The Xecuter 3, later succeeded by the Xecuter 3 CE, is one of the final modchips released by Team-Xecuter for the original Xbox. It has been hailed by many as the best modification on the console due to the well documented installation, the BIOS, and of course the plethora of X3 compatible peripherals released for it. After many people asking me to take a look at this chip, I ended up finding one and wanted to take a retrospective look at it by exploring the history of the chip, the installation, stepping through the features, and seeing if this is worth seeking out so many years later.

I just picked up an og Xbox running rox my Xbox, it shows a small tag on the system with the logo and it's details are lan and HD with small lights alongside bank select 1 2 3 4 and an on switch it labels (bank select 1 2 3 4) and (flash protect) at the bottom when I run it it shows evolution x and it's running unknown bios with evolution x V+3935 no clue what it is as I just wanted to resell it as the console was only $20 with everything but the box and plastics what would you suggest doing? It has 46 games on it and that's all I know about it as of now. Is it legal to sell it I just wanted to make a few bucks but now I'm lost

I can email photos of the system if needed I tried running it old fashion way with the original bios and it either red rings or says this console needs customer support but if I boot it with a game disk in it will play as normal skipping the menu screens and if I boot it stand alone it will boot to the mod chip menu, the mod menu shows start here reboot power off and skins

What's it's value as it stands? It's just the console with original hookups and an original controller nothing else, it has been opened up of course but I will not fiddle around with it as its unknown to me I assume it's packing a stock hard drive or an aftermarket one but I'm not sure and the seller said nish about it as when asked he said no clue about anything so must have been his sons or friends assembly

I modded my xbox with a cheapo clone chip back when XBMP came out and my Xbox has been in constant use since 2001. It's probably the most solid hardware + software Microsoft has ever produced, an absolute work horse, and it's a bit puzzling how shitty 360 was in comparisons, it's almost like they fired all the staff that created the original Xbox.

Great video man. The original Xbox was my first console mod. I was surprised not to see the software side of things. My biggest memories were the hassle in getting software and emulators from Xbins. Requesting access via an IRC bot and then FTPing all your goodies. It was due to the software being protected by XDA I believe. Side note, having the front panel made an easy install even easier. FYI.

That was my was my first contact with the console, and I loved it. Some years later I just did some minor mods to the console, like adding usb ports not just in the console, but on a joystick too, changing it's 8gb hdd for a bigger one and not much more. I'm still rocking my old xecuter 2.3B Lite+ with the stupid pogo pins. After 16 years of fixing it constantly, I think today I finally got it right as I took out the extra pin for the D0 that wasn't needed on my revision. If it fails again I'm going to either do a pin install or just wire it direct. I'm an old school xbox modder, I was there in these days of 2004. My console was never online, I didn't care about that, I just wanted all the extra features like emulators and installing my games on my larger drive. The xbox was basically the raspberry pi before the raspberry pi. It's one of the greatest consoles of all time for these exploits.

Lilly Dog - T2Steve here Moderator at OGXbox webpage along with facebook page Former/final Moderator at xboxscene nice video, although I disagree that the X3 is not rare. I'd imagine their print run was somewhere in the 10-20k range in total. Lots of them have sadly ended up in landfills. The xBlast modded Aladdin chips do NOT support external LCD, and I wish that the LCD had made it into this video as that is a solid 40% of the reason why people bought these chips in the first place. Same with the full size faceplate that had the LCD imbedded along with the additional USB ports. The original xBlast chip does support LCD however, and has broader support for 3rd party LCD screens than the X3. also the xBlast OS has some newer/better features that the x3 chip doesnt include. Two of the features in the OS that were put in based on my feedback were the attempts to unlock a locked hard drive by using master passwords that are known - mostly xboxscene and teamassembly, along with the feature to attempt a repair on a failed flashed TSOP. It also includes the option (and I don't remember if I suggested it or not) to verify that additional RAM banks pass a ram test - which is handy if you are expanding the RAM. most of the features that the X3 includes are sadly no longer relevant. the final X2.5035 bios which can be used on large enough non x3 chips and TSOPs, along with the iND bios both support almost entirely the same features. altered boots, changed flubber, no video, ignoring the errors etc are all within their editable text file. While it isn't as convenient as the X3, they are present and honestly once you find something that you like, you'll never go into it again. as a final not Mr Mario, I suspect that your hard drive does support locking. it's probably X3 that is failing on it. you should give it a try in unleash or Evox and see if you have success, although honestly I dont know why anyone would want to lock their drives anymore on a hard mod
@MrMario2011
@MrMario2011 5 жыл бұрын
Good to meet you, Steve! I swear I read the Aladdin XBlast chips support LCD, although it could very well be what you have stated. Those extra features sound amazing, I didn't know! That's impressive. I can verify unfortunately that this hard drive does not lock. I have a few of them and have used a plethora of tools at my disposal, they won't lock no matter what! Even if you find the model on the hard drive compatibility page, one person has claimed they locked it and many people are absolutely stumped at how they did.

