The Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (@LaincubatorOrg) is a nonprofit organization that works with startups to accelerate the commercialization of clean technologies. Founded as an economic development initiative by the City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles Department of Water & Power, LACI is recognized as one of the most innovative business incubators.
Matt Petersen is president and CEO of LACI. He kicked off UCLA Anderson’s 2024 Energy Innovation Conference with stories about his early awareness of mismanagement of agricultural land in his native Modesto, and how he became involved with government policymakers to protect public parklands and water. As a graduate student, he learned “how to build coalitions, how to build trust, how to get a rag-tag team - everyone from indigenous tribes to environmental justice groups to doctors - to figure out how we could work together.”
Petersen was the city of L.A.’s first chief sustainability officer. He explained that LACI partners with cleantech labs, incubators and accelerators to increase U.S. government and business investment in clean energy solutions. He described how LACI connects with the community, including with children and teens as well as UCLA and other university campuses. “Take responsibility for your corner of the world,” he advises students of all ages.
The 2024 Energy Innovation Conference was presented by the UCLA Anderson Energy and Cleantech Association, UCLA Anderson Center for Impact, Prologis, SoCalGas and Edison International under the theme Accelerating Cleantech Innovation.
