It's hard not to feel like Namco upper management threw a skeleton crew at this remaster and then stuck them with an incredibly strict deadline. And that they, either through corporate mandate or sheer necessity (or both), then had to over-rely on AI programs they didn't really have the time, skill or manpower to properly oversee. Whatever the case, the end product displays a stunning lack of care or attention to a game that deserved so much better.

What I don't understand is how the PS4 version turned out better than the others. Was PS4 Namco's main priority for the game? Because that doesn't make sense. PS4 is basically irrelevant in Japan and Tales of Vesperia (and JRPGs in general) sold way better on Switch.

Man. Tales of Symphonia is not just one of my favorite GCN games, but one of my favorite JRPGs. I played the GCN version so many times back in the day. It's so sad to see this "remaster" done this poorly. It's fascinating how we got two noteworthy remasters on the Switch recently (Metroid Prime and this) and they are just polar opposites of what a remaster can be. One's a masterpiece, and the other is just....this.

Tales of Symphonia is my favourite game of all time. I've got it on GameCube, PS3, Steam, and now Switch. It has been a while since I've come back to playing it, and honestly I'm scared to play the Switch version, because of all these issues. This game should have had a full remake like Final Fantasy 7.

I have it. Only paid $16 out of trades. I'm betting on the hope that Namco will patch the shit out of this. Because I honestly stopped playing when I got to the Desert ruins. This is a great game and the way they did this is INEXCUSABLE, especially when Vesperia is a newer game with a better port. I still have the GameCube version, and I actually dug out my Wii to replay it.

If you ever feel useless in your life, remember that somebody at Namco was paid to bring downgraded, 30 fps Tales of Symphonia on the Switch (a console made by Nintendo) that came out over 20 years later than the Gamecube, ALSO a console made by Nintendo, that ran the game with full dialogues, shorter loading screen times and 60 fps. The more I look at it, the more it just becomes glaringly obvious that Symphonia was a stroke of luck for Namco more than their own technical genius.

I think fans tend to complain too much when it comes to remasters, but oh boy was this a darker shade of bad. Thanks for informing us! I played the PS3 version, and I didn't have any issues with it, but now I understand why I thought that conversation with Remiel was really awkward. Missing dialogue in what was essentially the most important scene of the first 10 hours of the game is totally unacceptable. They really should have patched it back in for the PS3 releases. Not fixing it for this release is child abuse of an IP.

Guess I'm still stuck with my GCN-copy of the game for my Wii. How on Earth did we end up to this point??! It's mind-bendingly infuriating and exhausting to watch Namdai strangely fumble even harder with this one giving this one fair amount of attention... now it's been almost a decade on how Symphonia just can't seem to catch a break with re-releases. God. I dunno if this particular one was just spurred on by the sad ripple effect of other VG companies thinking it's fine to make half-hearted or even outright broken remasters since past few years, such as GTA Trilogy or Nintendo's own remasters on Switch sans recent Metroid Prime and Kirby's Return to Dreamland DX. Knowing also how some of fans I followed Tumblr had been doing a cool fanart countdown for this release... it's enraging that all these passionate fans will be receiving at the end is such a mediocre port. They just don't deserve this kind of treatment with this much strong, on-going appreciation and support for this game after all these years. 😟

Symphonia is my #1. I own every Tales game, but I own every cover variant of Symphonia. They KNOW it's their #1 tales game. It's the tales game that put them on the map. Not only does it deserve the full remake treatment, at the VERY least it deserved a polish. They seemingly copy pasted the code from ps3 into switch and called it a day :(

16:02 Nintendo Switch games DO NOT save to a cartridge. They save to the internal flash memory on the console. Unlike the 3DS and older Nintendo Cartridges, the Switch cartridge only contains the game. Thanks for making this video. Shame the remaster is a disaster. Makes me wonder how the recently announced Baten Kaitos I & II remaster will go. I never played it, but it would be a shame if Bandai Namco ruined one of Monolith Soft's earlier games.

I know this video touched based on your comparisons between the Switch version and Gamecube version, but we should highlight that these SAME issues DO NOT exist on the PS4 or Xbox One version. The skits retain the background image of the character and the traditional black bar across a 3rd characters south based frame. They have the proper cracking in and out battle animations or fading to black animations. They retain the light blue background in menu options. For anyone wanting this game I'd truly recommend it on Xbox or PS4, as you can enjoy it similar to the steam version without any issues. It still has missing dialogue as highlighted, but the game plays as intended, aside that battles start like .1 seconds before the screen finishing transitioning in, and the camera doesn't pan right to left as a fight begins. Albeit better, its still far from a remaster and I just wanted to touch base on some better comparisons of alternate versions of the newer releases.

