One time, I was this mother trying to make ends meet alone and to provide for my child,I worked full time and had another self employed job ,My job was just two blocks away and my child’s school was a half block away, My son was only eight old,he came early from school and I wasn’t notified ,My son waited for me sitting at the stairs and some one reported me that my child was outside,The police came and I was over head worried, but they saw I just came out of work because I had my job badge and they told me not worry because the neighbor on the side and the one downstairs told them, they were watching my boy’ I was always grateful to those neighbors .😊

I grew up with the Latch Key era. My bf mom worked a real job and cleaned office buildings after work. Her mom would pin the house key to her under shirt. After school she would go home lock the door until her mom got home😢 when I grew up and became a mom I thought about my friends mom. She was an amazing HARD WORKER and BEAUTIFUL WOMAN. Damn the system makes it so hard for INNOCENT PEOPLE 😐

I feel that in my heart , because I know both my parents worked and I know I had to be dropped off at home and stay alone till they got off work . I was in my room with my huge dog. , or next door with the neighbor who loved me like her own till my siblings got out of school. They were older. But if someone asked I said moms in the shower and told me not to open the door for ypu because your creepy talk to my neighbor lol .

My children were taken from my husband and I over 30 years ago because of misunderstandings such as this. As a Christian, the first thing I did was contact my parents and my pastor and his wife. We prayed and interceded for the situation. The original judge on the case, who was sympathetic to children services, was called out to another case in the county. The replacement judge didn't like how children services worked against parents, and our children were home by the end of that day. They had been gone for one week. My parents helped us to retain our own attorney. I do believe that through prayer, The Lord intervened, and returned our children to us. The judge said that our children should never have been taken from us. God is my vindicator. Praise Him, for He is always there for you in ALL WAYS!

I don't leave my kids home alone until they are at least 13 years old at a minimum. If I have to leave my little kids home, they stay with my 18 and 17 year old daughters. Even still, someone called CPS on me alleging physical abuse because my 17 year old daughter had bruising on her shins from falling on the pavement outside and because she was walking alone. She is old enough and competent enough to drive a car. Therefore she is legally allowed to walk by herself. She had a mobile phone.

That story about your seventeen year old is crazy. I'm so sorry for you both. I grew up in Scotland in the seventies and eighties and walked to school on my own from age 5.aged about nine we got a dog and I took her for walks on my own before and after school, even in the dark. Now I hear parents saying their child can't leave the house alone until they are 16. It's sad and must be so frustrating for the kids.

This is why you do not leave kids alone. In Oregon we have a state law that children under 12 cannot be left alone at home. At least that was the law when I was 12. I am now 61 years old. There were 4 of us siblings. None of us were left alone at home until I was at least 15. My siblings hated it, but i was the oldest. I did not like it either being left with two very wild special children who were 13 years old, and then a younger sister about 5 years younger than myself. Those three got into so much mischief. I was the one who got physically punished for it too. I formed the opinion that a teenager should NOT baby sit fellow teenagers who have mental health issues, nor developmentally disabled or mentally challenged either. Which was my case. Children should not be responsible for another child who is strong willed. I think once an older siblbing reaches 19 that might be different. AS for me it was a set up for total disaster. My brothers are now in their late 50's the one who is mentally challenged finally understands the emotional damage we all suffered. He apologized for his part in what happened, his slightly older twin who has a slighly higher IQ seems to think the world owes him. He is very spoiled. AS for my younger sister, she is a real sweetheart, having patched up our relationship a long time ago. WE now live together and help each other, both us having disabling health conditions. WE realize if we ever had children, we would have done things differently, no latch key kids, for those who know what that is, as my own Dad was a latch key kid, he is 83 now. Now days, I think children under the age of 16 should not be left unsupervised due to drugs, and sex traffickers and such that is out there. Today, I would NOT allow my kids to walk to school by themselves, they could be abducted. NO thanks. But I remember being 6 years old and walking several blocks to school alone, getting beat up, and knocked around, and being told to have s "stiff upper lip" and stand up for myself. And I was a girl. Today, my Dad regrets his style of parenting and the damage it caused us. I stopped the movie to comment, as it is affecting my PTSD just at the point the mother finds her child now gone from the home. I do not know if I can watch this movie. The police already have a bad, mis-judged situation--and having gone through that mess as kid, when nothing was really wrong.. then having been messed with by a pedophile which was never caught who tried to murder me, taking me some 40 years of depression to get over--this movie might be too much for me. I do love Valerie Bertinelli, she is a great actress, and has aged wonderfully over the years. I will not spoil the movie. But man, parents do not leave your children under age alone. Things can happen, because they have free spirits, and do not plan to disobey you, just things happen because they are joyful, sweet children, fun loving, and cannot think about consequences of their actions. By the time I was 15, I knew what was a true emergency to call 911 and what would end up looking like child neglect from my parents, and over active siblings, and my inablility to control the situation. Never called 911 for anything. NOT unless there was fire, we never never had that, thank God.

