Hey, that was fantastic. A great resource. Wish there was a 30 sec "if you missed it" or promo segment that i could show in youth group or the scripture classes i do in High Schools. The whole segment is too long to use in a class setting, but answers questions my students ask. A small segment/promo that says "Hey, this is a question you might have asked. 'Aren't Bible translations different because people are trying to change what the Bible says?' Here we are figuring out why we have so many Bible translations...' with a few short clips of your show and a "here is a link to the full segment of you want to learn more". Keep up the great work, both of you.😊

Thanks, Blake! We recorded all the episodes last May and June as a pandemic project. :) I don't remember the exact order in which we filmed them, but we definitely had some days where our energy levels were better than others. Filming can be grueling!

Thank you! I loved this discussion filled with great information! A particular concern of mine was handled beautifully when you said to beware of translations that are written by one individual as opposed to a committee of folks from a diverse background who can work with one another to come to conclusions. There's such danger in following one individual's expertise (or lack thereof) who takes it upon themself to write a translation or paraphrase that is not subjected to critical review. Sadly, those who choose to overlook the need for following careful translation techniques are those who have the most difficulty understanding why the version they choose to read could be so spiritually unhealthy. As always, great job handling this sensitive issue!!!

The Amplified Bible is in a category of its own. I would suggest that you read it with CAUTION. Here's why: the idea is that the translators make available the range of meanings of significant words so that each reader can see the possibilities make their own decision. In theory, this is cool. However, this can be problematic for a couple of reasons. (1) The meaning of the Bible is not whatever we want it to be. It's tethered to what the author intended. Not every reader is equipped to choose well. (2) Some readers might misunderstand the purpose and think that every meaning is true all at once. Languages don't really work like this. That is, the author intended a meaning for each word, which is constrained by the meaning of the sentence. For example, the word "trunk" can mean many different things -- back of a car, front of an elephant, storage chest, base of a tree -- but these meanings are not interchangeable. Except in cases of very clever wordplay, we should only expect to see ONE of these meanings in operation at a time. I hope this is helpful!

Just found your channel and am binge watching!! It’s absolutely wonderful and so informative - and mother/daughter duo so young and so accomplished. This is a huge blessing for me personally and a gift to all of us. I’m conflicted about the move away from masculine pronouns which often results in incorrect English as I was taught. Just checked this in the preface of my newly acquired NIV Thompson Chain Bible and see their explanation citing Mark 8:36…”What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” What are your thoughts on this please?

Can you cite an example where the language in the old testament changes over time in Old Testament?

Great question, Aaron! This isn't my area of expertise, but I can think of a couple of examples that involve metaphors. Earlier in the OT, the dominant metaphor for sin was carrying a burden ("bear sin" or "bear iniquity"). Over time, the word "bear" came to mean "forgive" because of how often it was associated with the bearing away of sin (think of the scapegoat in Leviticus 16). Also later in the OT, a new metaphor arose that thought of sin as a debt to be paid.

@Carmen Joy Imes Here is the news: Spain has joined the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and Canada this Thursday as one of the first countries in the world to regulate euthanasia. The Congress of Deputies, with 202 votes in favor, 141 against and two abstentions, approved the law promoted by the PSOE, which will enter into force within three months. To request it, the affected person must “suffer a serious and incurable disease or a serious, chronic and incapacitating condition” that causes “intolerable suffering”. Although it has been removed from the title of the law, the norm regulates both euthanasia itself - "direct administration of a substance to the patient by the competent healthcare professional" - and medically assisted suicide - "the prescription or supply to the patient by of the health professional of a substance, so that he can self-administer it, to cause his own death ”-. I only ask Yave to pay for all the injustices they are doing not only for euthanasia, but also for the criminal management of the pandemic. I ask God for justice nothing more and nothing less.
