Love the videos Terry. In my opinion and that does not count for much but with everything against me in this situation once the cloud had cleared I’d of had a local flight staying close to keep an eye on potential closing fog. You returned safe. Shared the experience and we can all learn something from this.

I would not need or want me or anyone to fly anything of such capabilities as both a danger to self and danger to others BEYOND any we are forced to endure in society. THIS idea is foolhardy and reckless, irresponsible, self-destructive AND completely mistaken/fraudulent about what it takes to safely fly. This is no way to fly. Further, encouraging persons with just enough money to buy this almost impractical concoction AND selling it as such encourages all manner of low-or-no standards, mis-trained, low-time, low-instruction, low/no maintenence pilot-owners too! STOPPIT your irresponsible, unaccountable business-blindness indicates reckless attitude that's frightening to hear among pilot's. You recommend behavior and practices that turn even the best of "nice things" into incomparable tragedy, (just to make sales and sales volume quotas for this month) so mysteriously, but devastating to countless and uncounted innocent-as-can-be- VICTIMS . . . ad infinitum, unless someone like me points it out. That should do it, imho.

A lot of people don't seem to have learned to go to the dead side in these circs. For most of them it's perhaps not a situation which arose in their PPL training so they don't have the muscle memory of doing it. When I did my initial "learning to land" phase of PPL training, which was on a usually downhill and shortish runway, any go-arounds were straight ahead, and climb out as normal: they were either due to being too high / too fast on approach, or other reasons like a vehicle on the runway. I never had a potential conflict with another aircraft taking off ahead of me until long after my PPL course. Fortunately I did know what to do (go deadside and keep the other traffic in view until good separation is ensured)

I am surprised that an experienced pilot like you let himself be socked into the situations you encountered on this day. Seem there was some pressure to make the flight on the day, either real or perceived by you. Some brilliant flying can be done in winter but there are some things you need to be aware of and deal with accordingly. FTAOD 1. Winter days often finish the same as they started - fog and low cloud slot to leave mean the conditions are likely to mean that it will come back early - as was seen 2. Going on a cross country at 6-800ft - leaves no room for anything to be remedied should anything go wrong 3. What if you hadn't been cleared into CAS - would you have been brave enough to declare an emergency or would you have pressed on or turned back? 4. This was not a no wind day but with little convective activity the ground wind could and was very different from the upper winds - did you not talk to the owner and ask him about local wind conditions? 5. Short runways with some obstacles require a steeper approach so you can touch down closer to the start a quarter in on a short runway is not good 6. When there is virtually no wind, always take the longer runway 7. Where would you have gone if your base was socked in - was it 10 min later? 8. All is well that ends well, but it would be better if luck wasn't required. You left yourself very little room to manoeuvre.

Lots of value from reading these accident reports. I get a weekly email from the AAIB containing all that they’ve published in the week and look to see relevant reports but I think I’m in the minority of pilots that do so

I've used MSFS 2020 since it came out as an aid to GA flying. It helped me a lot as a student, particularly for practice of procedures and for cross-country navigation - it's extremely realistic for these kind of things. But it isn't perfect. I use a good quality yoke and pedals setup, but they don't feel like the real thing. Generally, the sim controls are much too sensitive and very difficult to trim out properly, however much you fiddle with all the calibration settings. The elevator in particular is usually too sensitive, making straight-and-level difficult, but also, it has insufficient travel, making it very difficult to pull up into a full stall. I agree that some aspects are more difficult in the sim, including landings, but the difficulties are different from the difficulties of real life. The sim is a valuable tool and I'd highly recommend it especially for any GA students, but I don't actually enjoy using it very much, it is a tool for a job. It does not replicate the joy of real flying very well and the graphics rendering at low level is pretty cummy. It's also useless for ATC comms. Nearly 4 years after it came out, the software just about seems to be stable and most of the functionality you'd expect has been delivered - but it was a painful journey - I won't be rushing to buy FS2024

Ease of flying (controlling) the aircraft is only one aspect to becoming a pilot. You've also got to learn procedures, absorb a lot of info the FAA will test you on, learn airport operations, airport layouts, navigation by air and a big one - learning how to talk to ATC and follow correctly their instructions.

I realize this is an older video, but I must mention how you guys are landing a Sport Cruiser with the nose wheel contacting the surface at about the same time as the main gear (landing "flat"). This is a big time no-no and sooner or later will result in damage to the airplane and your ego. Dial in nose up trim on downwind and keep the nose wheel from making any contact with the surface until you gently let it down as is bleeds off speed after touchdown on the mains. This landing "flat" is a common problem with a lot of pilots and it's asking for trouble. With your camera, practice keeping the nose wheel at least 4 inches above the surface after the mains make contact, then keep it there!
@ShortField10 күн бұрын
Interesting you say that. In my 600 hours and over 700 landings in the SportCruiser I’ve found that it likes to be landed fairly flat. Obviously protecting the nose leg.
@DaleStone-d2q10 күн бұрын
Nose wheel should NOT hit first when landing! This will cause big problems, if it hasn't already. Put substantial nose up trim in it long before the flair.
@dex1lsp10 күн бұрын
This is why I'm not a fan of these casual flight lesson "experiences" for random people who are not enrolled in any kind of formal training, where their controls are activated and they can actually do (potentially deadly) things. Although they ALMOST always go perfectly well, there will inevitably be "passenger-error" incidents from time to time, and eventually, an extremely bad one like this will surely happen at some point. Even with an instructor present, when someone who truly has NO IDEA what they're doing has control of an aircraft, it's too unpredictable and the risk of a serious accident is a very fine line that does not necessarily require going through a stack of Swiss cheese.
@DaleStone-d2q10 күн бұрын
Nose needs to be a lot higher and held there! The nose wheel is not made to land on!
@DaleStone-d2q10 күн бұрын
You're landing too flat! Get the nose up and hold it up. I have over 400 hours in a Sport Cruiser (without an autopilot) and even though it is "pitch" sensitive, it's a good airplane. Too much nit-picking here in my opinion.

The takeoff distance listed on the POH page you showed is based on standard conditions: a pressure of 29.92 in Hg, a temperature of 15°C, and sea level elevation (0m). Given that your runway elevation was higher than sea level, the temperature was likely warmer than 15°C, and the pressure was not at 29.92 in Hg during your takeoff, your actual takeoff distance, especially with a tailwind, should be significantly longer than the distance indicated in the POH. You probably didn’t follow the short field takeoff procedure (12degree flaps and full power before rolling?). Please correct me if I'm wrong!
