I have driven this road only once, and with snow, in 2015.I loved reliving the excitement of those bends overlooking those steep drop-offs. Thanks for the scenery and the memories of driving this section of 50 a few times on my Colorado road trips. I especially enjoyed seeing it through the eyes of a big rig pro driver. I've used very similar techniques pulling a pop-up camper behind my FJ Cruiser like those you demo'ed in this video. Safe travels!

I just discovered your youtube channel a couple days ago. I'm all locked down by myself in this pandemic. And just LOVE riding shotgun on your trips. And the conversation...such interesting stuff about the countryside you drive through and the challenges and rewards of your job. Once upon a time I was driving on interstate through Wyoming on my way to WA state. And coming down out of the passes was really hairraising, because I had to keep using my brakes on the curves, and was afraid they'd burn out. The runaway truck lanes looked pretty grim. Didn't want to go there because it was late at night and it looked like a car would get buried to the axels and have to be towed out. Maybe some time you'll do a downhill out of the passes and give some pointers on going down steep grades for miles on end. Merry Christmas! Stay safe.

I've been up on the old Loveland pass. Can't remember how high that was because the last and only time i travel that pass was in 2003. I remember the hairpin turns and switchback curves.

Bob Calgary Canada : I agree with you. Most are retired. Don’t have the reflexes as when they were young. I have noticed that as I have gotten older. I have been riding a motorcycle since the early ‘70’s. I have ridden cross the country and some in Canada, many miles in the Pacific Northwest which has a lot of curvy and mountainous roads.

Highways are full of idiots who do not drive safely and focus only on their driving responsibilities. I drove long haul for a couple of years and it really helped me to become a very safe driver. I drive very defensively and constantly use my mirrors and pay attention to activity all around me, front, back and sides. I always pay special attention to what is happening way down the road. Man oh man, I can't imagine the terror of having a brake fail and going down that mountain road in a loaded big rig. I don't think you would make it far with all the curves and the chance of reaching the run away ramp seems like a pipe dream. Seems like the only option would be to put her on her side, if and when you had the chance. At night it would be 10 times worse. People don't realize that you don't descend these long down hills in a high gear and pump your brakes all the way down!

Do you mean the pickup truck with trailer at 19:30? If so he clearly crossed over before the double yellow line. He was already past him where the double yellow begin.

Oh they do. Most of these Recreational Drivers do not know the law or ignore it. Many states if not all, slower traffic is required to use pullouts. Believe these Schooner Drivers should be required to have C D L's. Most of these Road Schooners and their tows have weight and wheel base length comparable to commercial rigs. Also have to say. In Colorado, Hwy; 50 is not the loneliest Highway, watch and compare the vids. In Nevada, yes.

marsack7 Yes, Monarch Pass is in Colorado. The video starts at about Mile 193 climbing Monarch Pass and continues east over Monarch Pass to about Mile 213 halfway between Maysville and Poncha Springs.

I also think they should take a ride in the RV with a trucker driving their RV to show them how they are /are not using there equipment. Maybe takes some classes, understand that they have as big a motor as some trucks. And Gas engines do have issues on the climbs...... but so what get over, get out of the way first spot you find......AND if 50ty is your top speed, stay off the interstate.

You misjudge RVers. Many are full timers, not on vacation, driving vehicles that have trouble pulling large hills like Monarch Pass. I have driven Monarch Pass in my RV twice and I can have the same complaint about truckers trying to pass slower truckers going up hill.

The dead trees are the result of insect infestation, the mountain pine beetle and spruce beetle. If cars back up on me whether I am riding my motorcycle or driving a car/pickup I pull over so they can pass. I do pretty much what you do on my motorcycle. There is one mountain road between Sweet Home, Oregon to Sisters, Oregon where I play a game of trying not to use my brakes. Just up shifting and down shifting. I know the road very well. That motorcycle that passed you then pulled over might of did it because he heard something on his bike. Like your discussions.
