Absolutely. I've been a DP fan since the release of "In Rock" in 1970. This unique history has finally been presented by non other than the Chief himself.

As a bassist you gotta love Ian for how precise and steady he holds any groove he's given. With Roger it's the same thing ! Not easy to play "Black Night" or "Highway Star" all through !

The first Purple managers were Ron Hire, Tony Edwards and John Coletta, hence HEC Enterprises Ltd, a name early fans remember on all the 33 1/3 vinyl labels on early and later Mk II & III Purple records. There’s clearly a chequered history with them, including between Coverdale and Coletta into the early Whitesnake era until 1982. The only one who appeared to be held in any regard was Tony Edwards, who went on to manage Toyah Wilcox and set up a successful record label doing official releases of West End musical shows. When Purple reformed in 1984, they engaged Rainbow manager, Bruce Payne through Thames Talent. He was also involved with the band in the 1970s.
@grobbler1
@grobbler1 3 жыл бұрын
Gillan and Glover were fairly scornful of Coletta and Edwards in interviews. Probably due to their treatment as 'the new boys' and Gillan was also quite suspicious of the money situation. A 'muddy pool' I think he called it. Ron Hire was apparently imprisoned for VAT fraud as he went out of the picture fairly quickly. Colin Hart's book seems to suggest that Payne was effectively managing Purple towards the end in the 70's, as the group seemed to think Coletta and Edwards were never around. Payne is no longer managing Purple, which only came to light when Whoosh! was released and management shown on the cover was by Matthew Clark.
@ovaisnaqvi1965
@ovaisnaqvi1965 3 жыл бұрын
@@grobbler1 good stuff. Yes, Bruce Payne may have retired. Then there’s the whole Deep Purple Overseas Limited and HEC Enterprises fraud case of a couple of years ago. They seem to have lost £2M+ or so just there....Matthew Clark is listed at SIRCL Limited as a “Royalties Consultant” and looks like an accountant as opposed to a band manager. I suspect they’ve looked at a whole area of their royalties and brought in a specialist to administer it all. Sounds like they want to straighten some stuff out.

It's amazing to listen to that kind of stories! I have been a huge fan of DP since the release of The Battle Rages On - to say I was impressed would be an understatement. At that time I was 9 or 10 years old and even today I find your drumming in A Twist In A Tale something truly amazing and I couldn't (and still can't) figure out how can you do this fast thing on a snare drum :-) I am not too sure what would be the best way to contact you, but I would like to ask a question and would be delighted if I could have even a very short answer. Do you ever listen to Russian classical music or do you find it inspiring? All the best to you, Ian!

So here's my take on the whole Roundabout thing, Chris Curtis' vision always seems to me to be told in a casual, almost laughable manner as though the whole idea was overly influenced by late sixties psychedelia and the surrounding drug culture of the time. However, let's be honest about it, Deep Purple DID become something of a Roundabout over the next half century or so with various musicians jumping on and off and sometimes back on again. So, perhaps the idea wasn't quite as zany as it first appeared to be.

Ian, thank you for your Story. I was 15, when i saw in our local 'Schallplattenladen, in my litte Hometown, close to Hamburg the Cover of DEEP PURPLE IN ROCK. Your Music was like a Hammer! But i was only one Time in a DEEP PURPLE Konzert. 2012 in the Hamburg Arena. And it's so funny, to see a Arena full of old, fat, hairless Men, singing happy as it could SMOKE ON the WATER! LOL Thank you for the Music of my Life! Be careful in this awful Times Ben
