I was at Game 3 of the ‘15 NLDS at Citi Field. It was one of the best nights of my life. The boos for Utley were thunderous, and the cheers for Tejada were just as loud. Combine that with the Mets putting up 13 runs, and you’ve got a hell of an experience. I’ll never forget it. Let’s go Mets!

I'm glad the league is cracking down on takeout slides. I know some purists want to see this type of stuff, but I want to see the players play. Having a player potentially get injured and miss a bunch of games over a single out in one game of a 162 game season is not good for the game in my opinion.
@ilyabryzness49948 жыл бұрын
+Il Exile lI so not breaking up a double play, isn't worth it because it only effects one play, and someone might get hurt? well that first part is pretty dumb. if you aren't trying your hardest on every play, you don't win games, and you won't make the playoffs. and you're concerned about people getting hurt? well boo-hoo. people get hurt in sports. real shocker, right? this comment really makes it sound like you've never played a sport in your life.

Really? Neither the one by, or on, Kang? :p Here's my take on the new rules applied to those slides: Utley on Tejada - Completely illegal, it's part of the reason we HAVE a new rule (which is essentially just the old rule, but they've remembered it exists). Holliday on Scutero - Completely illegal also. It was basically a body block, the fact Holliday touched the bag at all was mostly a coincidence. Beltre on Kendrick - Totally legal. McRae on Randolph - AHAHAHAHAHAH. So illegal it's not even funny. Lawrie on Escobar - Not as bad as some of the others, but illegal. He made no attempt to slide into second, 100% intended to slide into Escobar. The fact that the two were briefly in the same place was a happy coincidence for Lawrie. No intent to hurt the guy on the base, obviously, but no intent to reach second base either. This is exactly the kind of slide I hate. If you hit someone WHILE getting to the base, that's fine. But taking someone out INSTEAD of getting to the base is not ok. McRae (again) on Green - Almost as laughable as the first one. Definitely not legal in any way. It wasn't called the McRae rule for nothing (although it might as well have been for nothing as it was never enforced). Castillo on Valdespin - Nothing wrong with that. Pretty shoddy defensive work by Valdespin more than anything. That is, indeed, how you break up a DP. Clarke on Oquendo - Illegal, not even thinking about getting to the base, he was half way to center field. But there was no need for the handbags afterwards, it wasn't particularly dangerous. Hal McCrae though, man... I forgot what an asshole he was on the basepaths. :p
@littlemas28 жыл бұрын
+GwresYnKernow Great analysis. On a lot of these the intent is obvious, and that is the key. If you are going hard into second that is fine, but many of these it is obvious they are going hard into the defensive player. You have a right to the base path and if the defense player is standing there, they might get hit. If on the other hand the defensive player is behind the bag and moving away or 3 feet outside the path and you still hit them then you are taking way more than the game should allow.
@CybeastID8 жыл бұрын
+GwresYnKernow And as I pointed out, there was ALREADY A RULE against it. 7.08(b) and 7.09(e) are rules that those slides are a violation of, and had they been applied correctly long ago, this might have been avoided. I've posted the full text of both rules before, but if you don't want to go looking for one of those comments, feel free to read them here: mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/official_rules/runner_7.jsp
