William Powell was about 40 years ahead of his time. He would of given any leading man the dust throughout the 60s 70s and 80s... And when he was younger, shew, what a dynamic actor.

Of course Shelly winters is annoying in this. She plays the character brilliantly- a broken psyche so desperate she’ll do anything or be with anyone to get her happy ending. She appears without morals but it’s just because she’s so broken. I think she made an ordinary film extra good. Where the hell did the other woman come from? Martha? Did I blink and miss where she came into it??

Shelly Winters, so watchable, stunning to look at and just in that short scene, she had more captivating magic than any of the insipid so called female stars of today, I am defending a truly talented and amazing actress of old Hollywood, shame some of the watchers of these classic film noir masterpieces can’t see beyond their own noses and unable to appreciate a natural fine actress as the late Shelly Winters, I’d advise those watchers to stick to the boring unimaginative and totally unstylish films that Hollywood is sadly spouting out these days, Shelly Winters if she was around today could knock the socks off most if not all the sad female so called stars of contemporary Hollywood, where has the real star quality of those glamorous days?, sadly gone I’m afraid.

During the 50s that seem to be the rage. Gary Cooper and Audrey Hepburn. Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron. William Holden and Audrey Hepburn along with Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn. and let’s not forget Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly! There was also Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly in the movie country girl. For which Grace Kelly undeservedly won the Oscar. Another one is Clark Gable and Grace Kelly. But I make an exception with Clark Gable because he was so handsome at any age.

@@eileenhetherington3704 What an extraordinary definition or noir! Two very final and opposite adverbs like "always" and "never" in your sentence - as unusual as my perception of TAKE ONE FALSE STEP as a comedy noir, I suppose. The fact is, Powell tends to lighten even the noirest of moods... and he certainly achieves that in this flick.

You hit it on the head! Shelley Winters in my opinion is the great American actress. And she has the longevity to prove it. Winters has the greatest range in movie roles. She didn’t do accents like Meryl Streep and that’s about the only thing Shelley Winters did not do. But my admiration for her grows every year. She did so many movies that it’s not surprising as in this one to find that Shelley Winters is in it.

She was stunning in her youth. She made every role memorable and could play such a range of characters that folks looked forward to seeing her work. And she worked A LOT! Didn't mind being ugly in a role. She did the gritty as well as the graceful. Roomed with Marilyn Monroe. They shared clothing. MM stretched out the backside and SW stretched out the bodice front. The history of Ms. Winters is quite the romp. IMDb can give you her filmography. Decades of a master at her craft.

She wasn't stunning. Ask a man. I've seen her early publicity pics. I'm not hating on her, I just don't get her appeal as an actress and she certainly wasn't a looker. Compare her to other beautiful actresses from the era and you'll see how she doesn't fit and was not even close to being in their tier as far as looks. And note how she looked as she aged. Other actresses still look like they used to be beautiful in their heyday while Winters looks like she'd be Roseanne's mother, a role she played.

An engaging good story and picture of styles of the 40s-50s; especially clothing. (Men dressed sharp, like gentlemen. Ladies dressed tastefully, like ladies.) But Shelly Winters, contrary to other of her performances, presents a very unsympathetic character, making a mess of everything; especially the end. The movie was made in the early years of the "jet/atomic age"; notice the jet-styled grill vent on the Ford shoebox coupe. It was also the transition from giant thundering howling steam locomotives to sleek formidable diesel-electrics. By way of a big steam engine casually pulling through a crossing in the background of an earlier scene, is a flash-glimpse teaser of something serious sure to come rolling along later; the monster steam engine, now fully fired-up, pulling a heavy freight train at top speed; opposite direction, at top speed, triple-engine diesel-electrics pulling a long passenger train, sounding its ominous horn in duet with mournful blasting whistle of roaring steam engine. Heck of a perfect film noir. Thanks for posting DFF: C.A.

