Welcome To Survival-Russia. One of the very best Outdoors and Survival related communities on KZbin, and yes, It's a pretty good Channel too.
My name is Lars. I'm From Denmark but I live in Rural Russia now. I live at a Homestead in wild nature surrounded by a huge forest.
On The Survival-Russia channel we do all things related to the Outdoors Lifestyle. I share my thoughts and experiences on Survival Techniques for the woodlands of the Northern Hemisphere. the Reality of Survival. I share Techniques and ways of the Siberian Tribesmen and the Russian Longhunters of the older days. Things not shown outside of Russia very much.
On this Channel we also do Off-Road driving, Vehicle builds, Metal Detecting, all things Outdoors basically. Enjoy!

Back in '99., when NATO bombed us in Serbia, we used similar things. Since the good guys bombed the power grid and we had frequent power outs, we had to find a way to have lights. Use those cans (we used jars at home, with a hole in the lid) but close the lid and put the cloth through the hole in the lid. Weave the cloth to make a wick. Fill the can with oil, and make sure you have the cloth soaked in the oil in the can. Lite only the cloth that is on the dry side of the lid. It will act as a wick, and it will last a lot longer that those open cans. We used sunflower oil, but if you use citronella oil, you will definitely turn those mosquitoes away.

You must be so proud of your baby girl and knowing she wants to be out with her dad camping out in the forest and riding around on her bike. The rags saturated in oil is an old idea as my grandparents used it when I was growing up to keep mosquitoes away from the front porch area. I worked perfectly and we used it regularly.

Hi Lars ! Greetings from Québec where it's +30 c in the summer and -35 c with 5 feet of snow in the winter! I have been using this torch system for winter sliding. I'm lucky to have a mountain on my land and the sliding path is approx 1500 feet long with a 30 degree slope for a max speed of 60 kmh !! I use 4 liter steel paint containers and fill it with clothes +2 liters of diesel that last around 5 hours of burning time. I space them apart about 75 feet so theres a blind dark spot between each of them ....it adds to the adrenaline! And after much testing, we have found out that lots of rhum gives us night vision!!! Your channel is really, really truly awesome!! I'm aware of the amount of work, time and investment that you put in Survival Russia. It is very much appreciated!!

Hey Lars, this video is so interesting on many levels. I've always wondered a little bit how they used to make those torches they held overhead when marching down the village streets in the old Frankenstein movies. From a practical standpoint, also useful to know how to make them for camp or other emergency lighting. Or even heat or cooking. The construction is amazingly simple, as is the operation. Historically, such torches were the precursors to other more advanced lighting devices: kerosene lanterns for example, or even the later kerosene mantle lanterns which are much brighter. Very nostalgic to see them burning away in the wilderness on waste oil that otherwise may just have been discarded. Instead, it's giving a happy glow and human comfort. All good, thanks!

Diesel in a can with something for a wick works well, too. Not sure if Bio-diesel is ecologically correct nowadays to burn, but back in the cold winters of the 1960's in the UK we often used an old paint can filled with sand and topped up with diesel and something for a wick to warm our hands by and give some light at the end of the day when working at hieght in construction. I guess that all oils will burn if you have a wick and a container, and for us, the sand was only there to stop the diesel sloshing around over the wick and/or spilling out of the container. I was told that these fires/lights had been used in the desert by tank crews during WW11, and it is amazing how just a small flicker of light and warmth makes a difference to how you feel. The smoke is also good for the mosquito problem, if you can keep down wind of it or below its stench.

I like the use of ATF oil in the can trick for lighting up camp at night. My method is to use canola oil as the smell is great and totally biodegradable. I use canola oil in my chainsaw bar. The stuff works just grand. And the cost is so reasonable compared to dinosaur oil for sure. Nice camping with the family too. VF

This works with natural fiber rope or bailers twine and diesel fuel, kerosene, lamp oil, distillate or bunker fuel. You can also make a hand torch by wrapping bailers twine around a 50cm stick and soak the end for 15 or so seconds in the previously mentioned fuel. Let it drip a little then light it. just dont carry a hand torch completely vertical incase fuel drips.
