This is, without a doubt, the most thorough and understandable presentation of addiction I have ever seen. The "matter of factness" and medically supported logic helps anyone who has ever dealth with or been associated with addiction to understand it. This should be a requirement in the education of every single healthcare professional. As a surgeon, I have spent 2.5 years attempting to fully understand the mechanisms involved with addiction that lead to actions that often are unexplainable and non-defensible. These actions are often incredibly uncharacteristic of the person we know and love. Highly advised to watch and send to anyone you know involved in medicine, at any level, as well as those who are stuggling with addiction personally or dealing with someone who is.

Kudos to this amazing person. Game changer for sure. I'm currently in residential treatment this is my third time watching this video and have showed countless others. I've sent it along to my family members in the hopes it gives us a catalyst to begin healing. I can truly appreciate how much work went into this presentation and the supporting research. What really pulls at my heart strings is the fact that after all the hard work Dr. Labor still takes a moment to reach out to the still sick and suffering and offer a message of hope.

Please also listen to doctors such as Dr Gabor Matè and Dr Peter Levine, who very logically explain why we have addictions (of all different kinds), and why addictions are logical comping mechanisms for dealing with stress and even small-t trauma! I know, because their work has saved me and helped me turn my life completely around. 😊

Dr. Labor - you're the real deal. Thank you for sharing this information but also thank you for dedicating your life to this profession! We need more of you. I run support groups for families of addicted loved ones. I share this video over and over again with them. The information you share here is what so many families need to understand so they can find hope but also find compassion and understanding for their loved ones without trying to fix their problems. Thank you!

Reply to someone below. Dr. Nicole Labor is spot on with everything she is saying. She is getting her information from peer reviewed journals and NIH. You can not fake or skew peer reviewed research. The American Scientist is a magazine. It is not a peer reviewed journal. The info in a magazine can not compare to the National Institute of Health peer reviewed research which is the Golden Standard of Research for doctors, researchers, scientists and lay people.

I'm in a Celebrate Recovery program. I've been practicing Al-Anon since the early 80's. I've learned to build boundaries that keep addicts out of my life. A friend sent this video to me. I got curious to learn if there's any new information. I listened to the whole thing. I believe diabetes is addiction. Shopping can be. My great-grandfather was a pharmacist addict who died from his addiction. Same with my dad and 3 husbands. She said nothing I've not already heard . I've done my share of living in the cold, and I've done more than my share of walking loved ones to their grave watching their bad choices. If I want to have a good life, it's up to me. I've watched too many die.

I was a heroin addict and quit using with methadone treatment and then a few years later started drinking but was able to quit on my own with no problem I can only assume that considering I had no issues quitting either one my Gene had not been activated. My question is when I was quitting heroin why did I go through so much withdrawal? Or do you go through withdrawal regardless if your Gene has been activated?

@@karinlarsen2608Then in the 1950s and 1960s where more than half of the population smoked and had the hardest time quitting, would mean that they all had the addicted gene activated. I’m not convinced with this theory. I truly believe that anyone, under the right circumstances, even without genetic predisposition can get addicted to an addictive substance. I’ve seen it many times in my personal life plus professional life.

God is real, and he is the key. Use the 12 steps. Starting with steps 1-3 are the crucial key to opening a door to a new world. At first, don't worry about who God is, but know he is there to help you.... if you admit step 1, you can begin a new life (or sometimes a life).

In other countries, these things stay taboo maybe because the availability of drugs is less than in the States and listening to these messages produces a lot of skepticism and a lot of people with chips on their shoulders react as..."Suck it up, why didn´t you just didn´t start using". But the problem is there, and I think it is not limited to hard drug users, addiction and compulsive behaviour is practically in every aspect of life. And I believe it crucial to get educated on how to cope with that. And I think that the first ones to promote this should be religions. What is the other alternative? throw everybody in jail while the problem still grows? I would love to get tested in order to know if my brain is prone to adiction. I think that is very important for future generations.

I really appreciate your lecture, but one question: "If you appreciate the cognitive bias and psychology of people, then why is your hair dyed and why aren't you wearing professional attire?" They aren't prerequisites, and you can fully do your own thing, but it limits the already-limited audience to hear an analytical mind breaking down the human experience, yet ignoring the subconscious red-flags when we want to perceive a professional.

