This video helps me a lot! Basically, these are the Japanese letters of the alphabet, but they are different sounds. For example, if you see one of the letters that make an "e" sound (which shows it in a translator for example), then it will be an A in English even though that Japanese letter makes an "e" sound. I've always thought it's slightly strange that there's a ティ construction for the "ti" sound to separate it from "chi", but not a セィ construction (or similar) for a "si" sound separate from "shi".

Yes you're right. Actually not only in Japanese, in other languages too. Often makes us ask. Maybe this depends on the policies of each country.

Those are the American English pronounciation of the Alphabet though. In Latin languages, specially Brazilian Portuguese, a Japanese native would have a better pronounciation by default as "AEIOU" and「あえいおう」are equivalent.

This is not American English, you can tell by Z being ゼット which is zet/zed, Americans do not pronounce it that way.

@@sakuraramen As a native speaker of British English, I can confirm that almost all of these letter names were pronounced how I would expect a Japanese person to render the British English pronunciations. The surprises were: 1. ディ rather than ディー; 2. アール rather than アー; 3. That "w" came out as something quite odd! 4. ゼット rather than ゼッド. To comment on the letter "r", I think most speakers of British English pronounce the name of this letter like "ah". In the most widely prevalent accents, "r" is not pronounced after a vowel unless there is another vowel following it either in the same word or at the beginning of the following word. In British English, "z" is "zed", but what Mr. Takumi has given us here appears to be a Japanese version of "zet". Then again, this might be due to a rule I vaguely remember hearing about by which speakers of Japanese avoid having more than one voiced consonant in the same morpheme, or something along those lines.

@@omp199 I believe most of the patterns come from British English as well, however we should take in consideration that the first contact with alphabet of Japanese people was centuries ago, and the interpretation of alphabet pronunciation of Japanese that time plus the way it was pronounced that time make things a little bit more complicated.
