So many things to squeeze in with less than 8 minutes, but one big exclusion when naming big stars who wrestled for Houston Wrestling was Jack Brisco, who won the NWA Championship from Harley Race in Houston (1973). At that time the NWA Championship was considered the most prestigious belt. Brisco would defend it many times in Houston as well.

I got into wrestling late. I was fifteen in 1987 when I finally started watching wrestling on TV. Being in Houston, I naturally watched the WWF Houston Superstars of Wrestling. For those of you not from here, this was a ninety-minute show, because the middle half-hour was matches/highlights from the weekly shows still happening at the Sam Houston Coliseum. Good times.

Great documentary. I completely remember the radio commercial for wrestling in the Houston area. But, when Hulkamania took over in the 80's, all of my friends in Elementary school chased after Rock and wrestling, and decided to forego the classic style of wrestling promotions of yesteryear. It's a bit of a shame, because the classic wrestling was very engulfing and simplistically intense to watch. (very akin to watching a documentary, where it fools the eye into thinking the proceedings were true and not staged). Today's highly produced shows are spectacles, but somehow, the loss of the everyday audience has diminished the experience.

I was at that last show and it was not only sad but boring. The atmosphere was totally different.they had bright lights on during the matches and it was basically quiet unless there was a match going on and even then fans didn't seem really excited.the coliseum was always dark and smoke filled with just the few lights above the ring that gave it that awesome atmosphere. The crowd was always abuzz even during intermission! I Loved when Peter would announce next weeks card: "next Friday night right here in the Sam Houston coliseum you will see the return of.... Abdullah the butcher"!! Or whoever and the crowd would erupt! over the years I've seen just about EVERY big name in person here. I remember asking bockwinkle for an autograph and being turned down! I shook Tony Atlas hand.bob backlund posed for a picture with the wwwf belt just for me.The sheik brought a HUGE snake here one night. I saw Harley defend the NWA title against Brody two weeks in a row! 2nd match in a steel cage! I saw Flair defend the NWA title against Magnum, wahoo, Terry Taylor, Butch Reed! JYD vs Kamala and on and on.great memories.😓

Yes, I remember when it changed too. I was just a little mixed race kid there with his 60+ year old British great grandmother. I used to wander around that place totally unsupervised, and it was great (probably dangerous if you think about it). I think we still went a few times after Vince bought out BOSCH, but it was never the same. In the early 90s we started to go to watch NWA/WCW in the SUMMIT.

Damn, I’m so glad it was Houston wrestling that was my first experience. Between going to live shows and watching it on channel 39 (I even had a tv in my own room) I got to see such a wide variety of talent. Made such a big impact on my life, I still cherish my love for pro wrestling to this day (AEW, NJPW, IMPACT, NWA).

Former Owner and President of the National Wrestling Alliance, Bruce Tharpe, was licencing footage from the Paul Beosch/Houston Wrestling videotape library, and was using it for the NWA Classics On Demand service until earlier this year when William Patrick Corgan (Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins) bought the organisation. I believe Corgan now has the licence to use footage from the promotion's library for his reboot of the NWA.

All the big names would come in to work Houston, everyone saying it was the best payoff, and they got permission from their homebase to do it, much like St. Louis. Just sharing this with all the wrestling. Fans.this was a wonderful time in wrestling the 1970s 80s and all those times before Vince McMahon did what he did.. and yes its first WrestleMania was an extravaganza. But now it's become garbage. They don't have the intimacy. They don't have to grudge matches the excitement that was created by the small wrestling fractions. I'm from Louisiana love Mid-South wrestling. Cowboy Bill Watts was my hero when I was a young child. And he brought great memories I have of those times. And I truly believe they can be recreated. They are not lost. The right team could create a magical time in wrestling again. I hate what I watch now. A matter of fact I don't watch it..
