EDIT Nov 21, 2022: *Cerbios v2.1.0* was released today with support for v1.6 motherboards. There have also been many developments over the past months including UDMA5 support for supported SATA adapters. Be sure to get in touch with the Cerbios team on Discord to say hello and get the most up-to-date info: discord.gg/VcdSfajQGK Original comment: As mentioned in the outro, I'll revisit this pinned comment for the next couple of months to address recurring questions that may arise about this project or my experience with Cerbios. Regarding the Aladdin Modchip: there are reports that some newer Aladdin XTs are only flashable using a programmer and will fail when flashed in the Xbox. I have not experienced this yet on any of my recent Aladdin XTs despite receiving the same ones that some folks have reported trouble with (49LF020A). Your mileage may vary so best to be prepared for a potential unsuccessful flash by picking up a spare Aladdin XT or just buying a better modchip altogether. I always flash using Resctoox v6.0 as I demonstrate in this video and have not had any problems (yet). Feel free to share your experience with this as I'm sure it will be helpful for folks trying this mod. I don't recommend trying Cerbios without a modchip (i.e. TSOP) if you're a beginner. Fixing a bricked TSOP wouldn't be fun. Swapping a $10 modchip is a piece of cake. HDD Cluster Size: I chose a HDD cluster size of 512K, even though 2-4TB drives can use 256K clusters and save lots of space when copying small files. The problem with 256K clusters is the directory limit of 4096 files per folder. This sounds like a lot, but many (uncompressed) games have 6000+ files of artwork or sound in sub folders. You won't have this problem when using XISOs. Unfortunately my game collection is extracted from archives and I have little desire to recollect ISOs of all my games. The only downside to 512K clusters is wasted space (1.6TB collection on PC took 2.5TB of space on Xbox). This is acceptable to me because storage is cheap and I just want all my games on one Xbox. Do you have an ISO collection? Hit me up! ;)

@@4ujeff Alas, you likely have one of the Aladdins that can't be flashed in the Xbox (see note above). You can flash it with a programmer or if you don't have access to one you can pick up an Xblast Aladdin XT from ModzvilleUSA which can be flashed directly from the OS on the modchip.

I was lucky as a kid, My dad bought an xbox and had his friend mod it for me. So many memories playing splitscreen with friends and endless hours playing single player games. The good days of going to a movie rental place, Renting a game then downloading it to the console, It had every SN/Gamecube game as well. I still have it and sometimes start it up for nostalgia. I think my dad realized he had made a mistake when he woke up the following morning to find me still in the living room playing SSX 3 and fuzion frenzy, It was the first all nighter I had ever pulled and can still remember the pure excitement I had when exploring every new game for the first time.

This video brought back a lot of memories for me. A little under twenty years ago I was heavily involved in Xbox modding and repair. I would pick up units cheap from pawn shops that had bad laser lenses in them, replace the lens (can you even get those anymore?), and sell or mod them for my personal use. A couple of things I recall about refurbing them is to always pull the power supply and resolder the pins where the power cord goes in. There were so many failures due to the solder joints on the pins cracking that Microsoft sent out free power cords with GFI breakers in them to keep from burning down people's houses. Also as far as temps go I have never encountered the need to redo the thermal paste. I've got a couple of boxes still plugged into our TVs that I've used as media centers for over fifteen years with no problems. I will also mention that the main reason the fans on the 1.0 boxes get noisy is because they are sleeve bearing units. The bearing just wallows out and the fan shaft vibrates. I think on those I just got heat sinks from the 1.6 boxes and swapped them out. Also I found that putting too much lubricant on the gears in the DVD drive actually collected dust over time and caused more problems than dry gears (dust sticks to that lube and the extra gunk would tend to wear the drive belts out). All in all a very good video. It's amazing how much easier the installers have gotten from those days. I kept quite a few large 7200 RPM IDE drives just for these boxes (we don't have a lot of games) but I did tinker with a SATA to IDE adapter one time. I put a 120 gig SSD in there for kicks. It was wicked fast in the menus and loading games. Again I enjoyed the video and the links. I might pull one of the old units off the shelf (I still have several original Xboxes and PS2s left from those days) and try out some of these new tools.

To me, this looks like an official repair job where they replaced the disc drive. Especially since the drive has additional, but seemingly official labels on it and a date of 2003, which would be too late for a 1.0 xbox.

