When I went to see Wicked, somebody in the row behind me opened up their phone and starting watching TikToks. OUT LOUD. It only lasted for like two minutes, but I just simply can’t fathom why anyone would think that would be ok??

It is NOT the musical theater people. Musical theater people are used to no photos, no talking, not showing up late, not being able to eat or drink in a theater. Musical Theater fans know theater etiquette.

the theatre kids r fine for photos but the singing got on my nerves so bad… like i came here to watch professional actors and singers perform not to see some random middle schoolers botch the defying gravity high note

@skyofbob I agree that people should not be singing unless it's specifically a sing-along screening. It's extremely discourteous to all the other people in the audience. I'm just saying the musical theater people are not the ones doing that. Musical theater audiences are accustomed to sitting quietly and respectfully to watch performers perform. The rowdy crowd are not the musical theater-goers.

I think people shouldn’t have their phones out during a movie at all unless it’s an emergency in which you go out into the hall to take a call. Not everything has to be a constant shared experience.

You might not be aggressive about this, but I will be. People who take photos during a movie are far too worried with about what people will think about them. They feel like they need to be a part of the zeitgeist, and it’s kinda pathetic

@quacksayssquawk2899 I also hate people singing during concerts except for if it's encouraged by the band. I remember going to an Andrew Bird concert and it was a really excellent performance, but there was a woman seated directly behind me singing along out of tune to every single song for the full two hour concert. It ruined the whole thing and I wanted to blow my brains out.

I’ve seen Wicked 4 times now and on the most recent watch I took my first ever photo in a theater. I waited for the title card at the end of the movie before the credits once people were walking out- it was an early show with a lot of families who left immediately. The only person still lingering when I took the picture was doing the same exact thing. On principle it’s probably not something I’d do at the theater again, but there are definitely situations where it’s not inherently offensive.

i recently went to the movies at a cheap theatre in a city I don't live in. There were people in front of me watching reels at high volume for like 10 minutes. And behind me were a couple that were snuggling and yapping for half an hour about their uni friends and their relationships. It was SO out of line. I feel like taking a photo of the title card is still just mildly annoying in the grand scheme of the bullshit people get up to in movie theatres. I had another similar experience when I watched Dune : Part 2 in theatres with some teenagers having inappropriately loud conversations behind me and taking pictures every 10 minutes.

I go to Alamo a lot because my roommates work there (I absolutely wouldn’t go if I had to pay for food) but the vibe there definitely depends on the location. there’s two in the city with one having actual normal sized theaters and that one I hate but the other is quaint and small with only about 20 seats per theater and I think the Alamo experience is much better suited to that kind of smaller format

I saw Zone of Interest at an Alamo Drafthouse and have never been more distracted during a theater experience. Waiters were scurrying by every 3 minutes! Definitely appreciate what they’re trying to do but feel they should encourage ordering during trailers and have a strict cut off time. Arrive early if you want food.

This is how people watch movies these days-they treat the film, which they’ve paid a significant amount of money to see, as a second screen. When I went to see Wicked, the three girls in front of me were on their phones the entire time-reading messages, browsing, completely disengaged. I think it feels more noticeable with a movie like Wicked because it’s such a big release that even people who don’t usually go to the theater came to see it.

I'll admit I was guilty of taking a photo during the middle of Wicked p1. To my defense, ever since the Super Bowl teaser I've wanted to make a replica of the invitation Elphaba receives to the palace in Emerald City and in every teaser trailer commercial featurette it's been featured since, it has been different from the last. Colors, words, design altered.. And plus we only seen the top half. It drove me nuts to the point I had to take a screenshot of the final film to get it right and see the whole thing 😂. I'll add it was a matinee and they were like 10 people in the theater and promptly put my phone away. Luckily no one sang the entire time except a 6 year old girl for two lines in a song

Something to combat this would just be some sort of special screen before the movie starts with the poster and what movie you're about to see, maybe a countdown until when ads start or something! They can throw on some snack advertisement on it as well if they so desire lmao. I love the idea of taking a quick snap for my IG story of what I'm about to see because I treat it as a sort of online diary. But I obviously don't want to do it *while* watching it and I hate when others do it 😭

Movie theatres and actual theatres are an escape. Put your phone away, shut the fuck up and just enjoy escaping from life for 2-3 hours. People don't always need to know what we do in our lives. My wicked experience was great to be fair, in a full screening. I'm in the UK where we can get a yearly pass and then pay £3-£5 to upgrade to recliners and dolby atmos/IMAX. These tickets tend to be £13-£20 for somebody without a pass, so you tend to find only people who really want to watch the film go.

I freakin HATE people that are constantly on their phones, check their phones, or talk/comment during a movie. You can sit still for 2-3 hours or not look at your phone? I firmly believe theater etiquette has gotten so bad since COVID happened due to being glued to social media all the time or just watching movies at home in the background. People's attention spans have gotten so bad and short that the moment they get bored they reach for the phone. It's like they can't fathom sitting through slower parts of a film or having to pay attention to something for more than 10 seconds.

I like to take a photo, without flash, of the opening title whenever I go to the cinema. To post on my IG story. I usually do it incognito because I’m usually sitting by myself in the back row, with no one around, I’ll sort of hide the camera behind my leg, not above my head like I’m Austin Powers in the Spy Who Shagged me saying “oh yea babbyyyy” out loud. As long as you’re chill about it, I see nothing wrong with it.

listen, we appreciate your consideration for being as discreet as possible, but i really hate to tell you, nobody on ur ig cares. everyone who sees it that would care about movies would think to themselves that you disrupted a movie to take a picture in order to let people know you’re seeing a wide release movie. even if you were discreet taking the picture, it does not look that way on insta. take a picture of the poster, or better yet, wait till the credits and take a picture of the final title screen.

I swear to god I went to see Oddity last summer. There was a husband and his wife in front of me. from where I understand the situation is her housekeeper kept calling her and they talked for 2 mins. next thing she kept looking at her photo of her child Injured himself where there is a scratch in his chest. she keeps showing the picture to her husband and throughout the whole runtime of the movie she keeps looking at picture zooming in the scratch. to point where I begin to question myself what film did I bought ticket for again ??

you should speak up and tell your friends that take pictures during title cards to stop. nobody who sees that when the post thinks that it’s cool because they know they disturbed the screening when they did it, and they’re disturbing the screening. even if you keep it close to your chest, it still lights up behind and distracts the people around you. people that don’t speak up when people are being disruptive are just as complicit to the downfall of theatre etiquette.

I was a bit confused too, but then I remembered Americans also have Thanksgiving. edit: and it's tomorrow/day after tomorrow depending on your time zone, so it checks out lol

@Apethantos Oh true that makes sense. What even is Thanksgiving? It's strange that noone here in Europe celebrates it

I personally only take a picture of the title (before the actual film starts) where it shows the age rating and content warnings (flashing lights, language, etc) thats it lol, phone out in the film is just annoying

You should come to a Bulgarian festival to just lose all hope. Went to 10 movies at 2 different festivals in November, 9 out of 10 times people just destroyed the entire experience with talking and phones.

Even in a theatre for a play if someone takes out their phone that’s very disrespectful
