As a series veteran, and someone who's been researching everything about the mechanics in this game, I am beyond impressed with this video. I even learned something myself. Switching between characters mid boost attack to continue the combo with said character? UGH that's SO SEXY. Awesome video man.

I'm a long time veteran of the series, and I have to say the hardest thing to get used to in all of the Tales games is that you can't just spam inputs. I recommend newer players practice measured, attentive button presses on the smaller enemies early on to train yourself. Great video Alex! As a newcomer, I HIGHLY recommend Shionne over Rinwell for beginner at-range character. Rinwell's magic layering system is actually pretty complex and locks you into animations much longer than Shionne's arts. Also Shionne is the second character you get. Loved this video and this game! I usually only play shorter games, but I'm 70 hours into this one and keep going I'm enjoying it so much, on top of the amazing story.

One additional piece of advice for people struggling with CP; disable resurection arts. These things are extremely costly and life bottles are a lot cheaper than cp recovery items and if you often craft you'll be needing for gald pretty often as the biggest source is the few sidequests and chests that contain gald (fights don't really give much even at higher difficulty)

Really well done video, my man! I'm a Tales veteran and have reached a point in the game where I'm struggling to beat some of the more powerful stuff in mid to late game when some general turn-based strategy with a small amount of button mashing is no longer effective enough! I had forgotten the ability to switch characters in and out from previous Tales games and had basically not even tried Mystic Artes much after previous Tales games made it so hard. Now that I know different ones have different recovery times, I can decide when to safely build up to a nuke or just use a quicker/safer option rather than ignore them entirely...

General tips for those new to the series: as tempting as it can be, do not charge head on to the enemy. Roll your way to their rear and smack the normal attack until enemy in break status then spam those artes! Rinse and repeat. If things gets too spicy for you, know that theres a craftable accessory substat that makes enemy target you less often. Imo, the enemy NEVER target you at all with that . Idk its just me or i just like to smack them from the rear lmao. Im playing in hard mode and doing good at it. Normal mode should be a breeze for newcomers as long as you follow the tips given above. Dodging counts as an action for the purpose of maintaining your attack string, while allowing you to recharge your AG. This is most apparent with casters using the skill that reduces casting time based on combo length, as long as your constantly dodge when your not casting, you’ll retain your short cast times. The big casts that take 2 seconds or so can be dropped back to back with .5 second cast times, and because of this rinwell becomes one of the most powerful characters

One minor thing to point out as a Manual player. while the game auto targets and shifts the camera for you, that does not mean moving forward will stay on target. In Manual control, holding forward while attacking means you might push past your target. To remedy this, don't input a direction when you commit to a combo. Your character will automatically attack in the target's direction if none is inputted. All around good tips, though I might need to watch it twice to digest some of the more technical points.

2:38 Not being able to not cancel artes has always frustrated me. I played both Tales of Arise plus Berseria and it had these problems where i would try to combo the opponent, but then my unfortunate timing happens where the enemy does a super armor attack that i cannot dodge due to no animation cancel which causes me to then take damage or even getting KO'ed.. Still, i do appreciate a well made guide on the game though. Nice job!~ 😇

Here's a tip from someone who played this on the highest difficulty: Make a strategy page which tells your party to do nothing. When certain bosses use big moves at higher difficulties, they have the potential to wipe your party with one or two ticks of damage. I've found that the AI struggles with this concept, and forgets/forgoes dodging at critical moments. If you set up an "always do nothing" page, they will almost always correctly dodge/block correctly. As pointed out in the video, you can adjust strategies to your liking. Higher difficulties demand that you master strategy swapping as well.

Somethings not mentioned fully 1. You need to break an enemies guard to launch them into the air. They recover guard the second the word break disappears 2. The combo counter is based on the enemy not the player. Meaning the combo counter goes up as long as someone is hitting that enemy. This lets you hit 100+ combo easily 3. Combo damage decreases if you repeat the combo. So use a different Art each time when you string combos

This is my first Tales game and I'm coming here as a fan of the Xenoblade Chronicles saga. I love my action based fighting RPG's but I never felt like I actually understood what was going on during battles and was just fluking it along. When I had to fight Dohalim, I managed to win on my 1st attempt, but only because I abused my healing items. So I deliberately kept restarting the fight until I won through skill. It's at this point I came to your video because for me to enjoy this game I want to know and understand what it is that I am doing during the fights and not just button bash and hope for the best. I will take on what you said in this video and hopefully enjoy my battle encounters going forward. Thanks

I though you would've explained the nuance of each character special feature (Scorching attack for alphen, grenade ammunition for shionne, artes stacking for rinwell, awakening for law, guarding with kisara and rod extension for dohalim). It is essential to learn to use these feature when playing each character to maximise their potential and it's also very fun to vary gameplay.

Learned about defensive boost usage and refreshing gauge. Doing great with Alphen, but got to learn them all for arena now. Also liked the emphasis on animation recovery: never had I seen a game so punishing in this aspect that a arte executes when i resurrect, just because the input was before i died.

Huge tales veteran hear. You had a great introductory video but there is a lot of nuances you left out. 1st shinone boost break bonous comes from enimes in the air, which means the enemy doesn't have to be flying type. This means if you break a enemy and luanch them in the air you can use shinones boost when your air combos is about to end.. 2ndly. Breaks and boost breaks make it so artes can fill your gage. When the blue diamond gauge is filled it can be one shooted with a D pad combo. (This is very important for gaining more experience and score.) And should be your fastest strategy to take out enemies. Iron mask break works on enimies on the ground.with the bonous being if the are a downed enemy The strategy you recommend is fine and even I would recomend it for older tales games, however, action economy is much easier to manage now considering you have quick travel and inns are free to replish health and CP. As opposed to old tales games where you needed to manage TP and finances for each dugeon and journey to the next location. So you will actually get better returns on all out fighting sense all out fighting with there artes will keep your opponents from retaliating, keep your combos high, and make it so you can get that sweet insta kill animation. My favorite being supreme alter personally. Lastly I would recomend the fighting style that gives out as many insta kills as possible, it makes gringing faster, you get bonous score, exp. And SP. Also there are skill trees that replenish health and AG based onperfect dodges and critical hits so anytime you can boost your luck I highly recomend it.

Thanks for the additional tips! My goal for the video is to create foundations for folks to understand some of the basics of combat, so I think I’ve done a good job at that! I’ve found that anyone who wants to learn how something works that it’s best to establish the conventions first rather than going into huge detail on the nuances of the gameplay. The hope is to give viewers the push to experiment and learn these nuances on their own, then, if needed, they can look at other more advanced videos to get better at it! I appreciate the time you spend on your comment though and I do hope that others take a look at what you’ve written!

For PC players, if the inability to cancel attack animations frustrates you, there is a mod that allows you cancel arte animations with a dodge, jump, or another arte. It does break the game a bit (for example, some of Alphen's artes can be prematurely cancelled to a Blazing Sword technique if you hold down the button) but you can pull some sick combos with it.
