This cover genuinely gave me chills. My grandfather loved this song and recently passed away but I know he would have loved this. I'm performing it at his funeral, and hearing you has calmed a lot of my anxieties around the entire situation. Thank you for posting this cover Colm, you are truly a blessing to this platform.

when I listen to Leonard Cohen's performance of this song, the impression I get is of grief that has almost healed. Whereas this one, the grief seems fresh, and that hit me right in my soul. These scars take time to heal.
@petenell58076 ай бұрын
That's because Cohens version is about his joy of getting with a women. It's funny how this song gets 'repurposed ' to mean other things to people

This is one of those songs that is different for every rendition. some are full of grief and regret, some are full of the promise of a new day, some are full of the freshest pain, or some combination of all.

When I sang this at my wife’s funeral I took a page from Leonard Cohen. He kept adding verses to the song and encouraged singers to change or add their own verses to the vocals. If you sang all the un official and officially recognized verses you would have a song almost 20 minutes long! So I added my own last verse… A day will come when I stand before he lord of hosts and he will ask me what moved you most? I will say your hallelujah.

once again with gorgeous control + breath work (plus that insane high note towards the end??). this one felt so raw & vulnerable-exactly how i feel the song should be sung. the "cold and broken"ness of the hallelujah was palpable through the screen. really beautiful work, colm

Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is a masterpiece born from struggle and continuous revision. He started writing it in 1984, laboriously filling notebooks with verses exploring themes of love, faith, and doubt. The song initially met with indifference when included on his album Various Positions, which Columbia Records famously rejected. A cover by John Cale in 1991, followed by a stripped-down version by Jeff Buckley in 1994, slowly brought the song into the spotlight. Today, countless interpretations exist, cementing it as a modern classic - a testament to Cohen's profound songwriting and the song's enduring ability to resonate deeply with listeners. Secondary Source: Geller, Dan, and Dayna Goldfine. Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song. Sony Pictures Classics, 2022.
