from my experience working in the area: -very toxic managers and supervisors who constantly treat workers like garbage and will even make up bad stories to tell the higher-ups if they just don't like you. -constant pressure to force workers into overtime(90% of cases unpaid) every single day. -inhuman working pace demands. -calls on off days, sometimes even in the middle of vacation to go to work. -atempts to convince workers to cut their lunch time into the bare minimum to do more work. -last minute schedule changes.

I have a job at Walmart and I can honestly say it's not that bad. You can't go in to a job like that not expecting to be treated like an employee who works for hardly any money. You're right, you are expendable. Because your at the bottom of the company totem pole. Don't like it? Work your way up the chain or get out of the job. You're not there to be treated like a human, you're there to work and get your paycheck every two weeks like everyone else. The most important thing, don't go into these type of jobs expecting to be able to support yourself. These jobs are for college kids who are broke as fuck in the first place, not full grown adults living with a family.

Working retail during the pandemic when my brother had cancer ruined me. It made me realize people simply did not care about my health, as the person serving them. More than once, certain customers were more than happy to try and spit on me, I had customers literally trying to assault me and I was expected to keep a smile on my face the whole time.
@BeastKing0010 күн бұрын
Similar experiences. Once had someone try to ram me into a dumpster with their car. Once had someone threaten to kill me because we didn't have the generator he wanted in stock. Once had somebody dump gasoline down a storm drain in front of God and everybody because he was upset he couldn't get a return without draining the gas from the generator (not the same guy)(also customers turned him in before I could pick up the phone, he was slammed with a substantial, life-altering fine for that one). A guy showed a female cashier a picture of his penis and then tried to lie about it. He was waiting for her in the parking lot, but he didn't expect me to be there to drive her home (she usually walked). One guy tried to hijack my cashier because he was tired of waiting in line and thought I was going too slowly which ended up fucking up his transaction, making it take even longer to get that worked out. I told him to look at the screen, at what he had done. I berated him like an unruly child in front of the whole store. It was righteous, but he didn't say a word, just stared at the ground. Moral of all these stories is this: these are maladjusted adults who mistreat you. A write-up is a piece of fucking paper. Management has less control over you than you think. Speak up for yourself when you need to. Don't let your equals treat you as less.

My initial experience with retail was actually positive. I had little to no social skills prior to working the register and learning I could talk to complete strangers and not fumble the ball completely gave me more confidence than I’d ever had before. The first year- I put everything I had in to that job, I liked working hard and feeling useful and appreciated. But the day of my review, the illusion was shattered. I thought I would get rewarded for putting my all in to the job every day. But I was given the same raise as the people who barely bothered to show up. The biggest lesson retail taught me is to never give your all to a job, because your employer will never return the favor. And don’t worry about measuring up to someone’s standards because the more you give the more they expect. It feeds on your spirt until you have nothing left.

I’m still scarred from this time at my first job where there was an extremely long line. I was under a lot of pressure as the only cashier in the thruway stop that day (and being new to the job) and I find it hard to do basic calculations when under a lot of stress. The older man I was cashing out saw me struggling, so he found it in his right to tightly grab my hand with anger, manually making me count the change as he said “Kids these days can’t even count change. Here, we’ve got a nickel and that’s 5 cents-“ and so on and so forth, only letting go of my hand when he stopped counting. I had never felt so publicly humiliated in my life. Retail is horrible.

