i love how you can kinda tell which kanji the old hiragana came from け looks like the 計 in 時計 とけい (clock) す looks like 寸 すん (and old measurement, ~3cm) ち looks like the left side of the 知 in 知恵 ちえ (wisdom) if you squint hard enough, り sorta looks like the 理 in 理由 (reason) i love stuff like this

From what I have found, it appears that Japanese was traditionally written with brushes. It seems like the flush are to mimic the look of a brush. This is of course calligraphy, so it makes sense.
