Do yourself a favour and get the audiobook "the children of Hurin", read by christopher lee. Its literally listening to Saruman himself reading the history of middle earth as if you were atop Orthanc in his dusty little study. Its EPIC.

Indeed! I often find that other narrators cop out on the shriek of "villains." Christopher does no such thing. The way he pivots between restrained and manic is inimitable, especially when he swings into "almighty God No! No! They heard!" That escalation was perfect!

Browsed to find this. Knew that Lee would be worth the effort. Read all the Poe as a child and again and again over the years. A wonderful writer who embraced his shadow and revealed that we all have one long before anyone heard of Freud orJung. A subtle champion of the disinherited and the despised. He was deeply acquainted with cruelty, enjoyed a brief respite of kindness with his young wife who was then taken brutally by poverty and disease. And then he died a painful death! The ultimate triumph his alone, however. None remember his detractors. Whatever were their birthright stature, wealth or faith, the afterlife is his! There’s justice in that and a certain consolation.

Who really needs Freud or Jung? (Well, Jung has the mental breakdown on his side.) Poe, being "old school", knows what any true poet knows: All beautiful music is about a young man in love -- with a dead girl.

Yes, (the late) Mr. Christopher Lee had an eerie talent for the mysterious, the sinister, the Dark Side. Imho he was the very best Dracula ever - and in The Lord Of The Rings he WAS Saruman himself.. He liked to play scary bad guys - though in reality Mr. Lee was a nice and decent British gentleman. The ones playing evil characters in movies - are usually in reality very decent people. Yes, he belongs to the (very honorable) "Triumvirātus of Horror": Boris Karloff, Vincent Price and (last but certainly not least) Christopher Lee ! I'm not sure these three "Masters of the Dark" ever cooperated in one movie - but if they did I'd love to see it. And I'm sure it's a very impressive movie, one you will remember. Especially in your nightmares.. 😜

He was also a very experienced killer. In WW2 he was in the Long Range Desert Group, predecessor of the British SAS, who wreaked absolute havoc on the Nazis in North Africa. When Peter Jackson was giving him directions about Saruman's death, he told him that he screams when he's stabbed in the back. Sir Christopher politely replied that men don't scream when stabbed in the back, they just make a kind of 'ufffff' noise....
@PoptartParasol
@PoptartParasol 2 жыл бұрын
@@FuckYourSelf99 lmao I remember that. Was quite funny actually, how bewildered he was by someone thinking someone would scream immediately after being stabbed in the back... Really, hardly anyone has such an immediate and severe reaction as a scream when they are hurt. The brain needs to actively process what's happening before that happens.

Edgar Allan Poe never wrote "The Raven," he merely claimed it as a kind of 19th-century "identity theft." The poem's premiere was submitted anonymously to "American Review" under the pseudonym "---- Quarles" by the true author, Mathew Franklin Whittier, younger brother of poet John Greenleaf Whittier. Poe, a literary critic writing for the New York "Evening Mirror," seeing the poem in an advance copy of "American Review," scooped Mathew in his own paper by a couple of days. Mathew would have shared a copy of "The Raven" with Poe in 1842, so Poe had a handwritten copy. This enabled him to convince his editor that he had permission to scoop "American Review"--but he mysteriously left the "Mirror" shortly afterwards (suggesting that he may have been fired for lying about it). It is absurd that any editor of a newly-launched monthly literary magazine like the "Review," would have given a daily newspaper this permission. The real author was unable to reveal his identity and hence could not publicly defend himself. My paper, "Evidence that Edgar Allan Poe Stole 'The Raven' from Mathew Franklin Whittier," is downloadable at the following link. It can also be found by that title on Academia.edu. www.ial.goldthread.com/MFW_The_Raven.pdf
