🏅 Tales from Drag Challenge: Sanchez the Barra Commodore

Warick and John entered this year's Street Machine Drag Challenge in a seriously bland looking VP Commodore. Much to our surprise, hidden under its bonnet was a very tidy, 472hp Barra turbo.
We caught up with the guys on the last day of the event just before they went out and run a PB.

I would love to throw one of those Barra 4.0's in my old fox body mustang I got behind my house. I wonder how hard and how much it would cost to get one sent to the USA? can a 4r70w bolt on a barra, I thinkin read somewhere you can make 500+ with the sbe. I'm gonna look into it that old car might like havin a Ford back between the fenders lol

Did they have to fit the engine in crooked like it is for fitment issues with the one side or just badly fitted into the car?

Such a shame we can't get the barra in the UK. Would love to stick one in a mk5 cortina estate. Used to have one many moons ago. Now im older and wiser would live to barra one and have as a daily driver. And of course with a haltech.

If ya pull off getting a barra to the UK and can find a worthy shell to drop it in, MOT aside. It will be a great sleeper :-) Good luck finding parts at Halfords haha, shame Repco hasn't branched into UK.

They are not available in the States. The factory cranks are no good tho, you gotta get a custom crank made if you want to spin it hard like an RB or JZ. That's the part all these Ford boys won't tell you and are in denial about

Can't really agree with you there dude. Definitely correct in the fact they don't spin as hard as an RB or a JZ, but when they are twice the size (or close to it) it doesn't matter. Seen them time and time again push massive numbers, i've had 7, all bar one moderately to heavily modified (talking 450rwhp up to over 700rwhp, built motor etc) with stock crank (on an FG turbo motor) and never had an issue myself or seen any of the 10's of mates i have with high powered barra's run into any dramas. @h p - Company called Atomic make custom built barra's, i'm sure they'd ship to the states for a price. Otherwise try to find one online. Plenty of them around, and there's always built motor rebuild kits on ebay and stuff. They are a great motor, strong, reliable, and can pump out a heap stock. With Valve springs alone they can handle most things you'd ever want to throw at them (if it's a late BF motor or an FG, BA motors were held together with elastic bands unfortunately hahaha)

RB20's are only 1 L smaller and can spin to 10000 RPM on the factory crank... Try that with a Barra and see what happens. Running 10's with RB30's is a piece of cake. My daily runs mid 10's on only 20psi. At 40, on E85 it runs mid 9's

RB30's* .... I know mate..... that's exactly what i said.... haha. The advantage of a Barra, while it might not spin as fast you can pull mid 10's without throwing it up to 20+ psi. with valve springs and bolt on's alone you can pull into the 10's, some into the 9's. Show me an RB pulling 9's or getting close to 1000hp without pushing 30+ psi, it doesn't really happen. They are both great engines dude, and use quality internals to be able to handle lots of power. I've seen a few Skylines running Barra's. Don't think i've ever seen a falcon with an RB in it... But like i said, both great engines. Use similar principles, just different.

Why the hell did you bother with a Dunnydore. Put the Ford engine in say a XF or E series. A VP these days is not much more than scrap. Or just fit a factory plastic engine which can be made to do 11s easily though a LS is still the best way.

LDN Wholesale , v8 = 2 turbos, = 2 exhausts, = 2 conplex. I6 is much simpler.
