As I'm listening to 6:40, I realize how important the "do just one thing" technique has been in my painting. I remember not having the motivation to start painting my Kill Team but after doing "just one" operative, I thought, "Huh, I'm already here, might as well keep going," and I finished the whole team in one sitting. Best paint night of my life, and I actually really enjoyed it.

My approach to getting back to painting when I’m low on motivation is the “just one more blob” approach. I put a single blob of paint on my palette and just slap that down on models until it runs out. And usually when it runs out, I’m halfway through coating a detail… so then I add another blob, and just see where it takes me. And suddenly I have a whole painted squad.

I regularly pause from the hobby in the summer to get house projects in order and for outdoor activities - MTB, hike, kayak. I adopted a rescue dog last year. We go on three walks daily for 30+ minutes each, plus long hikes on the weekend. He loves it and it's more healthy for me. The bonus, I have a "co-worker" while working from home and a biological security system for the house. I spend a lot of time thinking about what I'm going to paint next during our walks.

Always a great reminder that this is a hobby, not our lives. My breaks come and go, I can get a solid 5/6 sessions over a two week span, and then nothing for a month. What we need to be reminded of is to not let that frustration of not getting time to hobby bubble over.

My breaks are mainly caused by the plethora of other interests I have. On a multiple month hiatus currently due to the release of Diablo 4, followed by a little gem called Mechabellum, followed by BG3 (ongoing). It's not that I don't have fun anymore but as you said, adult life eats a lot of my spare time. I just need to focus on one between house, work and family. The real challenge is to juggling all my interests. It's supposed to be fun, not become an additional stress factor...

One other problem you didn't mention - too many hobbies! Within reason it is helpful to have more than one hobby so that if you start getting burnout on one you can take a break doing another. The problem comes when you have too many hobbies for the time available 🤔

One problem i have with 'The Hobby' is that although it is addictive and fun it is often as physically/mentally draining as work, when other pastimes like Videogames are pure relaxation (though they don't match that hobby high ofc). I was getting depressed playing computer games so have cut down hard replacing it with the hobby i'd been neglecting but on the flipside my level of physical fitness was great. Some of my recent hobby shifts on days off have left me so drained i've had to really force myself to go for a run or work out, when before vegging out playing games it was easy. So i think it is particularly easy to burn out with The Hobby and a break can be great edit: but always be mindful of that sense of fulfilment it brings and how without it you might end up more unhappy overall.

6:00 I agree with this sentiment. I have 2 foldable desks next to each other for this purpose. One for my painting, and the other for assembly/sometimes mini casualties if I'm playing a game. I got into mini painting after watercolour painting. I tend to go back and forth, one watercolour piece, then building and painting a mini squad/HQ/vehicle. I almost always have a few ideas of what I want to paint next either format so am usually motivated to finish a project and move on, but I don't rush. A project is done when it feels done. I will rarely have 2 projects on the go at once. Occasional exceptions when I'm super excited about something. Watercolour painting is a good contrast to mini painting. You kind of need to give up some control with the medium, after tiny details, mini eyeballs and edge highlights, it feels good. It is also a really cheap hobby in comparison. The 'pile of shame' is simply a paper pad 😂, and you can paint for years with a minimal investment in a few top quality pigments (Daniel Smith Split Primaries palette + Payne's grey, burnt umber, ochre and Sienna is all you really need), good paper (Arches), and brushes (similar brands to mini painting). $100-200 for years of hobby painting. Long way of my saying I totally agree that for me too, breaks anf variety are good.

I would say so - I remember I took a month off as I was feeling up to it while dealing with an unexpected health issue. What I found that worked for me was a bit of internal strong arming with some organization. Setting up your paints and tools is a good way to begin to want to use them which equates to wanting to work on projects. Shaking up the bottles and freshening the brushes etc - with a survey of new miniature sculpts coming out or what the influencers are doing.

