Highly underrated series, I have two full copies of the initial run too. There was something very different about it, very cerebral and left of centre. I constantly seek out any scraps of info on it that I can. To my understanding, the creative team didn't want to really have Omega interact with the rest of the Marvel but editorial pushed it, hence the 'misleading' covers. And speaking of, I love that cover of issue 5!

I thought Omega was very profound when I was a kid...though I don't think I found them all back then...missing issues always added to the profundity for some reason. So sad that Gerber and co couldn't finish the story... :(

It seemed more profound than other superhero comics because it was the only one that was asking questions of the reader. Too bad we never got the answers but it was still fun to ponder them.

I loved *Omega the Unknown.* The boy protagonist of the series, I believe, was named James-Michael Starling, and I don't think anyone called him just Michael. The closest Gerber & Skrenes ever came to finishing the series was writing a different series, *Hard Time,* which shared some of *Omega* 's qualities. That series also ended prematurely, but this time, they were able to write a conclusion which summarized what they presumably would have written at much greater length had the series continued.

That’s right. The always called him by both his first names. That added to the quirkiness of the series. I’m going to have to check out Hard Time. I remember it but I don’t think I read more than the first issue.

I am surprised to see Ed Hannigan's name on a 25 cents comic book from the early Bronze Age. I associate him more with the 1980's Copper Age, with Cloak & Dagger, and cover designs from that period. As an early comic book collector, I tended to stay away from any Steve Gerber books which were too weird for my tastes. To me Howard the Duck didn't belong at Marvel. OMEGA THE UNKNOWN was strange in many ways, but one of the reasons he is so forgotten is because his appareances seemed to have been limited to his own short lived series. I don't remember ever seeing guest-starring in an other titles, not even series that were showcases for third -tier characters such as MARVEL TEAM-UP or MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE. Even in the Defenders, (I'll take your word for it), but he mustn't have been there long because I don't remember him at all. Then again, I think I came in late in the series with the Defenders. Aside from the recent limited series written by novelist Jonathan Lethem, I don't think Marvel ever tried to bring him back . Heck even Doctor Druid was an Avenger for a while! And yet, everyone I know who was a fan of OMEGA seem to really like the series. A lost classic if there ever was one...

There are a few of us Omega fans out there but not many. He was just such a weird non-superhero type superhero. You really had to like a mystery with no answers to like the book. And you're right. I don't remember him showing up anywhere else but in those issues of the Defenders. Maybe because his own comic really wasn't about him. He was just one character in an ensemble cast.

@@JaredOsborn BTW, you were lucky with those genuine "near mint" copies from Mile High Comics. I ordered from them a few times many years ago and had mostly bad experiences with their interpetation of "near mint" that could easily stretch down to Fine/VF- with loads of spine tix...

@@Rangersly I bought a bunch of cheap NM odds and ends comics from Mile High in 2000-2002. I had no complaints but around 2005 their prices rose and I began to hear a lot of complaints about them. I switched over to Lonestar and got some more odd comics that were okay but haven't used them in about five or seven years.

Did he end up being a robot? I don't even remember the issues of the Defenders I read with him in them. I just remember being disappointed by them.