So that's why Nintendo ports of older games cost $60. At the bare minimum, we're getting the exact same experience we had on the original, at a higher resolution. We can't really guarantee that from other companies, can we...?
@Snotnarok
@Snotnarok Жыл бұрын
I know people from a Tales fan group that was defending this port before it ever came out, knowing full well it was based on a much disliked PS3 'remaster' which was ported to PC, which was also disliked and now we're here with the same remaster with some higher res textures for $40. Metroid Prime just had a graphical overhaul while keeping the gameplay the same since it was based on the same code somehow and that's $40 and also a critically acclaimed game. Crisis Core had much the same treatment and it did it far better than this and was also $40. Even with the janky up-resd cutscenes it still shows a lot more effort than this. For better or worse, they even re-voiced Crisis Core where the skits in Symphonia still aren't voiced in english. Mass Effect had a heck of a remaster that fixed so many gameplay issues & jank with 1 and upped the visuals but also included touched up sequels on top of it for $60. This is one of people's favorite Tales games, it's one of BamCo's most known game in the series and they kicked it out the door like this, knowing people would defend it instead of using common sense and having some standards. Most remasters bork something up, the lighting is usually it but this just was doomed from the start using the PS2/3 version as a base. The textures on characters look so ...awkward and borked, especially with the cellshading being so subdued. IDK what they were going for but they sure didn't get it going here. The loading is baffling too, it seems worse than the OG release? They were better emulating the OG, upscaling with some light texture filters than what they did here. (I don't mean visual filters or upscaling, I mean anisotropic filtering). And my sensitive eyes couldn't deal with the white battle transitions, I have to wear sunglasses even on a fairly dim day outside. I can't deal with Elden Ring's boot up sequence for every battle. This just is not worth it. I don't know why people defend this mess for $40. Bamco is better than this.

I had the pleasure of having a hand in the Vesperia remaster and seeing how they've treated Symphonia in comparison is just disheartening . I think it really just goes to show that they wanted to spend less money on pushing this out, and the missing dialogue is SO BAFFLING this is essential conversation! I've been hoping for a Graces remaster for years as it's my favorite Tales game but now I fear what would become of it...

I’m sorry for your pain; it’s absolutely unacceptable that the new re-re-re-release is in this state. Publishers have gotten VERY lazy now that “we can just patch it later”. Giving programmers and testers insufficient resources to do their jobs is just criminal. Can you imagine eating a cake that was only half-cooked? Watching a film that had missing effects and poor-quality audio? I never played the GC version, but I remember watching a friend play it, and it was amazing to see. I have the PS3 release in my backlog, hopefully I’ll get to it soon-ish.

Edit: I managed to find out why was Ramiel Dialogue was cut. I did taken a look at the Japanese version both Rerelease with Japanese Audio Option and the original Japanese release GameCube, he didn’t spoke on those two part of the dialogue that were cut in the rerelease, it was added in the English version for the GameCube. I do find that weird that was taken out or not added the Japanese audio in that part. (Super confusing)

The outline issues seem like an emulation/porting issue. Taking assets from an older console and trying to make it work on modern hardware. A few examples of official console games that do this would be games like Sonic Adventure when it got ported to the Gamecube and more recently, Super Mario 3D All Stars, which showed clear signs of graphical issues caused by emulation. Though the difference here is that at least Nintendo makes an effort to try and solve those issues while here... they let major issues slide.

Well they were able to get some of the VAs back to voice a handful of lines (new arte names for the most part and other new battle lines...maybe some more additional spoken scens too that I didn't notice) and said lines don't have the same quality as the OG scenes (likely due to using different equipment) and on top of that they likely messed up the sound quality of the older scenes too when ripping it from GC's audio to the PS2 audio (which is also why I find the 'don't have the source code for the GC version' to be a dumb argument as they'd likely need that or a copy of GC Symphonia that they could take it from to get said English audio...surprised anyone believes that theory given that specific fact: if they have the English voice acting they likely have the source code...as for why they don't use that version it's fairly simple: if they used that version you'd likely get a bunch of people complaining about any port based off it NOT having the PS2 only content added to that version...and if you need proof that will happen than look at the fact that English player complained for a decade before PS3 Vesperia released via Vesperia DE on current platforms, ya there's not AS MUCH content in Symphonia PS2 as Vesperia PS3 but still enough that people will likely complain).