I still have my X3 CE modded 1.6. I remember the X3 took an eternity to arrive after I ordered it but it was so worth the wait. I had no soldering skill so my dad did all the soldering, and was terrified he was going to kill my Xbox and disappoint me but the install went perfectly. The original DVD drive is dead but the 200GB hard drive and all the games I installed still work perfectly. I also used it as a portable media center, just FTP video files over and take it wherever you want to watch. Also used it to emulate older systems like NES, SNES, N64, many Gameboy generations, and even PS1. I remember playing Super Mario RPG and Mario 64 and having a much more enjoyable experience thanks to the Xbox's much better controller. And it was the best DVD player I've ever used, XBMC would try to find the beginning of the actual movie and start there immediately and if it couldn't you could just chapter skip through all the normally unskippable crap, damn that was a nice feature.

I have a couple of spares that I think I'm going to mod when the chips come in, thanks to your tutorials. :) Happy belated birthday to Lilly. :) I think it'd be great if you made more of these type videos... Even though I was old and crusty during the XBox/PS2 era, I still didn't know much about the modding scene. (My original XBox, that has a bad DVD drive now, never went on XBox Live because I lived in nowheresville at the time and didn't have decent internet.) heh. Great video, sir. :)

I tend to mainly be a softmodder for various game systems, but after I learned from your video that the clock capacitors leaked I decided to take my Xbox apart and clean that up and remove it. While I was in there I also decided to redo the thermal paste on the system, that brought it down about 10 degrees! Which was pretty nice. Also, Lilly Dog ;)

I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I have a pretty decent amount of experience with modchips and BIOSes and all that, and I was wholly entertained the entire time. It was well edited, well narrated, well shot. No complaints here. My opinion on the X3- It's a 100% great modchip that has 150% hype. It's polished, reliable, and one of the most feature-rich modchips out there... but what makes one modchip better than another is very hard for most modders to distinguish or find value in. X3 has a reputation of being the best, but the next step down is also extremely close. Back when I started modding Xboxes (2008-ish), I did TSOP flashes exclusively. The point of a modchip is to load a custom BIOS, and that's what TSOP flashing accomplishes. I didn't own an Xbox with a modchip for years. That's because pretty everything I wanted to do I could accomplish with TSOP flashing. You just don't get the ability to switch between BIOSes or do some other more fancy things. I didn't really care though. So to me, modchips (including the X3) wasn't that big of a deal. The Live Config app is very cool and handy for key uses, but is a feature that appeals more to power users. For most people, after you set it all up, you'll won't really see that screen too often. X3 and the Live Config app is a luxury and what it accomplishes can often be done through other means (that might just have a different / more complicated process). I personally tend to use iND-BIOS when possible over Xecuter BIOSes. Anyways, anyone reading this in 2020 and beyond should strongly consider getting an OpenXenium modchip. They're very similar to the X3 and have a lot of the same features, except there's people still producing them so they're available for pretty cheap (about $20 right now). I have a couple of them and use them in my main Xbox + a 1 or two others. I recently started experimenting with LCD screens and LED boards (controlled by the modchip) too, which the OpenXenium supports, just like the old X3. Great video! Keep up the good work. See you on Reddit and elsewhere.

