20 min Japanese interview with Master (Sensei I should say !) "Beat" Takeshi Kitano about his beautiful third feature, A Scene at the Sea, 1991(with the beautiful score of Joe Hisaishi), but also about his vision of filmmaking and art. Very interesting especially if you've watch his later films too, especially Achilles and the Tortoise.
Again, the black frames are to avoid the youtube copyright strike...

Seriously, I want to ask quetions to a simple person, I am a powerful philosopher, I am an unlimited producer of arts, unlimited vision to compose and do, I can work in any imaginable area in this life, I have the body and the face, I have the right voice to any speech, I have all the light given from the skies, but I do not have the same health that I had when I was younger because of the human justice, what to do if the eyes can see, the spirit can feel but yor body is not the same, it can not perform anymore in plenitude the gifts that God has given, what to do if I was born to be in fully in many ways? I still can fully imagine but without health I CAN NOT DO COMPLETLY, and without money what a real artist should do in this short life.? I DO NOT KNOW YOU SIR but you could take my history to some good writer, an unbeliavable REAL history about true unbeliavable events of some real unbeliaveble ARTISTIC human life.

I remember interviews used to be like this. You see and hear only the person of interest. Now u not only see the journalist's acting like they're best pals with the celebrity but u hear their ego talk about their own opinion and life experience that nobody gives a fuck about.

'A film has 24 images per second but you have to add dialogue, because those are not enough the idea would be film was like a photo. Express itself only through words to move the audience. That would be perfect." -Takeshi Kitano
@Nezuji
@Nezuji 2 жыл бұрын
I feel like this translation in the subtitles mangles what he actually said a little bit, so I've tried to give it another go despite my limited Japanese and Mr. Kitano's famously mumbled speech: "I saw a Pulitzer Prize-winning photo, a great photo. In one image, it says everything about the Vietnam War. There's no need for words. But using the same (photos), even though film shows us 24 photos per second, because it's probably not enough, we have to add words. And we add foley, and music, and so on. But similarly the ideal is, like taking a single photograph, if we can just let the film play out (over time), and move the audience with only that... that's best, I think."

@tubeyou1000 10 ай бұрын
The entire series of English subtitles starting with "but you have to add dialogue" is a mistranslation. Here's what Takeshi wants to convey: "In movies, 24 pictures are shown per second. Just like a Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph can tell the whole story of the Vietnam War without words, sometimes. Words aren't even necessary. Similarly, even though movies show 24 pictures per second, many films often resort to using words to complement them, as if it's not enough. However, words and music are merely supplementary. What's most important, in my opinion, is that, just like a single photograph can tell a story, in film, everyone is moved best when it simply flows with time, without the need for anything else." “but you have to add dialogue” のからの一連の英語字幕は全て誤訳となっている。

One of all time favourite films for me, watched it 20 years ago, still sometimes go back to it. It's outstanding. That's what makes Takeshi Kitano one of my favourites, close to legends and titans like Akira Kurosawa and Andrey Tarkovskiy. He understands the depth and the ambivalence of beauty and death.