I feel you. One day the system that we use to pay with debit cards wasn't working (it's sadly somewhat normal in my country). And when that happens people get INTENSE and extremely annoying because they look at us like it's the employees fault (cash it's worthless and hard to find due to hyperinflation) I work at a gift shop. An old man was looking for a gift bag and I told him "Sir the bank system it's not work-" and he literally interrupted and screamed at me "I'M NOT LOOKING FOR THAT" and then, just like you, I was busy with multiple people, he payed in cash so the pressure was afecting me and he said something like "You didn't go to school or what?" I worked in a bar for 3 years and I can say that retail and hospitality are the absolute worst jobs in modern society.
@qty13155 жыл бұрын
I think the worst part about retail is that if you ever complain about your job to anyone except retail employees, they act like you have no right to complain. A comment that sticks out is some guy who said "You think that's bad! Wait until you get a real job." Well, it's an easy job admittedly, but the severe mental toll it takes is incredible. Even when you're not working, the social stigma against retail workers, the low wages and the lack of time to unwind still takes a harsh toll. In 'real' jobs, you get days off, you don't face a social stigma, and you make enough to pay your bills and possibly retire early. That's what I really wish that people would understand.
@pupp9935 жыл бұрын
@@qty1315 yeah. Retail and hospitality are not technical jobs. But there is significant mental stress caused by high pressure and customers frequently treating you like shit. Im a English as a Foreign Language teacher now and it is a harder job but miles less stressful.
@qty13155 жыл бұрын
@@pupp993 I worked as a contractor for a while. It wasn't easy, but what made it much more tolerable than in retail was that you got regular breaks and could pace yourself a bit. You had a job to do, like installing an electrical outlet, but you could do it in 20 minutes or 40 minutes, as long as you did a good job you could finish quickly and leave early, or do it slowly and leave later. You got paid the same amount either way. In retail and fast food, that was not the case. If you were told to do a job, you had to do it then and there, then you had to do another job, and another, and another, all the while a manager might be scrutinizing your every move or a customer is demanding that you finish your job as quickly as possible. Looking back, I think the problem was a lack of structure. You're paid to be there for 8 hours, but you don't really have 8 hours worth of assigned tasks, so you're assigned more tasks as you work. You know what's funny? The reason why my parents didn't understand why fast food and retail was so stressful is because these kinds of policies and social stigmas in retail are actually fairly new things. You can see pictures of family men making decent wages working in fast food in the 70s/80s. In some of these older people's minds, they associate retail/fast-food now as what it was when they were a teenager working their first job in a comparatively good environment. That just isn't the case anymore, and I'm not 100% sure why.
@pupp9935 жыл бұрын
@@qty1315 the main issue is that due to the way the jobs market has be ome structured and there is a huge job deficit. These jobs used to be a handful of fulltimers whos job was the actual running of the business while partime students did most of the busywork. However due to things like wage inflation and a job deficit have forced what were essentially pocket money jobs for kids into dead end careers with fulltime hours. Corporate culture and office poletics also impact this as they've structured around anyone short of a salary worker being a low investment and a replacable drone. I'm pretty sure some of the shit I've put up with working at a bar will be the biggest bullshit I'll ever have to deal with from a profession. Seemingly normal people will legit snap and try to glass you if you refuse service or they dont want to pay £1.50 (about $2 in the states) for a vodka coke. Customers are wretched and between them and the looming threat thst your boss will fire you, sometimes over the most petty reasons makes retail and hospitality the worst industry to work in.