Hey, your video is still being watched. LillyDog! Thanks for your video! It triggered my memory and I remember that I had to push and hold the white button on boot to get into the X3 Config Live! (X3 Config Live was disabled on boot) I do have an Xecuter X3 in my first XBOX, still going strong. I actually had to rescue it from a leaking capacitor the other day. I remember the "solderless" adapters when they were being sold. They just were not solid enough for me. I do wish I could have gotten a front panel, or at least the button bar that attached below the power button but ah well. I still got that switch panel that let's everyone know "Hey, I'm here" After having the X3 and having TSOP flashed a few XBOXes since, yeah, it's not worth getting and it probably wasn't that worth it back then. Now, softmodding and TSOP flashing is so much easier and when all is said and done and you are in a custom dashboard and playing games off the hard drive, you'd never know that you have a modchip, TSOP flashed or softmodded XBOX. TSOP flashing back then either was not known or quite risky (I can't remember, it was 16 years ago.) Modchips were the way to go. I went with the X3 because it was the coolest (YEA MARKETING!) but I was mostly interested in the ease of setting up the hard drive. You could do it all right there in the BIOS! Setup a new drive, lock the new drive, unlock the old, FTP files to it, no AID or HeXEn needed. There really wasn't anything like AID or HeXEn back then, you did everything by hand. (I could go all "You kids got it easy. Back in my day...uphill both ways!") Using FTP feature of the X3, I backed up the drive contents of the original drive, and would use that to put back to a new upgraded drive. Then you manually transferred your desired dashboards and apps. I'm setting up a 2TB TSOP flashed XBOX now. I will be putting a 2TB drive in the X3 box soon. It will probably be much easier with the X3. TIP for all! The controller ports are all just USB ports with an extra yellow wire. I spliced into ports 3 and 4 using a USB rear bracket and now I can plug USB devices like mice and keyboard in the back right above the AV plug. If you can't find an XBOX port to USB adapter and don't want to cut up a controller cable, find a USB ext cable, and splice it to port 4. You can then plug a flash drive in to it to transfer the game saves needed to hack the box.

I have modded systems since I bought my first PsOne back in 2003, more because of necessity. I'm Brazilian. Only around the PS3 era we got kind of accessible original games around the country. Before that, a single game could cost around a minimum wage, and that would have a pretty big effect on a family budget. We only have any gamers here because of piracy. There is even a few documentaries about Brazilian piracy, although I think they're all in portuguese. Anyways, I'm diving more into consoles other than ps2s just now, and I found this video pretty interesting, as I enjoyed all the other original xbox videos you made so far. I'd like to see something about the Thunder Pro II Gold actually. Heard about that chip A LOT around here about 2010/2011. They were pretty popular with the ps2 sellers, had a bunch of said features like running things from usb, but I never had the chance to test it. Congratulations to Lilly Dog! Keep up the good work, your channel is one of the few I actually comment to, and that's because of the good content.

100% agree I almost feel if your wanting to get into xbox modding I would personally start with the Aladdin mod chip 😀. But this is the best system to start on. The community on it is amazing and more mods are coming out still [there actually are already done ones but coming to the public] such at the 1.4ghz cpu upgrade which I would not recommend attempting unless you have the equipment. That specific mod has been designed and is being beta tested but is not in full release do to cost of the pcb adapter. Altho the creator is trying to get funds to release the first batch.

6th gen? Sweet! What a coincidence! I have been working all day with the Wii SDK (and Gamecube SDK as well) to try to create official .rvm and .gcm images and am pleased to report that it was successful! This means that I can now take ANY dev NR or RVT disc and dump it to raw files, then take those files and recreate either a Gamecube .gcm image (different format than the homebrew .gcm format which is just renamed .iso) or a Wii .rvm image and burn it back to disc with the official Nintendo Writer program and the NR/RVT official multi-burner I have. These discs will then play in the NR reader or RVT-R reader just like the original disc did. Yes, this can be used to duplicate beta discs, but I was more after proof of concept as documentation on this is very scarce. Super stoked right now! ...and on top of that we get a MrMario2011 vid to enjoy! What an amazing day!

