Thank you so much for this video, Victoria! For me, the hardest part of ASL is quickly transferring my thoughts (which are always in English structure) to ASL structure. Prepositional phrases are also really tough. Anyway, THANK YOU SO, SO MUCH for this informative video!!

This is maybe the best explained videos on asl grammar rules that I have heard. The lady spoke loud enough to hear and she was very clear. Really I have heard it all before many times, but the presentation just seemed to be perfect and so easy to absorb. Excellent presentation

What confuses me is when you say something simple like “my name is ____” you would sign it word for word in English but with her “I was walking down the street” example you have to sign it differently. My question is how do you know when you have to sign it differently
@angierd17154 жыл бұрын
You can't "paint" my name is though :')
@nicolec80754 жыл бұрын
In English, sentence structure goes Subject, Object, Verb. In ASL, it's Time, Object, Subject, Verb. Her example about cookies was off so much that I'm comfortable calling her wrong. It should be "Cookies, I like." If she was saying she WAS walking down the street, she should first sign BEFORE or something to indicate past tense, then STREET, then I WALK. You would say "My name (then finger spell it). Or you would ask, "Your name what." Who, What, Why, How usually goes at the end of the sentence. There's a lot of conflicting and inaccurate info on KZbin regarding ASL and with the exception of certified interpreters or actual Deaf people, I would take all the videos of hearing people teaching ASL with a grain of salt.

@kelseyqueen20684 жыл бұрын
Carolina S no. You show if it was present or past tense
@toasty9734 жыл бұрын
what Kelsey said. There's a sign for 'past', which would mean 'used to be', and there's a sign for 'now', which would mean 'am' or 'currently'

Yeah what both of you said. Basically you would just do the sign for past or future before signing your sentence

So in ASL there aren’t conjunctions?
@sandrabailey87434 жыл бұрын
There are simple ones. Won't, don't, can't. I don't believe there is a sign for isn't. I could be wrong as I'm still learning ASL. Most of the time a conjunction sign is unnecessary. Your facial expressions and emphasis on conveying your response will be understood.
@JamaicanQueen533 жыл бұрын
Yes there are
@JamaicanQueen533 жыл бұрын
@@sandrabailey8743 won't, don't can't, isn't are contractions not conjunctions. There are signs for both conjunctions and contractions. It's rare they're used but sometimes it's needed in sentences. Most times body language and facial expressions conveys the sentence as you mentioned.

I loved most of the video although I wish there was a bit more grammatical explanation but, if your audience is beginners then it is fine. Where you lost me was at the very end when you said that ASL is a "simple language".... If ASL was such "simple language" we would not need teachers to teach it. You need to give yourself and more importantly, ASL much more credit! I tell my students that, "Anything you can say in your language , you can sign in ASL! It's just a different approach than English." Every language has their own rules and while it may look grammatically incorrect when we look at it through English or our native language, it is grammatically correct when given the perimeters of what makes a language a true language! p.s. My school district proudly represents 70 to 80 different languages!

I do not know ASL but, unlike other spoken languages I find it fascinating. I think it is extremely unfortunate that when closed captions etc. are provided for those of us who are foreign to the language that ASL is “translated” into English without an option for us to read the actual “words” used in the order that they are used.

Is the sing language universal or every country have their own way signing? Like for instance English and Spanish would be the same or different?

The same way spoken language is different in each country, sign language is different in each country too.

Hi! I understand the present grammar structure, but when using past or present verbs, my grammar gets all messed up. Could you help please?
@lizcreatesthings53424 жыл бұрын
Polarx Prism I thought asl had no past tense? So like when you say “I went to the beach” there’s no sign for “went” you just sign “go”
@sandrabailey87434 жыл бұрын
I'm studying too. It's my understanding that you would sign, "I beach go" Then make the sign for when you went. For example; You wouldn't sign "Yesterday, I went to the beach." You'd sign, "I beach go, yesterday" or "I go beach, week." Then make the sign for "in the past" Don't get discouraged. It's difficult to unlearn how we, as hearing people, put together sentences in order to sign ASL correctly. Keep trying. You'll get it.
@ebbyoma70084 жыл бұрын
Sandra Bailey someone here said ASL sentence structure is usually Time, Object, Subject, Verb. Do you think signing “Before/ in the past, beach I go.”
@shellyedmb1174 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding your question. But there is a sign for past tense (was, did, etc) and present tense (now, will do, etc).
Thanks for the video! Be careful with the English grammar, though! The screen that says "ASL has it's own syntax" should have read "ASL has its own syntax." Remember that it's is a contraction of it and is. You can't say "ASL has it is own syntax." The word you want-- its--is a possessive pronoun meaning "belonging to it."

@lilyraimey34994 жыл бұрын
She didn’t say there wasn’t a sign for “and”, she said the word for “and” “doesn’t really exist in ASL”, which is true. Some signs exist only for SEE (sign exact English), and aren’t used in ASL. They’re entirely separate things.