After the insanely high sales of Tales of Arise? They won't see low sales as a slight on the Tales series, but they might look at it from the angle that Tales of Abyss/Symphonia/Vesperia and potentially other older Tales games aren't worth the effort. That said, the cost of this was probably not particularly high. It seems like they hired out to very amateur new coders with minimal experience. That's my guess anyhow. It's a tragedy as this game is one of my favourites, and I was really hoping to see Tales of Destiny's PS2 release finally see some love and come here, then a remaster of Destiny 2, then Eternia, as those are some of my favourite (and the changes to Destiny in its remake is amazing, taking a very slow and clunky system and making it smooth and speedy like Eternia, with a hint of the battle system style of Abyss/Symphonia/Vesperia). I don't get this, I'm hoping they're actually working to fix it? I doubt it given their treatment of the PS3 release. They had the ability to upload patches for that system. It does put a sour taste in my mouth, but I am happy to know I still have my GC (and Wii), and the original Symphonia. I pre-ordered this game the moment it was announced, assuming that given how well Vesperia was handled, they wouldn't do a drag and drop type of port of the PS3, with minor optimization tweaks...which is exactly what they did. This is one of the most beloved games in the series, even today, so it is shocking. Here's to hoping they actually do plan to fix it...and more importantly, how much dialogue is cut from the original experience? How was that even fudged up when they dropped the game disc of the PS2 version and used that as the basis for the PS3, and wasn't caught or fixed then?

I'm so glad I own the original version of this game and have basically since its western release. I've heard nothing but bad things about the remaster so far and I heard people were annoyed at the port for being 30fps, and not only did they make that mistake once, but now twice. It's also actually kinda sad that your video about the bad things of the port is almost ten minutes longer than your video on the ToS being best for Gamecube. Like, it just has enough to complain about that the video is that much longer. I admit this is one of my least favorite games in the franchise as a whole when considering my feelings on every game, but this one /was/ my first for Tales so it's a shame to see it treated as just another cash grab. Seeing this makes me want to... actually /not/ see remasters done for other Tales games. Ports that are just the exact same version of the old game maybe, but the problem with ports for games like Destiny DC is that the original game wasn't playable on a Nintendo system, so they'd have to re-release the entire game, and they'd probably never release Destiny DC in the form it was originally in. They'd end up remastering/remaking it, and lately remakes with Nintendo just seem to bomb. Bandai Namco in particular is obsessed with remakes though so they would probably do that anyway. Wouldn't be shocked /at all/ if we suddenly saw Phantasia get a remake, of theeee remake, of theeee remake of the original.

I don't get why these games started having to read terms of service now. It's not like these are games as service. It's almost like they want to annoy their customers. Before the HD era we usually never had to read terms of service before starting a game unless the game itself had some kind of online multiplayer mode, microtransaction, or something. Sent this video to Bandai Namco so they see their laziness and correct these. There's no excuse for why these are like this.

I want to see Tales of Xillia 1 and 2 ported over. i still think it had one of the best battle systems of them all. Don't get me started on Tales of Arise, for a high budget game, i felt they did the opposite compared to this symphonia remaster. They spent way to much time making that game look pretty instead of the battle system. it just felt very cut and dry and empty. I have played EVERY tales game, even the Japanese only ports. This symphonia remaster is not even going to make it to my switch, i'll just keep the ps3 one i have on my steam deck. I did love the GameCube version, but i did not realize just how much cut content there was from the American release until i played the first re-release. I guess we wait and see whatever they shovel out next.

The outlines look like they're not bound to the resolution. I'm not an expert, but my guess is that the outlines weren't scaled up when they increased the resolution. Maybe lowering the resolution makes them appear thicker? That's a thing I'd like to see tested. I think the Switch can go down to 480p, right? :D Ah, but maybe it's just the output resolution and games are still rendered in 720p and just downscaled.

