Real cool to see the other rowhouse with bare framing; it's like viewing the house with x-ray vision. Got to love that room with the high ceiling. When someone mentions tall bookshelves, I always imagine the joy of having one of those sliding ladders.

In case you didn't already know, the easiest chimney demo is to knock it down into the chimney starting at the top. You take advantage of the flue as a chute to keep you from having to lug every brick down. One person up top knocking them in, and someone below pulling them out as they fall (use a shovel so you don't get hit) means minimal going up and down.
@ChrisHytha

Unfortunately the whole chimney seems to already be full of bricks, so it looks like I'll have to do it the old fashion way.

I just want to say thanks for turning out another episode each week, making it interesting, beautiful to look at, and informative all at once and a little bit different each week, AND doing it while also dealing with the fact that everything is already going a lot slower than anticipated! I am highly impressed by the creativity, passion, and work you put into these videos, sharing your unique point of view and area of expertise with us while rapidly growing with the challenges and taking on new jobs on the fly! I was worried that you'd drop off the face of KZbin, so to speak, when it didn't quite go to plan as you started. You were stopped in your tracks a little bit, but then you went, "Well, while we're all here..." and made this project so much bigger than I thought it would be initially. I love seeing you go on road trips and taking us out to see other parts of Philadelphia as well - like a mini vacation :) And these streets full of rowhomes remind me of many european cities around me (well - the old parts, that weren't destroyed in any wars at least), including the one I live in. Makes me feel a little bit at home even though I've never been to Philadelphia. So yeah, thank you for sharing and I hope everything goes according to plan in the future! I'm looking forward to following you on your quest :D

i for one loved the intro. there's a lot of slow repetitive steps to a demo/reno of this magnitude and you'd go a little crazy if you didn't get a little silly once in a while. as someone who had a car crash through her house once, we wanted to paint the kool-aid man on the temporary wall. it was a stressful and expensive time, and sometimes you got to get silly to stay sane.

It's crazy to see how they basically build a wooden treehouse like structure inside of an old house. From my European perspective that's so alien, especially the way this thin wood is used, but not necessarily a bad way to tackle such a situation. But one thing I can't shake is the feeling that everything will be squeaking before long. It just feels like it has to happen somehow.

Re: on taking down your plaster-on-lathe (POL) ceilings. I have - in my Edwardian, 15 ceilings that were POL, and many of them were in bad shape. When I first started fixing up my place ( a room by room process) I took some down. Like yours, they were filled with over a hundred years of dust and filth. Most notably, because my house was heated with wood, and then coal, before finally forced air gas in the 1940s, there was much toxic ash and dust in between them. However, where the damage to the ceiling wasn't actually threatening them falling down, I got some really great advice to NOT pull them down, but instead put drywall on top (or rather, underneath) them. This was cautioned to me as, when you take down a POL ceiling, you lose a massive amount of sound insulation. And it's proven itself to be true. In the spaces where I did take down the ceiling, I stuffed sound insulating rockwool (10 inches), and then hung 5/8 drywall (fire code essential in my area) on sound insulating resilient channels for the new ceiling. However, even with all these all these added sound sound dampeners, the sound transfer is still much greater than the areas where I've just screwed drywall on the old POL ceiling. So for all the remaining rooms in my building I've sealed off the POL ceiling, and then - within a single unit put up 3/8" drywall (which is light, easy, and one person can put it up). Where I have a separate unit I've put firecode 5/8" which is a little heavier. With both the 3/8 and 5/8 added to the old POL, the lack of sound transfer is astounding, far better than anything else, other than perhaps spray foam. I guess what I'm saying is -if you absolutely don't have to take down your POL ceilings, it's much easier, and quieter to drywall over them (or under them, if you get my meaning). You can seal all that nasty dust inside - where you never come in contact with it again, and have a much cosier, quieter home.
@ChrisHytha
@ChrisHytha Сағат бұрын
Thanks for your insight. I have seen that done as well, and I can imagine the sound proofing is crazy. That is the biggest downside of replacing with plaster. Unfortunately in this case, the entire roof is going to be demolished to make way for new floor framing, so it was essential to remove this ceiling entirely. I have one in the living room that is in decent shape, I might just keep it as is, but could also go the cover with drywall route.