You are such a good communicator and you do everything with love. That build is so clean and you cover every detail down to loosening the screws on the GPU fan. I can't imagine any way to be more thorough. I value teachers that explain the "why" and not just the "what" or "do this". All this while presenting in a genuine, not boring, not trying to be over-the-top funny, gimmicky, or emulating another channel. You deserve more subs. I would not hold it against you or skip over a god awful sponsor segment for Manscaped, Raid Shadow Legends, NordVPN, etc.. You deserve to get paid for the amazing free content you provide!* /Butt kissing over... This is so nostalgic! I soft-modded an OG Xbox around ~2010? It was a later version but I forget which 1.3 or 1.5? I think?... Anyways, it involved hot unplugging the IDE from the hard drive at a certain time during boot. I was very nervous because this is not really something IDE drives are designed to do. I even ran an alligator clip between the Xbox an PC ground/chassis. _I am not sure if this was a good or bad idea as I had (as a stupid 20 year old) decided partying was more important than taking advantage of my full two year scholarship for basic digital/analog EET and dropped out half way through_ I believe the purpose of doing it like this was to catch the drive in an "unlocked" state. It took a few tries to get the timing correct. I then nervously plugged the IDE cable into my AMD Windows 2k PC and booted it up. I may have had to hot-plug there too, can't recall. There was a similar but much more basic FATX explorer program I was able to access the partition with. I installed a launcher (EvolutionX or something?), XBMC, some game ROM images, DSL (Damn Small Linux), various video and audio files at different resolutions, codecs, containers, etc... for testing what that baby could play back. I also installed an FTP server/client on both my PC and Xbox. After re-installing the drive that baby booted up to a beautiful new menu and maybe asked me to configure a few things. *I had the same goosebumps as Borderline OCD! and I have them now as I type this!* *Everything worked! Goosebumps intensified!* I immediately busted out the soldiering iron, cutters/strippers, flux, and heat shrink. Shaking with excitement, I repurposed an old XBOX controller extension cable and USB extension cable into a propriety to standard USB adapter. Now I had a mouse, keyboard, and flash drive all working through a USB 2.something hub! *There are four things I remember being so amazed, proud, excited by:* 1. Transfer everything over FTP. This was my first time setting it up and I think I used FileZilla on the PC. 100Mbit felt so fast back then! 2. I was able to watch the original BBC's Planet Earth @1080p without even re-encoding or anything! I forget the format/container... MKV maybe? 3. I had a full desktop OS with DSL with a working keyboard and mouse! It was no Ubuntu but still was incredible at the time! 4. I was able to play (laggy but still amazing at the time) Mario Kart 64, Super Mario 64, and the *GOAT (imo) GOLDENEYE FARKING 64* through emulation! Emulation of even earlier consoles was like I was on bare metal! XBMC has since forked off into Kodi which is amazing and Plex (also great) even has roots in the source and in developers, I believe. My quick Google search comes up with a lot of people debating about it. I am working on a home NAS. I am torn between Ubuntu Server, OMV, Fedora, FreeNAS, TrueNAS core. I want to run a media server and play around with Apache2 for practicing web developement, Pihole, VM's, etc.. Jellyfin vs Emby vs Plex vs Kodi Dockers vs Jails So many options, so much more research and tinkering, not enough time in a day!

Big tip, and you can watch Borderline do it in here too, if you remelt and mix in leaded solder, it lowers the melting point of the factory solder and makes it easier to remove. After that it's just down to flux+solder wick (or fine stranded copper wire can do in a pinch)+heat and you should be able to get them cleared out. Another option, but you probably need 2 people to do it, is get one of the spring loaded solder suckers and have one person heat the hole from one side with a soldering iron, and the other person on the other side with the solder sucker. Once the first person has it heated up, they let up just slightly with the soldering iron to make sure they're not fully sealing it off, and then hit the button on the other side and it should suck all the solder out if you had a good seal with the sucker.

That pink gummy stuff is called PCM (Phase Change Material). It is sometimes pretty hard at room temperature but when it gets hot it flows more like standard thermal paste. Acetone is awesome at getting PCM off luckily.

Wholly recommend not trying to remove the heatsinks without applying heat first. Either run the console for 15-30m or use a heat gun. Very easy to damage the chips trying to pry them off at room temp.

Yup. Disconnect the fans and power it up for a few mins til the heatsink is warm to the touch (not hot enough to burn you, but pretty warm). Then twist the heatsink off (don't pull straight up).

Absolutely amazing soldering job! It's refreshing to see such a skill on YT! BTW I might be totally wrong but it seems like your soldering iron tip might be oxidized a bit. I usually dip it hot in citric acid crystals mixed with pieces of solder wire.
@BorderlineOCD

The tip itself shouldn't be oxidized, I clean it after each use and tin it with tip tinner. Are you referring to the shaft above the tip itself? That will definitely discolor.
@greengohm
@greengohm 2 жыл бұрын
@@BorderlineOCD I think my opinion was skewed by moments like in 18:18. Which is not fair as seconds later the tip was back to being nice and shiny. Ignore my comment then. Well just the part about oxidization - I still stand behind everything else :) Looking forward to you next videos!

I've always enjoyed tinkering but I only started going deep on this stuff about 2 years ago. If you look at my earliest videos you'll see my inexperience and a major quality difference overall. All that's to say if it's something you enjoy, you just gotta spend more time on it and practice. It's not glorious at first but once you have a couple of successful projects under your belt its a major confidence boost. We live in a great time my friend. Everything you could possibly ever want to learn is just a KZbin video or Google search away.

Nice and tidy work as usual, bud. You're right in being proud of that mod work, it turned out quite nice and neat. I actually have a v1.0 system myself, with a 4TB HDD which I have had multiple partitions on for a couple years now. I will definitely be looking into Cerbios in order to clean things up in a similar manner. I don't have modchip though, so, will likely be flashing TSOP, but, should work out fine, I'm sure. Thanks for the video, as I haven't kept up with OG XBox much lately, and I would not have discovered Cerbios without your video here.

Yeah that was a nerve wrecking thing!! I remember it well!! Hot swapping the IDE HDD to a PC to extract the HDD KEY, that was only possible if the drive was unlocked by the XBOX when it's turned on. (If you did it wrong, you could brick your original HDD, and an HDD from another XBOX doesn't work due to the KEY linked to the other XBOX...) You also had to copy 2 DIR's from the drive, with a special file manager on your pc.
