Before I started watching your videos and those of VW Family Farm I had no idea how cattle ranchers handled their cattle. I guess I thought it was like old movies where men on horses just drove them around. There is so much "hands on" work that you guys do. Love your videos.

As always, great video. You said "I'm not a cattle judge." I'm not either and I never got to the point where I could pick out the "best" heifer. But I could sure pick out a bad one. And, to me, that was the more important skill. "Good enough is good enough" for commercial cattle IMO.
@jayholcomb32224 жыл бұрын
You have a good eye for heifer replacement! Absolutely beautiful heifers. Saw you had one heifer with those horns budding out. Unfortunately, that’s what can happen with Hereford. Even those they are “polled”, Hereford as a breed itself are naturally horned cattle. Somewhere back in their bloodlines, horns were present with a dam or sire. Those heifers also seem calm and not high headed, which is a bonus. Good video.

Once past the height, frame width, and temperament - a balanced frame and straight topline are things a judge would look for. Coat condition, straight legs (not knock-kneed) and how the animal looks when walking are important - the animal can look good standing there, but if it tracks funny when moving there could be just an injury but there might be a muscle or bone abnormality that could be passed on to future calves. That's why judges like to see the animal move around

Tyler are you familiar with the RFID tags the FDA and USDA are pushing for all cattle by 2023? If so which program/brand are you leaning toward. If not familiar the only tags, they look like shell casing end,, the USDA is gonna recognize starts with 840 and has US inside a shield that resembles an interstate sign. Companies with non compliant tags are selling cheap beware. I’m leaning toward CattleMax for tags and information system. For less than $500 you can get started with reader that interfaces with you phone. You can enter vaccinations, worming, weight. Looking for other opinions from a producer closer too my size operation 60-80 head total max.

All or part of their reproductive tract might be missing and for a high percentage this is true (@95%?) It just makes economical sense to make the best marketing decision. You can have a vet our qualified person out to determine that. Even if you put the money into finding out if they have a full reproductive tract they may be missing functioning ovaries, something you just don't know until they are old enough to cycle.
