I finally got my hands on two and had to walk from both due to slimy dealers. I'm not paying a $5-8k markup and $2-4k of useless addons on a Maverick. Paying $7-12k over MSRP for a budget truck is just dumb. I've pretty much given up on the brand. Ford needs to get this under control. I want a Ford vehicle, I can afford any brand/vehicle I want, but refuse to do business with such shady dealers. They're ruining the brand.

EVERY mainstream car manufacturer has dealerships like this. This horror story is not unique to this dealership and certainly not unique to Ford. It's actually reassuring that Ford took an interest in this debacle; I had a friend call Hyundai about a huge dealership issue and Hyundai corporate shrugged them off. The Maverick is a special case because it is a hot vehicle and people have to have them; like was said in the video, the dealer could blow the person who ordered it off and sell it several times over to someone willing to pay the premium.
@markcarroll-vb4ye Жыл бұрын
The dealership here in Mississippi was trying to do the same thing to me for $3,000 above MSRP. I too ordered my Maverick 7 months ago for the agreed price of MSRP plus tax, title and license. Ford you are really doing a bad job and you aren't the same company my loyal Ford Family (going back to the 50's) knew and loved. I am so glad I bought in January 2019 before all the pandemic stuff hit. My car will be paid off in December (less than 48 months!) and I won't need to buy another. I am not going to pay over inflated prices nor will I play the games the dealer did with you. I also sold cars and you are never required to use their financing. "Increasingly common" is an understatement. I tried to shop through 5 dealers in the Minneapolis MN area and 1 in WI, and all played these games. All of them would post MSRP on their site and would not talk about a markup until asked or when it came time to deal. Also one dealer is driving their Mavericks for a few hundred miles and then selling them as used with a "fair market adjusted pricing". Assuming that's to bend around looking bad for marking them up past MSRP... The Maverick is a cool truck but does not make sense financially above MSRP. Ford is really burning it's bridges with its consumers that want to be Ford owners but won't put up with their dealer BS.

@@huie1983 Couldn't agree with you more on this. I'm finding more and more that no haggle price locations (E.g; CarMax model) are the best experience for consumers currently, I just picked up a 22 GMC Canyon Elevation Crew Cab 4WD (~$42k sticker brand new before TTL) with 8.5k miles on it for $35,000 with a total of like $240 for tags and title, plus they gave me 4-5k over what franchise dealers would for my trade. At the end of the day, what most consumers truly hate is the last minute shaft, undisclosed amounts/fees, etc. Personally, I would maybe buy a vehicle that is slightly above MSRP if the dealership is just straight forward on their other aspects of pricing. I can at least respect if somebody says "we're charging $1,000 over suggested retail because of how rare these are to come by currently."; or similar. Not when you specifically order a model from the OEM, though - that's absolute bullshit. It blows my mind that as business owners, these franchisees do not see how these practices will inevitably catch up to them. Burning a bridge with a consumer in their 30s is probably the worst long term decision you can make as a dealer - think about all of the missed future opportunities from potential vehicle sales.

Too many order holders are getting bullied when they go to pick up their Mavs under the threat (duress) that if they don't pay 5k over, the dealer will sell their build to someone else at 10-15k over. My dealer actually had a +10k ADM sticker on my Mav when my wife and I showed up, probably to justify trying to charge us more, as if doing us a favor. This is shown on my video uploaded 11-6-22. The finance guy tried to get us to sign in a hurry and got mad when I asked questions. I took a photo of the original contract he put in front of us before we made him change it. Oh and like you, we paid their $500 paint protection because the experience was so exhausting and we gave up on that. I don't think it was ever applied.

Dealerships know that they often have the upper hand. They know that buying a car is an emotional thing. Many, if not most buyers are payment-driven and don’t care how many years it will take to actually pay off the vehicle or the out the door price. I’m glad you stood your ground. They flat out lied to you about the $500 “mandatory glass, wheel, whatever” protection after you finally negotiated. That’s something that financing I’m assuming asked you about when you got to them? When bought my 2021 Ranger, the financing guy asked me about that same stuff and if I wanted to add it, never told me it is mandatory. I didn’t want that, so I didn’t take it. I was actually very pleased with my buying process at my dealership here in Arizona when I bought my Ranger, though it was on the lot already and not a special order. I was never forced to add on some “mandatory” thing, to them at least, that most certainly wasn’t mandatory. Your dealership sounds like the worst. Bought my first new truck in 1973 at age 22. Since then I've purchased many new cars and sadly the buying experience hasn't changed. It's wear the customer down and he or she finally gives in. The shortest period of time to get out of the dealership was when I bought a new 2003 Ford cargo van. It was a cash sale and yet I still spent over 2 hours with the finance dealer with him trying to inflate the deal with additional items I kept rejecting. I'd love to buy a new Maverick but don't want to go through another nightmare buying experience, it's just not worth it.