Don’t forget about the air ceiling and insulating prior to drywall. Find a local weatherization company, or I’m in Baltimore and happy to make a drive up to walk you through some concepts. Once you put drywall up, it’s a lot harder to treat some of the areas that you have now exposed. @@ChrisHytha housewrap definitely helps, and I’ll still recommend finding somebody to come in and air seal with a one-part fire blocking spray foam at all of your exterior framing connections as well as plumbing penetrations and electrical penetrations into your attic pre-insulation. @ChrisHytha
@ChrisHytha 2 сағат бұрын
With the cities codes, and the house classified as Type-5B (Unprotected wood) I believe it is fine to leave the exposed beams as is. The main fire rating concern is between houses, to ensure a fire doesn't spread quickly to neighbors. That said, you never know what an inspector will say, but I've seen exposed joists like this in several philly homes, so should be fine.

That 2nd house was pretty amazing. One thing I hate about America is that nobody builds anymore downtowns/urban living areas. It's all ugly strip malls suburban nightmares designed around cars. The only urban/downtowns we have are 80-100 yrs old earliest! (And I'm a country boy that loves being out in the county) --- but that loft area (bookshelf/cigar chairs) area has so much character. I love the small footpints and several stories. It makes for so much more intimate housing/streets to walk. Still enjoying the series. Cheers from rural Tennessee!

You really need to invest in better PPE. I"d at least have on full coveralls when demoing. I hope you have done lead testing on the ceilings and walls that you are demoing. There is high probability of lead in the old paints (not to mention mold) that were fine when covered up but are air dispersed when you demo. Invest in some cheap tarps for the floor when demoing (saves time on cleanup) and consider investing in some zip walls to keep dust from going everywhere. I get that you’re trying to save the staircase because it saves floor space. But is it safe? And will it be best for resale and your uses? Have you ever tried to get a couch or large mattress up stairs like that? Have you ever slipped down a set of stairs like that? And all that work to expose 5 original ceiling joists? You kind of lost me-but it’s your house and your decision.
@ChrisHytha
@ChrisHytha Сағат бұрын
Its been a challenging choice, and you're right that the "right" thing to do might be rebuilding them, but personally I love the fact that a stair like this is a relic of history, and one like it can never be built again. I know the house will be less suitable for older folks, but for now its a young neighborhood, and with my age now, I'm not worried about it.
@ChrisHytha
@ChrisHytha Сағат бұрын
Also, as for resale, many of the homes in the neighborhood, and also many across the city have stairs like these, so people in the city are not too bothered by them. I found comps for resale value of homes with similar stairs to make sure the money I plan to put into the house will be worthwhile.
@ChrisHytha
@ChrisHytha Сағат бұрын
Oh! And a final thing - regarding furniture, right above this stair is a light well, open to the 3rd floor. I can hoist things up to the 3rd floor through this hole, and it also gives me maneuverability with mattresses and such with the extra space above. Not as easy as normal stairs, but workable.
@ChrisHytha

It was very unexpected that there was 0 insulation anywhere in the house, but it is actually a big perk, because it all would have had to be redone anyway!
@bellablue5285
@bellablue5285 3 сағат бұрын
@ChrisHytha normally I would say no insulation is bad, but honestly, that is ideal. Haven't been able to tell, is this double-walled by chance? I know the air gap method was a means of insulation back in the day, though I don't think it's used nowadays due to firestop requirements
@ChrisHytha

@@bellablue5285 It is not double walled, not quite sure what that means though. It was built oldschool, with the ventilation air gap in the walls to dry things out.

It is possible, so a respirator is essential, but it was not widely used in materials until 1930s - 70s. I would be more worried about it if the house had insulation installed in the 70s remodel that happened, that would have certainly been aspestos

Tearing down the wooden structure was the only realistic outcome from the start, I'm afraid. Why is supporting the stairs such an issue ? Make a temporary stepladder out of it 2 wooden beams under the stair"s stringers running to the ground If necessary, spread the load on the floor using another beam Triangle brace the beams so the stairs can't fold forward or sideways

Once we get into the demo / framing the plan for rebuilding the framing there may evolve. And I agree, tearing down most of that damaged wood is the best option. I was just reluctant for a long time due to cost, but going the self-GC route opened up the possibility. It will be much better in the end!

Click-bait title. He's really started hamming it up for the views now. Obviously there is no reason drop through a hole in a ceiling, but this guy has got caught up in having an audience and is really starting to perform for the camera and views now. I'm so saddened how social media is perverting people's natural impulses to do anything for attention.

Honestly, its embrassing. He is an educated man with degrees and he is doing these silly things for attention. All it would take is one nail on the floor in the area he demo'd to jump down onto (in sneakers!) to really hurt himself. It started off as a thoughtful, intelligent, channel, but its a shame how quickly it has devolved into these silly antics. You are a smart man, act accordingly and you will be rewarded and respected for it. You have skills and intelligence, a lot more to offer than other silly people doing whatever silliness for clicks and views. You don't need the silliness, focus on the intelligent content.
