As a football coach, one of the hardest things to do is getting coaches to get out the "old school" mentality. Just because something used to be done, doesn't mean that's how it HAS to be done. Always ask why? Why do we do this? If you don't have a good reason, then find a new way.

This guy gets it. I dumped every drill I thought had no application in a football game when I was a player (monkey rolls anyone?) and used drills that were directly correlated to football as a coach. Old is not necessarily better. Work smart

I imagine this could be applied to wrestling too. So much conditioning at the expense of strength.

But energetic demands of wrestling and football are different though. In freestyle and greco roman you have two rounds of 3 minutes and 30 seconds in between. You need to be conditioned for that

I’m not gonna lie I feel pretty confident in my knowledge about S&C for the “typical” speed power sports like football, track, etc. I’d love for Elite to give us an expert speaking about training wrestlers optimally!!!

Stefan Nikolić I don't doubt. Wrestling requirements for conditioning are great, but when kids start grinding down, and picking up injuries throughout the season, and strength suffers..... Question is how to properly manage strength and conditioning so the required amount of conditioning is aquired while losing minimal strength in the process.

Dman Pisto Start with the original. It’s the best way to get familiar with the program. If you’re talking about the books however, get 531 forever. It’s got every variation of 531 you’ll need, and it outlines what program is best for your goals

Every generation thinks they invented sex. I appreciate what this guy is saying but it's nothing "new." A good coach from any era teaches kids how to play the game. They don't just give them an offensive strategy or defensive scheme and expect to get stops or score points. You have to teach kids how to move their feet and coordinate the use of their feet with their hands. You have to teach them that football is a game of angles. Most of all, you have to eliminate the things that beat you, penalties and turnovers. There is no magic drill or magic playbook or magic practice structure. I think his overarching point is: Don't just coach football ideology, teach kids how to play the game. Great coaches have been doing that for decades and 99% of them chase gimmicks.