@@MrMario2011 I have documented it the best I can and taken a couple screen shots of the terminal commands. You need an official Nintendo burner to use with the official Writer program and also a Windows XP computer to run it all on. I am pretty happy that I finally got it all to work. Just burned an NR disc from an official .gcm image I created myself! The process is rather simple provided you have a dump of a dev signed game. Take the files, generate a .dlf disc layout file, then from that you can generate a .rvm or .gcm image based on what system it is for. There are a couple more steps but that is the basic process. Gamecube .gcm images take a little longer to make as you have to manually edit a template file, while the Wii .rvm image process for creating all files needed is done with terminal commands to the SDK software. It is super nice that the SDK and writer program/hardware will create images/discs for both Gamecube and Wii all in the same software package.

It didn't last too long after blinding clicking buttons in a menu that was in French for some reason. I ended up wiping the disk, or possibly deleted a necessary file. It was only good for playing discs, until the clock needed resetting, at which point it was basically dead to at-least-7-year-old me. I take back what I said earlier: The Xecuter 3 is worth it if you sell moddified XBOXes or like to test customizing BIOSes because the pepto-bismol chewable looking evox logo just doesn't turn me on. Plus, it works great for Sharp chips or 1.6 XBOXes. (I took your idea and I was going to TSOP flash my X3 XBOX but it does have a Sharp chip and it is a hassle and my attempts failed. It is kinda cool to boot into the original XBOX logo) The X3 XBOX was my 'main' but I decided to use my Halo BOX, TSOP it and put a 2TB drive in it. I thought using the orange LED and an orange XBOX logo looked good (Master Chief's visor color) and I didn't care for the peto-bismol chewable. I have of course the X3 1MB BIOS across 4 banks, but I have a evox, iND-BIOS and X2 BIOS on banks 1, 2 and 3. I used the EVtool to modify the evox BIOS to remove the pepto-pill, set the default LED color to orange and kept modifying the XBOX logo colors, tweaking them to look just right by flashing the evox bank on the X3 many times through HTTP to get the colors looking right and finally reflash the HALO box just once with the best looking BIOS. I'll use this for future XBOXes, especially when modding other's XBOXess that just need a simple looking gaming XBOX and to make it look/work seamlessly. I will try to get a better looking evox logo that sticks out enough to give the creators recognition, but not for XBOX owners to go go WTF is that? A pepto-bismol tablet?

I picked up a scruffy looking Xbox version 1.2 for £10 (pound sterling here in the U.K.) It has an X3 inside! I was surprised i unsoldered it and I’m going to list it on eBay lol

Quite frankly, I'm growing tired of seeing the "Check out my super rare Xecuter 3 Xbox" reddit threads, youtube videos and forum topics. The "Xecuter 3 is rare" meme is a perpetuated LIE and needs to die already! I was a veteran of the xbox scene back in its heyday and Team Xecuter dominated the market share for years and sold tens of thousands of these chips. Every man and his dog had an X3 and the X3 control panel, including me. I remember having two Xecuter 3 (non CE's) just laying around in a box in original unopened packaging, you couldn't give these things away back in the day because EVERY man and his dog had one, so I just threw them in the trash! I saw a few buy-it-now auctions recently on ebay for Xecuter 3 brand new and the seller was asking 600 euros, I almost choked on my beer when i read that considering i paid $60 AUD for mine back in 2004. Complete and utter insanity! If you paid more than $30 for a used one, even $150, or bought a 600 euro, you deserve to be fleeced of your cash!

You had 2 brand new in box and threw them away? Don't look at sold eBay listings for brand new X3 chips, you'll probably be kicking your past self. To the broader point: Yes, I agree. I still think all the threads seeing X3 hardware are cool, but it definitely isn't a rarity in the world of Xbox modchips.

I've done my Wii, WiiU, Switch, PS1, PS1 Classic, and I've ordered McBoot to get into that for my PS2. I have my PS3 modded and my 360 Jtagged too but I didn't do those. I'd like to try expand. Doing an original Xbox would b cool. I have 3. One not modded, one modded and one modded but has error 16 or something. I'm thinking or been told with this error then I should mod it so since its been broken for ages it might be a good starter or learning console, especially because its already been modded. What do u reckon? Maybe take it apart?

Yeah the front panel that came with the chip I had to line the wires flat under one of the USB ports and tape it down. I also never had an issue with slack either
