Bruno Vassel covered this topic for gliders in one video. This is a great educating video. Great great work Joe, keep it up!

Excellent video. When I had my J3 (I sure miss it!), I would practice the same thing. Great exercise.

This is incredibly insightful!!! Thank you for this. I’ll ask my instructor about it in a couple of hours.

Used to land the Shorts 330 using thrust, manual pitch trim, and rudders only. No yoke input. Pitch Plus Power equals Performance. Piece of cake. Only in light winds, however.
@Bananasssssssss11 ай бұрын
Whats the difference between the 330 and Shorts 360?
@lbowsk11 ай бұрын
The 360 is a slightly larger fecal pellet and has a single tail. I think it carried 39. The 330 carried 30 and had twin tails. I think Vne was 163 (or maybe 167) knots. LONG time ago. UGH. @@Bananasssssssss

Haha! A few months ago I posted a video doing a full pattern with nothing but the throttle and rudder, but... I'm Microsoft flight simulator. Now I'm going to have to try it in my supercub. lol. You should try it with a full pattern!
@Bananasssssssss11 ай бұрын
Yeah I'll do it when there isn't so much traffic in the pattern.

My Uncle Frank was in. B25 over Germany just days after they surrendered. Said they had to hedge hop with it because there was a danger of getting shot at since not all knew it was over

Nice demonstration of alternate means of control. I had a wonderful instructor who taught me the importance of thinking out of the box ( so to speak ) if things go south with the controls. It was interesting, on one flight in a C-150 way back when--- he gave a scenario where some how I lost rudder, aileron and elevator control ( I know this was majorly unlikely ) , what will you do ? Power for altitude, trim for airspeed and as for turning , well, I used the doors, opening the left ( pilot side door a very little caused the plane to slowly yaw to the left, if cracking the right door the plane would slowly yaw right. Landing might not look too pretty but you may walk away-------- pretty------- ( ha ! ). Thanks for the video !!!!

ive done this in xplane 12 on the cessna 152 and always wondered how well would it translate to real life and wow i just watched it happen

Joe, recently I have been watching content on KZbin of guys flying carbon cubs. When they take off, the pull their flap handle down for about 5 seconds and then release it back to neutral. Why are they doing this? The carbon cubs have huge wings and should fly the same as your J3 does in this video. I am not sure if there is a reason for using flaps on takeoff, other than for a short field configuation??? These guys use flaps on EVERY takeoff. I've never flown a cub, although I would love to some day. My grandfather told me lots of great stories about starting off in a J3 cub, his favorite airplane, while he was a mechanic at Spartan Aircraft Company in Tulsa, OK in the late 1930's.
@Bananasssssssss10 ай бұрын
Hey! what they are doing is lowering the flaps right before Takeoff to help them get airborne just a little earlier and once they get airborne they are retracting them to get rid of the drag.
@dr.strangelove773910 ай бұрын
Thanks, I guess that works on airplanes that have large surface area on the wings. A smaller wing would result in the aircraft losing altitude while low and slow. @@Bananasssssssss