So you want to ban a stubstance that saves lives? Why? Because they are addicts? What about police officers who are accidentally exposed and OD? What about the patient who is on pain meds after surgery and accidentally ODs? If you believe it should be banned due to addicts choosing to use so it’s just “Darwinism”’would you say the same thing for airbags? Seatbelts? Life saving surgery after a car accident? When people make mistakes like driving too fast on a rainy day and get into an accident, we don’t say, you shouldn’t have been saved by your airbags because you were dumb for driving too fast it’s just Darwinism. What about the person who smokes and gets cancer? Do they not deserve chemo treatment because they knew the risk of smoking? Narcan saves more lives than just “addicts” and even if it only saved addicts it is still worth it. People’s lives have value and they are worth trying to save. Just because you are sick with a disease doesn’t mean you don’t deserve treatment or compassion. You don’t walk up to someone who’s obese but is still eating unhealthy and tell them their kids are better off if they just died. Or you hope they die because they choose to keep eating unhealthy food. What about people who have had surgery or had a horrible injury and became addicted to lain killers? Is it their fault they became addicted even though they had to use the medication to function while they were healing? If you don’t know you are allergic to shellfish and you eat a shrimp we don’t tell people, well you choose to eat the shrimp now suffer the consequences. Even though they had no idea they had the gene that made them allergic to shrimp. People don’t know they are born with the addiction gene until after they have become addicted. I’m sorry you don’t understand that. I hope you never experience the pain and heartache substance abuse disorder inflicts on its victims.

@@KatlynJShute how about when little kids and adults die from bee stings? Are epi pens free?? Nope they sure as hell are not. I can see once or twice saving them because some people are curious and wanna try something but when you see a person has been given narcan a dozen times that person's an idiot and doesn't want to live anymore.
@KatlynJShute
@KatlynJShute 3 жыл бұрын
@@jamesmatheny6419 I would agree they should be free but I don’t think it means we should ban narcan. Instead of everyone suffering due to their life medication being too expensive why don’t fight to make all life saving medication free. Epi pens, insulin, cancer medication, mental health medications should all be available to people despite the ability to pay. We are all on the same side, life saving medication should not be hidden behind a pay wall. Don’t take away the free life saving medication from one classification of people (addicts/those who OD) just because another classification of people (diabetics/those with allergies) doesn’t have access to their life saving medication for free. We should demand more from our leaders and those who force patients to choose between having an EPI pen that is not expired or bad and paying the light bill. Or having their insulin and putting food on the table. We are pointing the blame and directing the blame at the wrong people. Addicts do want to live, Saying an addict doesn’t want to live because they keep using drugs is like saying a diabetic doesn’t want to live because they still don’t manage their diet like they should. They understand they shouldn’t eat that food but there is an underlying issue that causes them to continue to eat the foods that could make their health worse. We don’t tell smokers who develop lung cancer that they don’t deserve help for their cancer because they knew what smoking would do to them. Narcan isn’t about saving an addicts life so they can go and get high again it’s about saving their life long enough to hopefully get them to treatment. Accidental ODs happen especially with the introduction of Fentynl into the drugs which is 100X stronger than morphine. I understand the anger and frustration of seeing someone dig themselves deeper and deeper into addiction knowing they are doing so. In fact, in my opinion family and friends of addicts have it harder than the actual addict because the addicts gets to escape their pain by using while the family and friends have to deal with the broken pieces. Not saying the addict isn’t also suffering they are. As an addict in recovery With almost 8 years of sobriety under my belt I will tell you the worst things ever said to me about my addiction and what I put my family through came out of my own brain. I called myself the nastiest names snd I felt disgusting every time I did something they hurt my family. However, my brain had actually been physically altered causing my brain to be completely different then the way I used to think and feel. I had a very bad knee injury that required surgery which was very painful. I was on 14 but with that one surgery my brain began to change and I eventually was addicted when I never even chose to try to get high just to see what it was like. My mom was a firefighter paramedic and knew the risk factors of becoming addicted but I couldn’t function or heal without having some sort of pain management. I wish addiction was black and white and easy to understand but just like any other disease that affects any part of the human body, it’s incredibly multi layered end complex and no two people are alike. Addiction literally causes brain damage. We don’t fault people with brain damage who suffer with memory loss or loss of motor function we understand they have a damaged organ that needs help to be repaired. It’s the same with addiction. We don’t fault someone who has a peanut allergy for being allergic. It’s not their fault their brain/body attacks itself when exposed to peanuts. They have no control over it. I’m not trying to argue or fight with you. I’m really hoping that you can see we are all on the same side and I think the blame about drug price’s is being out on the wrong people. Addicts are not the ones who have made the pricing for diabetes meds or Epi pens. It’s not their fault that drug companies are greedy and are willing to put profits above peoples lives.
