@skyofbob I agree that people should not be singing unless it's specifically a sing-along screening. It's extremely discourteous to all the other people in the audience. I'm just saying the musical theater people are not the ones doing that. Musical theater audiences are accustomed to sitting quietly and respectfully to watch performers perform. The rowdy crowd are not the musical theater-goers.

I’ve seen Wicked 4 times now and on the most recent watch I took my first ever photo in a theater. I waited for the title card at the end of the movie before the credits once people were walking out- it was an early show with a lot of families who left immediately. The only person still lingering when I took the picture was doing the same exact thing. On principle it’s probably not something I’d do at the theater again, but there are definitely situations where it’s not inherently offensive.

i recently went to the movies at a cheap theatre in a city I don't live in. There were people in front of me watching reels at high volume for like 10 minutes. And behind me were a couple that were snuggling and yapping for half an hour about their uni friends and their relationships. It was SO out of line. I feel like taking a photo of the title card is still just mildly annoying in the grand scheme of the bullshit people get up to in movie theatres. I had another similar experience when I watched Dune : Part 2 in theatres with some teenagers having inappropriately loud conversations behind me and taking pictures every 10 minutes.

I go to Alamo a lot because my roommates work there (I absolutely wouldn’t go if I had to pay for food) but the vibe there definitely depends on the location. there’s two in the city with one having actual normal sized theaters and that one I hate but the other is quaint and small with only about 20 seats per theater and I think the Alamo experience is much better suited to that kind of smaller format

I saw Zone of Interest at an Alamo Drafthouse and have never been more distracted during a theater experience. Waiters were scurrying by every 3 minutes! This is how people watch movies these days-they treat the film, which they’ve paid a significant amount of money to see, as a second screen. When I went to see Wicked, the three girls in front of me were on their phones the entire time-reading messages, browsing, completely disengaged. I think it feels more noticeable with a movie like Wicked because it’s such a big release that even people who don’t usually go to the theater came to see it.

I'll admit I was guilty of taking a photo during the middle of Wicked p1. To my defense, ever since the Super Bowl teaser I've wanted to make a replica of the invitation Elphaba receives to the palace in Emerald City and in every teaser trailer commercial featurette it's been featured since, it has been different from the last. Colors, words, design altered.. And plus we only seen the top half. It drove me nuts to the point I had to take a screenshot of the final film to get it right and see the whole thing 😂. I'll add it was a matinee and they were like 10 people in the theater and promptly put my phone away. Luckily no one sang the entire time except a 6 year old girl for two lines in a song

Movie theatres and actual theatres are an escape. Put your phone away, shut the fuck up and just enjoy escaping from life for 2-3 hours. People don't always need to know what we do in our lives. My wicked experience was great to be fair, in a full screening. I'm in the UK where we can get a yearly pass and then pay £3-£5 to upgrade to recliners and dolby atmos/IMAX. These tickets tend to be £13-£20 for somebody without a pass, so you tend to find only people who really want to watch the film go.

I firmly believe theater etiquette has gotten so bad since COVID happened due to being glued to social media all the time or just watching movies at home in the background. People's attention spans have gotten so bad and short that the moment they get bored they reach for the phone. It's like they can't fathom sitting through slower parts of a film or having to pay attention to something for more than 10 seconds.