@@pupp993 Lol, I bet that working in a bar was bad. I worked at a college in a restaurant that was very close to a bar and about 3 frat houses. I absolutely agree that retail makes you a bitter person. I’ve worked several different retail jobs now and have a total of 7 years altogether. @deeptisoni4167 Жыл бұрын
Why does it make you bitter. ?
@katieb9428 Жыл бұрын
@@deeptisoni4167 Many reasons, but here are a few. A lot of people are nasty to Retail workers or are just inconsiderate of all they do. For example something like cleaning the fitting rooms. There’s always a rack to put your things on that you don’t want. Many people leave items in the dressing rooms because “that’s their job to clean the stalls” but the same workers who are in charge of keeping the fitting rooms clean also are in charge of folding down 8 departments on their own and making sure it looks presentable for the next day. Shoppers come rushing to the registers as soon as the closing announcement goes off (even after getting three warnings that the store is closing soon) with overflowing carts of merchandise and the employees have to stay late just so that one customer can make their transaction. I have personally had it where customers have been outright rude to me and told me to my face that I was ugly and need to get a real job. Someone I work with recently had a return from a customer that was shattered glass. The customer didn’t inform her what the item was and my coworker pulled the item out of the bag. I worked in a Walmart, i was in Cap2 which means in the beginning of the shift unloading products off the trucks onto the pallets and then getting it to the aisles and unboxing and putting them on the shelves. We had 40 seconds per box, and we had to stop what we're doing and address the customer in the ten foot parameter on top of it, and helping the customer didn't negate the box speed quota. Sweaty. No air conditioning. Cuts and torn cuticles and bruises. Exhausted. Tendonitis from ripping boxes open and knee pains that wouldn't go away even when i was clocked out. Covered in rotting alfredo and wet cat food and clear ammonia and lube that busted open in the truck. We had a running joke where one of us would stand in front of someone pulling a heavy pallet and play a game of chicken hoping they'd run into us and killing us. The other would try to swerve or stop because they didn't want to give you the satisfaction of going home early and leave the team understaffed. A legitimate workplace injury was like winning the lottery for us. I once was on my knees putting product on the shelf above the bottom shelf and this old man with a cane wanted to get yams on the bottom shelf so i offered to grab it while i was down there because i noticed he had limited mobility. He said he was good so i went back to stocking and he crouched down next to me, grabbed the yams, AND THEN PROCEEDED TO PUT HIS HAND ON MY BACK AND USE ME AS A PROP TO PULL HIMSELF BACK UP. I once had a man wander up and down the asile making glancing eye contact with me only screaming POTATO until I finally broke and asked him if he was going to address me first before I agreed to help him. One time I clocked out of work and in front of the exit there was a puddle of human piss and I was in such a disassociated state that I simply hopped over it and went home. I've been sexually harassed by supervisors from multiple departments and had managers pull me aside for undermining their authority for calling them out on their bullshit in front of others. A manager tried to make me climb over a 5 foot tall pallet of dog food bags to get to boxes on the other side of the truck and asked me to stand on boxes on top of ladders to reach high places and I was reprimanded for noncompliance so I pulled out my phone and filed a complaint with OSHA on speaker while looking directly at him. Same manager tried to remind me I was disposable and I told him "so are you so long as you're not fucking the wrong staff." God he hated me. One of my friends filled in the spot when our supervisor left and they let her do a supervisor's job without supervisors pay for 2 months before bringing in a transfer to replace her. She quit that fucking day. One time i was pulling a pallet out of a truck (it was wrapped so it didnt require the roller) and I was so poor i had been wearing the same shoes for almost two years and they were the only ones i could afford at the time but i had worn them down so bad that they were smooth on the bottom. And i slipped, and this nine foot tall pallet that was almost nothing but canned vegetables came rolling down the ramp towards me. I was flat on my back and i sort of shuffled backwards until i was out of the truck and then rolled out of the way until the others came in and stopped the pallet from toppling. Afterwards I got in trouble from my mananger for not having proper footwear. I bought the shoes in the Walmart. One time my supervisor was trasferring and he brought the whole team of about 12 people to a Dennys after hours and we all leaned on the brick wall and passed a joint around and talked about our dreams of going back to school. Buying a house. Persuing passions. And not a single one of us sounded hopeful.

But to do it every day makes you exhausted and hopeless. And they STILL think you’re not doing enough. Very toxic work environment. I tried going to part time so I could secretly look for another job and they just ignored my request. It got so bad I couldn’t handle even one more day - I ended up quitting without a two week notice. I was out of work for a year and living with my parents. But it was still the best decision I’ve ever made. I work in a factory now and it’s been much better. My journey still isn’t over - and neither is yours. Dealing with people on the phone still feels as emotionally exhausting as customer service and I still get stressed out but my staff and coaches are far more encouraging, I get acknowledged for my work when I do a good job. We have a dental plan and holiday pay, I've never had those things my whole life and I'm 29 now. Tbh honest the only thing I genuinely miss from Cap2 was our comradery. Our performance evaluations didn't give any of us special treatments and there was very little room for "upward mobility" so there was no competitive edge. We were in this bullshit together and a lot of us would help pick up someone else's slack when we could see the others struggling but attempting to do our best simply because we've all been there before. This new job my coworkers are not my friends at all. They're nice but I don't know them, nor do I want to.

The first thing that hit me was low energy from depression. I kept chasing it with sodas and energy drinks. Late nights, weekends, and holidays. No social life really. I smoked and drank on and off and ate junkfood because it was cheap and quick. Too tired from being on my feet all day for 8-16 hours to exercise. Lots of clopens and doubles. There were days id hit the pillow after a double shift to go to my other job in 3 hours. I would dress in my uniform for the next day and put a redbull by my bed to wake up with. Sometimes I had 2 fulltime jobs working 70-80 hours a week. I was not very compassionate when Karen wanted to see the manager.

I quit after like 6.5 months working in retail. It solidified the idea that there is no amount of money that is acceptable if by getting the money, I'm treated like crap. It's made me stop caring so much about what other people think of me. I hope anyone working in retail who has ambitions in life outside of the ratrace gets out of these crappy jobs. There are a handful of people who are kind and understanding, but for the most part, customers and management don't appreciate or empathize with what retail employees go through. And I think it's the way the people who made the system designed it. The system itself is toxic. Free yourself.