A friendly Hello,'63MGB1'...I admit to having a quite a long list of favorite old films, 😊but ironically, "Night of the Hunter' & "A Place in the Sun" are longtime definite parts of my "list!" HaHaHa...

@@poppykok5 I could never be like that, although several times I was accused of it, mostly by my manipulative husband. But not wanting to be loud and pushy, I am very grateful that women like that exist! They say what we feel unable to say, to the benefit of us all! They paved the way for us, making it acceptable for us to also express our opinions. If it weren't for women like Shelley, we would all still be trapped in a world where women were supposed to keep our mouths shut. So even though I don't want to be seen as she is, I'm so grateful to her, and women like her. I'm also grateful to the movie executives, all men in those days, who allowed and encouraged vocal women like her and Bette Davis to speak up. As much as I hate to say this, if those men had not allowed those women to be seen on screen, we would still be living in the repressive society of yesterday. So I send a big thank you to all the women like Shelly and Bette!

We are all human, and we are all different. Shelly was nominated for the Academy Award four times, and won twice ~ back when 'Oscar" actually meant something.

I liked this film mainly because of the lead players. However, the presentation is less good. I do find it annoying to see it described as an English Full Movie when it's not. It's An American film that employs adulterated English language dialogue and frequently that makes it a disappointment. Also what happened to the opening credits and as with many films the closing credits too are missing. My father used to say 'if a jobs worth doing it's worth doing well' but it seems that standard no longer exists. But thanks for your efforts anyway.

"Vic-xg2kc," "the opening credits and as with many films the closing credits too are missing" -- as "donmoore7785" has helpfully noted, surely it's a protection, a precaution in order to keep the copyright holder(s) from insisting KZbin taking down "Take One False Step." It was NOT done to intentionally upset the viewers. And it's nearly inconceivable that the poster, any poster, of the movie would do such a thing. p.s. I very much enjoyed the story, the acting, the settings and the great location photography, so it saddens me to observe a seemingly endless pissing match over Shelley Winters' appeal or talent, yet primarily, her unavoidable-to-ignore, difficult to digest dangerous and unsightly weight gain.

@@scvandy3129 The owners of KZbin movie channels are, or should be, well aware that chopping up movies does nothing to avoid a copyright strike, any more than the other stupid tricks that have been tried will do. KZbin has long since used computer programs that search the content for copyright infringements. Even tricks that make movies literally unwatchable don't escape the software. Now AI, or artificial intelligence, is used, which is even more sensitive, 1000 times as sensitive. And all channel owners know that, so I find it impossible to believe they think this will help them. I think they mistakenly think that people want this. And I think they never read the comments to find out if they are right. But since commenting is all that we can do, I guess we can only continue. They need to realize that although some info from the opening credits is repeated in the closing ones, there are some facts that are only stated once, in the opening or closing, so we need them both to get all the info.

There are some great fedoras in this movie, however, @1:16:53 ~ story-line credibility takes a nosedive. Even in today's techno world, there's no way the police can trace an article of clothing to a particular identity, apart from DNA, which they didn't have back in the 40s!
@angelinacarranza6417
@angelinacarranza6417 8 ай бұрын
Of course they can! They didn’t use DNA. The scarf had a New York store label. In those days you did the invoice by hand of each article bought and to be paid in the Cash Register. (That was the only way to do inventory after with a copy of the receipt). So they found out who bought the scarf that way. I guess it was supposed to be a posh store, where items were original & unique with few same items sold.

@@angelinacarranza6417 Haha~ you're really reaching just to be contentious. Even if that scarf happened to have a store label, it wouldn't provide police with the name of the purchaser. I was a P.O. for 25yrs and would have loved to have such help in my endeavors!

@@DavidRice111 She's right. Way back when, there were way more hand-written records of pretty much everything. People were more meticulous and detail oriented. Unlike today, where Instagram and Snapchat rule. High end stores would know their customers by name and keep records of what they bought so as to be able to help them better in the future. If you weren't around then, it's a concept that would be hard for you to grasp.