It'll be great to see you in your original space again. I liked the studio show but it always seemed a little too prepared, if that can be a thing? My job is pretty much my hobby and I know that can be a huge friction point for many. But for me it's getting more time to take on more projects. So I've set aside the video gaming and told my groups that I'll be taking an extended break. There will be an occasional log on for special events but there wont be the hours long grind or binge playing like before. I really want to commit my time to learning new games, playing more and crafting more. I guess it's really a craving for something truly personal where I have full agency to set my own aesthetic and also not have to cope with video game culture's constant ego agenda.

I recently took a long break for over 18 months because I found I was just burned out of 40K... Then I discovered smaller scale skirmish games and re entered Battletech... and my hobby has been reignited. I still have all of the Space Marines, Tyranids etc. But I am finding uses for them in other games and in other projects. Like building a small Space Marine crew for Space Station Zero. It makes sense. It lets me still use some of my ancient 2nd Edition Space Marines but it also doesn't force me to let go of all the time I loved the game or the hobby. Like building a Retro 90s Eldar Kill Team. Which i did over the uears prior to my break. Or more recently buying up older 80s and 90s Chaos Warriors to build a Warcry Warband. Im finding the smaller project's are things I am loving. So I cant recommend it enough. Doing up some small Teams of troopers for Majestic 13 or painting up some Demons for Reign in Hell... its a great time to be in the Hobby. A few years back there was a White Dwarf mini game called Duels in the Crystal Labrinth. Its been an inspirational project for awhile. I want to do up some Pink, Blue and Brimstone horrors if only so I can play that game but i havent yet had the spare money to buy them. (Im finishing up my Battletech project first.) But it is on my to do list in time. Another project is to pick up some NBC equipped russians to do up for Zona Alfa.

Have to say that war'painting hobby was not fulfilling as it was, and I was filling kinda burned out, as you might guess due to commissions. Enters a full home renovation started last May that included a brand new dedicated hobby space for which I was hyped AF, long story short and reasons galore, the renovation is still half'ish done and only this week did the hobby space saw some work done. While I'm still not seeing myself painting anytime soon as the hobby space will take some more time to be properly ready, I've to say that I never felt so motivated to start painting again since I started in the hobby. Even boxing the "pile of shame" for the move gave me more ideas on what to do with it, dismantling the paint desk gave me more ideas on how I want to reorganize my future space, etc. TLDR: A frustrating longer than expected pause in the hobby can still hype us to return.

If you haven’t painted in five years, then maybe it’s not really your hobby, and that’s okay. Maybe it’s time to start trying to reduce your pile of models on eBay or some other solution. The other option is to try and set a goal (like “I want to paint five models before the end of 2023”) and then try to do it. If it doesn’t happen, then you’ll know that maybe painting and building isn’t for you. Good luck, and thanks for watching!

@Tabletopminions I know you don't know me from ... adam (wow cant believe I typed that) but I feel like we know each other from our chats on your streams. I feel I may be taking a long break I may never come back from. My wife passed away Saturday from gall bladder cancer and to be honest, it feels like the wind has just been taken out of me.

Condolences - when loosing someone close and intimate as that, I’m sure anyone in such a position would stop all activities to morn and reflect. Hopefully you will take council with friends and family as you work through your grief and when you are ready, find the things you liked to do and slowly get back on the horse. In the mean time - take your time - and deal with your loss as you see fit.

I’m very sorry for your loss. In times like these, if a hobby helps - then you should definitely do as much of it as you want. However, in many situations, your mind will be on many other things and that will be okay. If you do come back to the hobby eventually, it’ll be here waiting for you. Please take time to heal. Thanks for watching.

I struggle with wanting to quit the hobby entirely. Sell ALL my models and never think about it again. I don't think I can, given how I was tye one who got everyone around me into the hobby as well. I don't want to build or paint anymore and playing the game is not fun anymore. I don't know what to do.
