Mark Beaumont has made cycling, running or whatever your chosen discipline is accessible to everyone, no matter who you are. To win the TDF or to become a professional cyclist, you need the genetic make up of a top athlete, and then comes the dedication, the work, the nutrition etc ...simple. But to say ride 24 hours ....well with a reasonable amount of fitness we can all do that, we all can .....some will ride 300 miles, some 200 mile, some 160 mile ...but we can all set ourselves these challenges. Endurance is becoming pretty popular now because of people like this ...it's great.

It could be true, but I can't see the reason why to compare winning the TDF to simply riding 24 hours, especially in cases when someone "only" rides 160-200 miles as you mentioned. Winning the TDF is a whole different league in really every possible sense, not very long ago the longest stages used to be longer than 160 miles. Riding 400-500 miles or even more in under 24 hours... Well, that would surely be a fair comparison. But winning the TDF and cycling just whatever miles in under 24 hours? No thanks, I don't like this comparison at all.

I think the reason why endurance and ultra endurance is becoming so popular is that it's great for self exploration. More and more people asking themselves who they are. My opinion is: Ride for 20 / 24 hours or more, then you'll know who you are.

This is a woefully underrated human achievement.

An amazing man. I read his book "The Man Who Cycled The World" some years ago and it was right up there with the very best adventure/travel books I've ever read. Wonderful stories and impossible to put down once you've started. Having now cycled the world twice and attempted to row across the Atlantic as well, I guess the only thing left for him to do now is an unbroken circumnavigation including crossing the oceans by pedalo!

Brilliant 👏👏 At the start of the first UK lockdown in March 2020 I wanted to read something that was the polar opposite of being stuck at home : "The man who cycled the world" was the perfect choice.

I am reading the book at the moment.. This is truly epic stuff, beyond what 99.9% of humans could even dream of. It makes the tour de france look like a Sunday morning spin with your mates!!

Great Speech, Mark I've got a question for you...What round the world trip was your best. Round in 80 days with a full support team or Round in 195 days on your own for the first time??

In the GCN interview he answered this question. The 1st one is more precious to him.

@@pocznjm I guess it is because of his enjoyment of feeling the connection with/being supported by the team and not because he did it faster.

He's part of the 0.1% of humans on the planet that are capable of superhuman feats of endurance and should be mentioned in the same breath as wiggins and froome
