I think an important part of restoring the balance, as Shen speaks of it, is not just in planting the sapling and restoring life to the forest for the life that was taken from it. The boy's selfish act was also balanced out by Akali's selfless defense of the child. You could definitely argue that it's for the drama. That it's just how it panned out, saplings take time to grow, etc. etc. - but the sprout was not a smol boi. That was a full twig in like a second - and it only started to grow after Akali's (attempted) self-sacrifice in shielding the boy.

A great teacher will never interrupt, they will be there only guide and teach you, but you must do it yourself. In those precious moments, Shen was standing by, even protecting her from falling. But it was akali's choice to find another way to bring back the balance without killing the entity, or the kid. At the end of the clip, Shen even helped sprout the tree. That speaks volumes. Moral of this story, there are many ways to resolve conflict & bring back the balance according to the Kinkou Order, without killing. That was Shen’s test, & Akali's lesson.

I view Shen as very intelligent. The “test” shen was talking about was probably what she would do to save the kid. Shen kept trying to “bait” her into failing by pressuring her to let the kid die. To me, Akali passed shens test by saving the boy. When Akali demanded they bend the rules, Shen did not object, and actually began to observe her test. Edit: Shen was more than likely talking about restoring balance and not necessarily the kid as some have pointed out. Unless riot is painting a more heroic picture of Shen rather than just a crazy guy who doesn’t care what happens as long as the balance is restored.

Shen knew that planting those seeds would bring back the balance. That's why shen showed akali the seeds glowing in the spirit realm(saw this in the other comment) but akali was too amazed/shocked to notice it. And that why he said "the balance must be returned" he isn't saying that the kid has to die. He's saying that the kid must return the balance. Bring back to the nature. And also that's why shen says "with your steel?" because fighting the gaurdian with akali's "steel" wont help, it'll only make it worse. She needs to teach the kid to return balance. Plant a seed. Also that's vegan

I would call Shen a conservationist rather than a vegan, since it's all about preserving the balance of nature by realizing your part to play in it, but whatever works. In being a conservationist, one takes into account all aspects of the environment and adjust when nessesary, hence thinning overgrown forests, replanting after fire, harvesting deer and elk when the herd is so big that they will starve in the winter if you don't, being aware of predator numbers so you can be sure prey and predator are in balance with each other, ect ect.... We are the stewards, and our hands help preserve balance.
