Great band but jury out on arrangement? Maybe gets a bit too far from the tune as written.

On the contrary, I thought the arrangement to be one of the high points. It allowed the band to display its harmonical greatness, something that Duke always liked to do with his band. Fact is, one of Duke's sidemen said they couldn't wait to hear Duke's latest. They knew when returned from lunch, he would be pointing to each section and calling out chords for a tune he had thought up that they should play. The band fellows knew it would be great to hear and play because Duke's harmonies. The same goes for this arrangement ... it is ultra cool and different from that regularly heard. And that's what jazz is about. it bears out changes, doing the unexpected, and on the spot improvisations on a theme. This outing does just that it switches fro the hot and heavy blowing through the roof to the smooth and lovely ensemble jazz band playing, without the soloists alternatively trying to outdo one another through their instruments, Yes. The WDR hit the top of the mast with this outstanding rendition of Strayhorn's masterpiece.One of its best musical arrangements in many a moons.