We stayed at home since 11 yrs old. We walked several blocks to grade school. The real issue was my mom bringing a friend into our lives that started r4ping me at age 4 yrs old. I have ptsd for far different reasons than you. I survived my childhood. We all survive. I used to share gory details of my childhood but at some point you have to move on. I'm 50. I never required my loved ones to appollogize to me in order to be in my life. We were all just trying to get through the nightmare . Especially the disabled ones Jesus

@@aliciacarstensen7904 I never required anyone to apologize to me either. My Dad did it because he had an eipiphany from God. By the time he apologized I had already forgiven him decades earlier. I took many psychology classe in college, and minored in it. I also had two decades of personal counseling. I grew to understand the culture my parents were raised in, and it gave me compassion for them. I cried for them, realizing that both my parents, and their parents were also abuse victims. There is abuse to the point of murdering children going back 4 generations. It was hidden by family members. It only recently came out about 5 years ago! This can really warp a person, knowing that your siblings were murdered by abuse, then as the youngest, your parents moved to another state, having never been caught, to start over, making you the eldest sibling. This is what happened in my family. Then it carried to the next generation--thankfully no more murders, but physical and mental abuse to the extreme which lead to seriously broken relationships with aunts/uncles--my parents siblings. It has taken the love of Jesus Christ to heal us all. Finally with the nieces and nephews from all these families, it took our generation to stop the abuse. My siblings and I all wound up sterile and unable to have children. NONE of us married. My cousins married all have broken marriages. Finally they understand why! We had a very good family reunion, and all the dirt is buried and we just all hung out loving each other. The pedophile I ran into tortured me for hours sexually. ONce he knocked me unconscious, thought he had killed me. I was barely conscious, as he discussed with his wife about what to do with my body. I had also puked on myself. They called my parents breeders, and discussed all the others they had murdered and gotten away with. While they were not caught for what they did to me, eventually they were caught, and all died in prision. Yes, I had nightmarees for years about being buried alive as that was their plan. My history is too complicated to discuss here. But it left me with decades of PTSD on top of a very dysfunctional family with parents who themselves were severly physical abused. My mother started working on the farm at age 4. She was baling hay at age 7. could not lift the bales, but she wrapped wire. Her 6 year old brother drove the truck, with heavy wooden blocks tried to the gas pedals so he could reach them. From the road it looked as if the truck drove itself. They were beaten senseless if they did not complete their work. I am sure YOUR experience is vastly different from my family. My Dad was expected at age 7 to do his homework from school, then clean the house, and make dinner for everyone by the time his parents came home from work. If not done, his legs were beaten until he physically bled. He saw no problem beating his kds with a board. I was age 17 when he hit me so hard, bloodied my lip and sent me flying across the room. He was mad that I tried to commit suicide. Sent me to school in shock, no medical help. I od's on pills and was hallucinating. I have no memory of three weeks of my life. School freaked out--had no idea what to do. Yes, I am sure my life is very different from yours. I forgave my parents long, long time ago. But my Dad apologized because of his own conscious--after making things right with God--he felt the need to apologize. I accepted. WE know have the best relationship ever! I treasure each day I have with him, and I praise God for healing our family of all the pain and sorrow. There is life after sexual abuse, there is life after physical abuse. I am just sorry my mother died in 2018 and did not live long enough to forgive HER own brother for his abuse of her--and make things right with HER siblings. That is a sad thing. Michelle Reed

I agree that no child or teen should be required to babysit a sibling and that no child under 12 should be left alone for hours. But over 13 and over is old enough to stay home alone for a few hours. And with the "buddy system" or a group, kids over 7 should be able to walk a short distance to school. While it's good to keep our kids reasonably safe, we mustn't helicopter parent our kids. Any of the neighbors in that apartment building could have offered to watch Abby for a few hours per week.

Yet another movie with no ending! The people who write, produce, etc., these movies get paid MEGA bucks for what they do compared to other professions, and yet they are too lazy to write/produce an ending! And why is it that some single mothers can produce another baby every few months just to up their welfare benefits, while others are struggling along, raising their child(ren) the best way they can, “ineligible” for welfare benefits working one + jobs to support them, only to have CPS breathing down their necks, looking for any flimsy excuse they can to take the children away from them, and deem them an unfit parent, when they are most likely (generally speaking) the most loving and fit parents there are?
