@kraigadams I am watching this today for the first time, so far I love it! I think the people that don't have any shoes or less shoes, don't even have the choice of owning more, it is not a decision base on choice, it is money base. I am going to look for your videos! Happy I found you here! And I agree Matt bring him back!

The point of minimalism is to stop letting stuff control your life. If you go to the opposite extreme and obsess over having as little as possible (among other minimalistic obsessions), then the same stuff is STILL controlling your life. This is a pervasive problem in the minimalism community.
@mattdavella6 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I hear from a lot of people who are agonizing over their things and don't know what to get rid of. And I'm like, you're missing the point. The point is to not let things get in the way.

Yeh when Kraig was saying about obsessing about having the least stuff, and Matt steered it away a little and I feel perhaps that’s because he doesn’t have that issue.

As a person from the radio business, I am fascinated by Kraig. He has one of the "most talk radio voices" I have ever heard, I could listen to him for hours. I think he is also a minimalist when it comes to talking. He is so efficient it is amazing, no vocal garbage, no nonsense, etc. As a motivational speaker, he could wake up the dead...

Thankyou for being informed on OCD! Those of us who have it, immensely appreciate it when people research and find it's not just lining up pens/cleanliness.

Thank you for letting us join in on this conversation. I wanted to add a couple points but, at this time I can only remember one. Around 44:23 Kraig mentions that some people will come up and immediately ask his subscriber count. Sadly, it's not only KZbin and creators it's everyone in the American culture. Normally, when people meet someone for the first time it's, "Hi my name is Taryn." They exchange their name and then the NEXT question is almost always, "so, what do you do for a living?". From that question alone people are gathering micro information of a rough estimate of income, socioeconomic status, hierarchy, etc. That is one of my biggest pet peeves when I first meet someone. And now because of social media and the feeling that we already "know" somebody, we go straight for the jugular and by asking about subscribers it's as if they are asking how much money you make. It's sad. But, it's everywhere, not only social media. When I first meet someone I try to talk about whatever we are doing and then naturally the conversation progresses to other topics ☺️✌️ great conversation ☺️

Hearing Matt talk about always being caught up inside your own head really resonated with me as I've had that happen to me a lot last year and part of the year before as well. When it comes to that along with minimalism, I feel like it's important to have that balance of time for yourself and to just reflect/think, but at the same time, we also need to allow ourselves to just be present and spend less time worrying over things that haven't happened yet or don't even exist.

Only around 12 minutes into this podcast, but the touching on forcing growth and forcing change.. that hits so close to home for me right now. The past year has thrown my life into so much disarray for so many different reasons, big one of the biggest was "I want to, need to, and WILL change." That turned into "I can't ever be content with anything because everything I have is old and has to many attachments to 'who I was' and will hold me back." That got real destructive real fast, let's say that; but now, closing out 2018, I realized that I just spent a year forcing things that didn't need to happen in the first place, let alone when I wanted them to happen! And this podcast I feel is going to be the perfect bookend to the era of "Forcing Growth."

I think Ive always been a minimalist in a lot of ways but only by intuition. Now Im 31 and has been a couple of months since I started really get into it (after watching Minimalists on Netflix) and it is really amazing where it can take you if you actually put your mind into it. And you when you realize you can apply that not only to material stuff but to other thing (bad relantionships, bad habits that makes you waste time)... it is mindblowing. I would love for you to make a video about eating. Diet is a huge part of my life too and I would like to see your stand on that.

This video was a bit of an eye opener to something that I need to keep an eye out for. I have OCD and was a growing hoarder. I'm only a college student and I've been lugging around over 10 giant tupperware containers of things. It has been a stressful semester and I decided to combat my growing hoarding tendencies by becoming a minimalist. I now realize that while I felt like I was conquering my hoarding lifestyle, I may be just replacing it with an obsession with having so much less. I need to be sure I am not developing a compulsion for buying more to throw out more. I am still at the beginning of my minimalist journey, and need to keep this in check and not try to go too far. I suppose I thought I would just get to a point I was satisfied with the amount I'd gotten rid of and could relax. But after a week of very late nights, spending hours decluttering and organizing, this video has helped me realize first I need to stop and think about what I need and value instead of running around the apartment getting rid of things to get rid of them.

Fascinating. I've been working my way into minimalism since my early teens (31 now). I've wondered if it was a reactionary behavior. My mom has always been a hoarder. Piles of National Geographic mags, new flooring materials, fabric, anything all over every surface. You had to shimmy sideways to walk through most of our home. Once I learned that wasn't normal (going to a friends house) I started my journey. Makes me curious if I am into minimalism because I grew up in a hoarders house.

I really like focusing on what I am doing without being polluted by TV, ads and stuff. Instead I can think, learn and change my point of view without much effort, I was doing sushis (who know ls why) and talking about too much, even in minimalism is really important. Focusing on what's positive is a good way thinking, but still if you neglect the negative aspects then you are trapped. Thank you for this podcast

Wow, never thought about it like that. To basically create the content you would have wanted when you were young or inexperienced in something. It's easy to think of content the less-developed you might have wanted or needed to get to the next level because you had the actual questions and found the answers already. Another great one, sad I missed this when it came out.

I already had so much respect for you Matt, but after listening to this, I have so much more for you now. I liked the way you intelligently manoeuvred this conversation. I was familiar with Kraig’s work before this interview and actually enjoy some of his videos, but in this conversation, he came across as being full of quite a lot of s**t, which I don’t think is a requirement of being a minimalist filmmaker. You very subtly and cleverly called him out and contradicted several times, bravo for not just going with the flow 👏

Most shameful era in my history of being a creator... when I first started I was told that I NEED to do the clickbait stuff and for some time I actually did. And it seemed to work cause hey, I got the attention. And then I stopped, cause I felt so dishonest. And I still got the attention. Turns out... it was good content. I felt so ashamed about that early time that I actually went back and fixed it. I have never done that, change older creations just because I have grown and thought they weren't good enough. But I had to do it with the clickbait stuff cause I just couldn't live with myself.

I read a kindle for another reason....1. I had cataracts in both eyes at 42 years old (that’s too young and it’s very rare) I almost went totally blind waiting for the surgery and reading regular books destroy your eyes and 2. I am going paperless because of minimalism and reading a paper book goes against that for ME I totally can relate to the amazon prime....I still use it but I’m more aware of what I buy. And I want things fast because of getting used to the same day or two day shipping. I never shop in stores anymore. And I make my husband do all the grocery shopping. I used to buy way too much and he’s a very good shopper.

Your brain actually responds very differently to printed words on a page (an actual book) vs. reading on a screen! Most people who read usually do so right before bed, since actual books are relaxing and slow your mind down.. while looking at a screen does the opposite.

Hey matt, Maybe a good topic that you could cover (you glossed over quickly) is coming into this lifestyle position, growing up in a religious family, and then kind of growing out of that mentality and background, and the problems associated. So I thought that I would share. I keep a small notebook with me at all times and it's filled with daily check boxes of things that I would like to do for the day. Another box checked another win for the day. About 4 months ago I started writing in my notebook "Quiet Thought" or "Critical thought" meaning I was going to sit there in the dark for 30 min drinking coffee and thinking. No phone, no laptop, and nothing that was "On". Over the last four months, it has now become "meditation" and I just would not allow myself permission to say meditation because I thought that it was some hippy BS. I will not say that my life has changed from it but I will say, I am better for it. I almost find myself wishing for more of it during the day. I find value in it, even if I think that it's some hippy BS lol!
