If a rear subframe can found at a reasonable price it would be worth fixing. Had one as a company car many years ago and it was very reliable and comfortable.

I have a rear subframe available if required. I'm currently refurbing my st tdci Estate. Had it 10 years/100k I've done in it. There are more about that may be better condition, but, they may have other problems engine wise for example. Does seem this has been neglected tho, so worth a look at parts and another car to weigh up costs ect.

Rotton rear sub frames common finding one in good condition might take a while

Those rear crossmembers are made of unobtainium and are NOT the same as subframes on saloon and h/back models. The rear crossmember usually rots on the tops of the spring mounts. Anyone with an estate I'd recommend get some engine oil brushed on the underside before it's too late. They ARE self levelling rear shocks you can tell by the gaitors on them, and very expensive!