I worked at movie theaters from age 16-21. Concessions, box office, ushering, cleaning theaters. Those years really gave me a lot of perspective and also gave me an appreciation for people who work such jobs. This one time a woman ordered nachos. We had 2 sizes, small and large so I asked her which she wanted because she didn't say. She repeats "nachos". I again ask which size. Her son, probably about 10 years old then says to me "she said nachos, it's not hard dumbass!!". No reprimand from the woman, she says "I told you I want NACHOS" with a pissed off look on her face. It took every ounce of willpower to not tell them both off. This type of exchange was commonplace. What retail teaches you is that people are scumbags and it's something that definitely stays with you. But I think it's also a good wakeup call about how the world is. Humans suck more often than not. I used to think the opposite, that the good outnumber the bad but I was very wrong.

Most people ignore the spill-over mindset. My parents both had retail jobs because they were young and stupid and ran away together because fairy tales or something. Having no decent education, they both worked retail for most of my childhood, and my mother in particular would rant and rave: she hated people, she hated the holidays, she hated her life. Now, children's brains are little sponges; they WILL hear you and what you say WILL be internalized. Any and all personal relationships and any holiday became tainted for them because they know the ugly underbelly, which is where where children who act like jaded seventy-year-old war veterans come from. They might be put off socializing for life or feel guilty about looking forward to Christmas, the absolute worst time of the year in their house. Oh, and once those kids are old enough for jobs! Jobs that, from what they have observed, literally consists of your boss getting off to strangers physically beating you and threatening that they know where you live and will slaughter your family like dogs. People don't want to work? No, they don't want to be held at gunpoint and have their loved-ones lives threatened over a frozen pizza.

I worked as a cashier almost two years ago and absolutely hated it. I remember one of my worst days - I was just about to clock out and it was at the busiest time. A lady and her friend came through with two carts loaded up with Tide and wanted to use 24 coupons for it, but our store had a policy that you can only use so many coupons per purchase. I explained that to them, but the one lady wasn’t having it. She started cursing and yelling, making a big scene while customers lined up behind her. I kept apologizing and trying to explain, finally she yelled that she wanted to speak to the manager. He came over and angrily explained that we couldn’t accept that many coupons, but he got tired of arguing and said ”fine, just give it to her, I’m going to lunch.” So I rang up all the coupons (which I had to do manually for the majority) and then I tell her her total (which was significantly small after all the coupons). Except this time she tells me she has two more coupons on her phone to be scanned and they’re both worth $25, which would have made the total cost nothing for the two carts full of Tide. The coupons were also completely bogus, and the machine wouldn’t even recognize the barcodes, and I can’t manually enter in such a large amount. I told her I couldn’t take those coupons, so she screamed and cursed at me again, and left both her carts of Tide in my check lane so she could go complain about me to customer service. Her friend apologized to me though, which I appreciated. I moved the carts out of the check lane so other people could move through and then clocked out as fast as I could (the whole ordeal lasted about 20 minutes after I had to clock out). I remember feeling so defeated after that, and I dreaded going in to work. Luckily I quit a few months after that and have now moved on to a much better job!

My co-workers and I recently got laid off from our customer service job. It's been a blessing in disguise for me. Autism and customer service just doesn't mix well. I'm going to take a break and look for different opportunities 😀

I am autistic and this is so true. Only lasted 3 months as a courtesy clerk because the social aspect was too much to handle, not only on the customer front but with the managers. I'm not a fast guy and in such a hectic environment I was a fish out of water.

I have worked in retail for over 15 years, and it is just like you describe it. I don't regret it because this job paid for my mother's house, supported my wife when she needed and got me through school, but I am done. I was curious about office life because that is where I am heading, and I am happy to hear that the grass is greener on the other side. I am so happy to have outgrown my retail job, and I will never be the same after it. I am sure I will have habits that will be hard to let go of for the rest of my life. Thank you for sharing your experiences through your videos, and wish me luck in my new endeavors.

My motto for literally all retail positions: Just do what you can! Don't sweat the small stuff. I know that's easier said than done and cam be ESPECIALLY hard if you work with some dickheads, but keeping that in mind has at least helped me compartmentalize it and not bring it home with me. Some days I'd be at the register ALL DAY and not get to do anything else during my entire shift and you know what? That's OK. Because I'm one person. Also don't overwork yourself, EVER. And try to figure out ways of doing things that make it easier/more efficient for you. After working somewhere for a while, that kinda comes naturally so don't sweat it if it doesn't come right away. Last but most definitely not least: have something else to look forward to outside of work. I have my own activities that I can do that personally help me recharge. And if you have to, have a separate category of stuff you like to do that require minimal effort for those days that are SUPER draining.

