaelic or simply Gaelic (/ˈɡeɪlɪk/ GAY-lik),[3][4][5][6][7][8] is a Goidelic language of the Insular Celtic branch of the Celtic language group, which is a part of the Indo-European language family." Dude isn't wrong. Actually there are Irish Gaelic and Scottish Gaelic, they both are of Gaelic/Goidelic branch and both use the word "Gaelic" for their names. Speaking of Scottish, the term "Gaelic" were fixed in combination "Scottish Gaelic" only to distinguish it from Scots as Germanic language related to English. So using the word for Irish or Manx languages too isn't a mistake, especially if it isn't science literature or smth.