Thanks so much for sharing this with all of us. I have had so many similar experiences at dealers and it's crazy because I used to be in the business as a General Sales manager but luckily I worked for dealership where the owner truly was a honest and good person and this stuff didn't go on in our store. It's so sad as you say to think of folks who don't know or understand the business , they truly get robbed. I've seen people try to trade their car in only to find out that they are so upside down in the value versus what they owe. So many times when I would look at their paperwork from the purchase they were sold warranties for $2000 and protection packages for another $2000 and then an insane interest rate so they would be impossible to trade in and unfortunately even when we would explain to them what happens in many cases they'd get mad at us thinking we were giving them a low ball number on their trade. It is sad and the manufacturers like Ford need to step in and stop this nonsense that goes on at far too many dealers. Thanks for sharing and I love your Maverick. We would like to get one but the dealers I've been in contact in our local market all want between $5000-$10,000 over sticker and I'm not willing to do that. They all have the attitude, that oh well, we could sell in ten times for that mark up so if your not willing to, goodbye. Great customer service that ruins Ford's reputation and also their desire to bring an affordable small and unique truck to market. Thanks again for sharing, you Rock!

Glad to hear you start off by repeating what I said over and over myself after buying my Maverick from my local dealer. I feel like I rescued my truck from them. After test driving one and deciding to buy one they had on their lot, I called to put down a down payment for them to hold that particular vehicle, and in so doing inadvertently did the price negotiation for the final out the door price over the phone instead of at the dealer, which everyone says is the thing to do. I balked at a bunch of add ons, one of which was a dealer installed item that could not be taken off. The salesman not only should have told me about this add on up front, but missed the opportunity to upsell this add on to me. While going back and forth over the items, the salesman, a young guy, put his boss on the phone who basically yelled at me the whole time all the while throwing the young salesman under the bus right in front of him, saying the kid didn't know what he was doing. Astounding. The other thing I was suggested doing and did was to get outside financing, so when I went to pick up the truck, I had a check from my bank (who gave me the best deal) which they were all visibly unhappy about. No warm and fuzzy feelings here. They said they didn't care and that they don't make any money on their in house financing. That's just bull crap. After all that, the young salesman wanted me to rate my experience with him as a salesman while standing in front of him, and then got upset at me when I had to honestly give him a 2 out of 5. More astounding. I had to put the dealer plate frame on my plate to drive it home. First thing I did when I got home was to take that plate frame off (made of cheap plastic) and throw it in the trash, as well as take off the dealer decals.

Besides the dealership expierence being horrible which is S.O.P. (Standard Operating Procedure) for most dealerships and especially near large cities is purchasing brand new in any how manner way or form as regardless of whom the manufacturer is or which dealership - to much greed from second one/moment one plus the depreciation before the ink is dry. Problem #2 is purchasing for want vs. need. Problem #3 is unless paying cash totally which is best any financing of any kind should be no longer than 36 months. If it would have to go longer than 36 - to long. Problem #4 as you will find with time is not purchasing something with a real engine in it let alone a real tranmission. Using Ford as the example in this situation - a glorified B&S/Kohler Garden Tractor engine that needs to have 1-2 turbos strapped to as well as lot of electronic whiz bang/goo so it might actually have some "get up and go" to it is pure BS. Transmission wise is no different and when possible even today is a manual transmission as with a normal engine tied to a manual and decent maintaince will outlast the little tiny turbo charged piece of crap for the long term. Buy used; pay cash; buy for need not want; & the whole idea is to keep all costs low - not as high as possible. Live within means and under your means is always the better way to go. Had a dealer pull the same crap you had once and once only - walked away and that was over 10 years ago - still alive and just fine....

Due to your experience, you were able to make some sort of deal.. How about most of us who do not have that experience or your blind intent to consummate this deal What you did only deepens the problem facing car buyers.