I wish I had waited a couple days before downloading this game to hear the reviews because if I heard this review before buying it I never would have. I have only played up to the first seal and I haven't played anymore of it because it just sucks to bad. I hope these mistakes that you mention this video is something that can be fixed with patches. Also I forgot to add: The reason the voice lines are missing is because the English version added more textboxes to accumulate the English script (since English usually needs more words than JP to say the same thing). Nah mate. Tales of Arise sold like crazy. Even tho it was heartbreaking and an instant turn of for me that they cut Mulitplayer. sorry but there was no other JRPG series where you could Couch Coop a whole game and really play as a team. ToS and TotA where my entry point for JRPGS. And i played the HELL out of them.TotA was the reason why i learned english. Because it never got a EU/German release. So i had to buy it from the US and learn to read and understand english. But it did because it was one of the BEST games i had played to this point in time. And it was worth it. The struggles i had with my 2 cousins to understand what to do and where to go. Such great memories. And even to this day. Once every 2-3 years we get together just to play through Symphonia,Abyss,Vesperia, Xillia and Berseria. And its always a blast. so we where incredible sad to find out that last years gaming season was played without Arise because it didn had Multiplayer. So sad.

This “Remastered” was just Namco being lazy and doing this for an easy cash grab. Which is a shame; because they did a fantastic job with Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition. Tales of Symphonia holds the hearts for many people me included due to that fact that this got me into the series (though it’s not my favorite from the series). You would think Namco would put more care into this one seeing the game sold to a million on just the Gamecube alone before porting to other systems. This feels like they did this for PlayStation and then made the Switch version as an obligation; because the original was on a Nintendo platform and they would get blasted for not releasing it on the Switch after literally giving everyone the better version of TOV on all platforms. Now we’re going to hear folks say the see this is why the Switch sucks. No this is why you shouldn’t half ass your products.

"You would think Namco would put more care into this one seeing the game sold to a million on just the Gamecube alone before porting to other systems." No it didn't. It never hit a million until the PlayStation 2 version arrived in Japan. Third parties tended to port games from the GameCube because of that platforms low sales. Capcom did it a lot (Viewtiful Joe, RE4, Killer 7). Sega even did it (Sonic Heroes-onward, Super Monkey Ball). Again, can we stop with the revisionist GameCube takes? Tommy Tallarico got busted for that by hbomberguy during the whole Amico fiaco.

It's just so baffling that it turned out the way it did. You have the Vesperia remaster that had even MORE Japan exclusive content SEEMLESSLY brought over, and that ran significantly better despite being an entire generation above Symphonia. Just... man.
@ifrit1937
@ifrit1937 Жыл бұрын
Eh he/you forgot that at launch but Vesperia Switch also had at least a constant crashing issue at launch...it was bad enough I dropped the game completely and have yet to go back to it (granted I beat the Xbox 360 version multiple times so the ONLY parts I didn't play (though I saw in KZbin videos years before the DE version released) are the new content additions). Also...your argument about comparing Symphonia and Vesperia's generations doesn't really make sense tbh as Vesperia is from a later generation of console that likely fixed issues with game development that existed during Symphonia GC/PS2's time while all the assets were still fairly old for that generation of gaming (the game's art style is just really good...same art style as Zelda Windwaker which still looks great today even though it came out 7 years before Vesperia/2 years before Symphonia in 2001). Hell on Xbox 360/PS3 Vesperia it ran 30 fps on field, 60 on battle and was 720 p on Xbox 360 and 1280 by 576 on PS3 which means the only real thing it had over GC Symphonia was resolution which pretty much all games started changing the resolution to around 720p in the years in between these 2 games releases as the rise of HD started at closer to Vesperia's release than Symphonia's. And as far as PS2 version (that all later versions are based of) given the PS2 was weaker than the Gamecube (which was why all animations were remade from scratch and locked to 30 fps for the PS2 release) comparing that console version over the better (technical wise) Gamecube version is kinda ridiculous as when comparing something you take the best version, not the worse.

@@ifrit1937 I think that was a memory leak problem. Which in general seems very common with Switch games, especially ports of games that never have this issue previously. Even first party games, like Pokémon, Xenoblade and Hyrule Warriors port. I'm not a code monkey so I'm not sure if this is the game or the console, but the PC version didn't have this crash issue and i never had issues with Scarlet on emulator even after long play sessions. So I'm thinking it's the console not being able to sustain sleep mode for extended periods. The way around it is to not leave your console in sleep mode until your next play session and reset your system way more often. Though vesperia did have other issues, like the sound mixing, voice acting quality and direction, and odd changes. It gave me a good laugh with "Zod" instead of Zaude though.
