An important thing to consider is that saving, and investing is NOT a zero sum game. If, at the end of 3 years you come up short, you did not fail. If you end up with 50k, or 60k you still have a nice start. I think many people get intimidated by the goal, and think they can’t do it, so why even try. Any savings is better than no savings
@pete56916 ай бұрын
Good point. I think that affects younger people who see retirement as something infinitely far away when in actuality the closer you get the more it looms over you.
@billibarou6 ай бұрын
Totally agree. The key for me was to get to the mindset to start an account that I always put money into and never take out of. Once you start doing that even if you are literally only putting in a penny at a time. You get into the savings mindset. I found that just putting money in I didn't expect to get added up very quickly. Like you get a small refund from something for say $20. Put it in the account. Tax refund. Anything like that put it into the account. Once you get to 100k it gets so much easier to save large sums of money because your money grows tremendously if invested. It's amazing what compound interest can do.

I started investing myself (just a little on the side, it isn’t an impressive amount of money or anything), and I almost pulled out after the 1st month, because it took a little while to start making my numbers go up. I ended the year at over 16%, so I’m happy I didn’t pull it out in full, when it went down right away!

It’s so cliche, but time is your greatest asset, followed closely by diligent saving habits. I’d say it’s more important to religiously save a portion from every check than the amount you save. Of course more is better, but you can only do what you can do.

Thank you. I really like this goal and I definitely want to strive to aim for in 3 to 4 years. I do have a full-time job earning $60k annually (I work in HR), I have two teenagers (age 16 & 13), and there’s no way I have room for a second job. But I can, however, have plenty room for a side hustle. I love to sew and I am seriously considering sewing prom/party dresses. Sewing, it is something I enjoy doing.

Really? All of the lifestyle savings he mentions only get you to $5,640 a year. The other $27,693.33 comes from earnings from work. His manageable step to earn that extra money is work a second job at $20.50 an hour for 20 hours a week on top of earning $75,000 in your regular job.
@soapa42796 ай бұрын
What manageable steps? All he did was basically say you need to save $2700 a month. Then proceeded to use someone making $75K as an example. After tax, that's like $4300 a month. So take out $2700 a month and you're left with $1600 for expenses. Then proceeded to suggest to do side jobs and hustles (which is ironic that means you need to make more than $75K gross)

It is easy to challenge people over reaching their available funds - give up X or Y etc. But many people are already running their budget without any fat to shed. When there is no spare after rent and basic foods, already home cook, never eat out or buy a starbucks - then there is nothing that can be saved. I grew up in that home. My parents avoided debt but we were hand to mouth with zero stuff to 'trim'. Investing for retirement? only the state pension. And side hustles? the gig economy was not as it is now. The options were Avon and Tupperware - mum tried both and like all mlms there was no win there.

Agree with almost everything. I don’t think you should completely stop investing in your 401k. You should at a minimum get the employer match. That’s easily a 50 to 100% return on your money. Not even accounting for compounding. Which the younger you are the more those dollars are worth!

I get the paying off debt but if you get a dollar for dollar match from your employer, you’re missing out on 100% rate of return. At least get the match amount. Even if you’re paying 30%+ APR you will be making 70% more on the match.

According to the video you're $1,300 short and have to get a part time job to make up the $1,300. If you're saving $100,000 and putting 20% down that means the home costs $500,000. I'm all for saving and reducing unnecessary expenses but you don't save this amount of money in 36 months by nit buying your coffee, eliminating a streaming service or gym membership. I love the Ramsey plan, but the one thing I have a hard time subscribing to is how lax you guys are on retirement savings. Pausing contributions for 3 years is huge and an easy way to lose 100k
@nobeliefisok91746 ай бұрын
Its one of the reasons why I mock them in my comments. The Ramsey team consistently ignores the usefulness of debt, and the value of investing early. Its not how much you invest, but how long you do it that matters the most. They harp on and on about paying off debt, and ignore the debt you have to yourself. Saving for a house is a worse investment than savings in a tax advantaged account like an IRA, 401k, or Roth
@pete56916 ай бұрын
@@nobeliefisok9174 Just do the math. If your debt has an interest rate of 7% and you invest instead of paying it off you invest you are only technically making the amount you make over the 7% interest rate.
@jordanmadden73886 ай бұрын
If you have no debt, they don’t make you pause anything before saving. They only have you pause to pay off consumer debt which should not take 3 years. And I’d bet a majority of people that don’t eliminate their consumer debt end up taking out more debt via 401k loans anyways. If the average 20 year old did listened to this advice and started investing at 25 vs say 22 it will not make any material difference. They can retire with $15M on one hand or $20M on the other hand. Who cares, they are rich either way. And one way was safer.

Perhaps the better advice for us regular folks is to try to save 10% of our income/yr. That is on top of your retirement savings you already do. 10% should be a realistic goal for anyone and if saved & invested you quickly see the snowball effect in your favor in a short time. $100k is an arbitrary number but the concept of creating a goal and breaking it into smaller steps is applicable to everyone. Pay yourself first and create a saving/investing habit.

I lost over $80k when everything started to tank. Not because I was in an exchange that went belly up. I was just stupid to hold and because that's what everyone said. I'm still responsible. It just taught me to be a better investor now that I understand more of what could go wrong. It took me over two years of being in the market, I'm really grateful I found one source to recover my money, at least $10k profits weekly. Thanks Brooke Miller.

What I generally don’t like about videos like this: The hypotheticals are usually unrealistic. Like after taxes and whatnot, I don’t even take home $2,700 a month. Most people at most are paying for one streaming service and a lot of people don’t go to the gym and exercise at home (plus let’s be real, gym memberships are scams since they’re unbreakable yearly contracts). I don’t know many people making over $70,000

Very good video, love the topic. One thing I talk about on my channel is that you have to spend as little on the things you buy as possible! Sacrificing the the things you need is not the only solution. Again paying less for things is a solution too, Use Coupons, Wait until things are on sale or clearance too, and lets not forget buying used/preowned. Every penny counts and they do add up. What does everyone think?