This is good advice. I feel like it's important to have a life outside the job so that way you won't have to constantly think about your job on your days off

I've been told by more than one retail store clerk that they can tell who has worked in retail and who hasn't. I got burnt out from retail and the shift works sucks! I'm an introvert and I had to be an extrovert and it took a lot out of me! I was so drained I had no energy to do anything! I would wake up and dread going to work and hate my life and feel like I was dying more inside with the passing of each day!

I enjoy this comment. Absolutely we can tell who has worked retail. The lady who called me a retard for laying her pie at 1 degree angle has never worked retail a day in her life. The guy who him and even his son helped me bag their order knows what it’s like to work retail. Those are both real things that happened to me. One makes you wanna stoop to their level of depravity and make them hurt the way you do. The other makes you wanna roll out the red carpet because meeting a good person while working retail is more difficult than figuring out who Jack the Ripper was.

You are speaking straight facts! I work three retail jobs. But guess what? I just walked out of all three. That’s how terrible I get treated. Not by all, but I’ve just had ENOUGH! I’m not getting ready to go out and try and find a new job cause I’m broke and have bills to pay. Does anyone else feel me??

I needed to see this. I got a new job recently, and today an old man told me I needed to go back to school because I was new. I lost my previous job because the manager viewed me as an aset, not a person. I want to draw RWBY comics when I come home. I come home exhausted. My parents tell me it's normal, but... This is not life. This is sickness. This is not how human beings should live.

I wholeheartedly agree. We aren't meant to be pushed into exhaustion every fucking day for minimum wage. We are meant to live, not barely survive.
@nickthepick80433 жыл бұрын
@@BlakeGeometrio I agree. It's been two years since I made that comment, but it still is in effect. There was a documentary I watched called "Where to Invade Next". In that film, I learned that countries in the UK have a better work system than we do. People there work less, but get payed enough to live and be happy. On top of that, their countries are some of the most productive in the world because their employers and governments know that people need to be rested in order to work well. Seriously, that documentary showed me that all hope is not lost if other countries have more morality than ours does.

Agreed. Pushing carts ain’t too hard, I’m strong. But it’s a little annoying when I have to push carts for 3 because new baggers aren’t trained to work together. Not exaggerating, with new baggers, teamwork is actually discouraged. It’s hellish. I’d say it’s completely unfair to me if I wasn’t an absolute goddamn cart pushing machine. For serious, the new guys can’t finish one cart coral by themselves. Cuz they know I’ll do it. Yeah it pisses me off, but it saves me from having to interact with customers. But it’s also the south and it’s summer. It’s a win lose situation where I mostly lose.

Working in retail 20 years has turned me into a total miserable asshole. I just can't stand people anymore. My faith in humanity is so low now. I was unhappy before but never this bad. With me it's fellow employees that piss me off.

There has to be more to life than job swapping from menial job to menial job. Im an introvert like you so elecrical work sounds interesting, I might have to check it out bro.

@@george.r bro people are hiring everywhere. Nah man I’m leaving end of March. As far as electrical, you can get hired right now as a helper and 2-3 years from now you could be making triple of what you work in retail. I just think of it as are you gonna waste more time than you already have? You can literally change your whole life tomorrow if you wanted to. You’ll never know what’s out there until you get out there. These employers are waiting for you and there’s plenty of good money to go around. It’s yours bro, claim it.

Customer service jobs have taught me the difference between being kind and nice. Someone being nice doesnt last long, give them a little reason to be upset they'll crush you. Kind people are compassionate towards you no matter how shitty their day has been theyre the ones that will take the time to cheer you up because they know youve had a day already and its only been an hour.

Most retail/customer service jobs are legitimately traumatic. An unspoken requirememt of most of those jobs is that for your shift you become a subhuman punching bag that is socially acceptable to be mistreated. People don't generally have servants to abuse anymore, so they take it out on service workers instead.

I worked at walmart for 2 years and its definitely shitty place to work. The harder you work the more they expect and they are never appreciative of your work. At some points ive had the employees of retail preemptively get aggressive. Like ill ask for assistance and they'll accuse me of being an asshole. One time after waiting 45 mins to get some duster i just reminded then employee to not forget me. My exact words "hey ive been waiting awhile i just wanted to make sure you haven't forgotten me" and the lady went off on me in front a line of customers and even got them involved insulting my integrity. I was so embarrassed but i also understood why she did that.
