@@DontrelleRoosevelt No it wasn't. TLJ clearly shows Luke exiling himself because he felt like he failed Ben when he thought of killing him. The real Luke would never do that. He wouldn't think of killing his family, and he wouldn't abandon the universe. They set up for the real Luke in TFA, where Han said that Luke went out in search of the first Jedi Temple to seek knowledge. It set up Luke preparing to take on the First Order 🤮🤮🤮 and returning when he was prepared. TLJ threw that out the window to where Luke just abandoned everyone.

Wouldn’t say it’s selfishness. Luke lost his confidence in himself and eventually his connection to the force. He felt shame over his attempted murder of his nephew. Granted this fanfic is much better as it does makes Luke’s exile more of an ideological battle versus the canon uncharacteristic moment that he had. We see Luke exile himself not because he feels he failed personally and that everything he taught was a failure, it’s more of “maybe the galaxy is better off without me.” In canon he did not stop his nephew from becoming a fascist killer he knew what his nephew would do after their confrontation and instead of telling the truth to his family and friends and trying one more time to talk to Kylo, he left. Here, it’s a battle weary Luke who exiled himself after battling against a..very odd expanded universe character and he has a revelation that shakes him. That empathy/moral flexibility/insightfulness is more present here than the Canon

the Cycle will continue now till the end of time. but it's the lessons that are left behind that are passed down through the Generations, Revan, Anakin, Obi wan, Ahsoka, Darth Vader, Darth Malak, Darth Marr, Darth Bane, and many more. it's their lessons that the Jedi can grow. achieve true balance between the light and Dark sides of the force. when attachments are formed those must be balanced as well, you can't compromise love for the duty of a Jedi. it doesn't work like that and it will back fire. secrecy and deceit are what destroys a relationship. as it did with Anakin and Padme. but it's those lessons that people, that the jedi and even the Sith can grow from.

Outside of the Abeloth stuff, a scene like this could have literally saved The Last Jedi. Just a smidge of context as to Luke's mindset as to why he's doing what he's doing. An expanded universe take on what came next. Also, it would have been so much more effective if they'd used this kind of reasoning in the films. Luke Skywalker doesn't give up, he either keeps trying or he dies, even his nephew Falling and Luke's part in it shouldn't have changed that. I might even have accepted Luke's absence if he'd learned what it meant to make his wrongs right when he came back with Rey, to make right what went so wrong. But, no, instead we got aged wreck Luke Skywalker who made a last Hail Mary pass to give Leia more time to fix his mistake, if she could-even though he would never have done that...

IMAGINE...if Filoni and crew used this as a perfect context around Luke and Kylo Ren: The battle with Abeloth led to the deaths of Luke's fellow Masters and most of Ben's fellow padewans, so the two of them and the future Knights of Ren are the sole survivors. The desolation leads to conflict between Luke and Ben...eventually leading to the confrontation That Night. And THIS scene leads into Luke's encounter with Rey.

Like many fans I really hate what was done to Luke in TLJ . Not because he was a bitter hermit but because his reasoning was more out of the director subverting expectations. I wish we got a Luke similar to young Charles Xavier in X-Men: Days of Future Past - a man broken and void of hope due to what he had lost and his failure with Ben Solo . Rey could show up and try to give him hope but Luke would turn her away and insist the galaxy is better off without him endangering those he cares about by his mere presence. Then we could get Force ghost Yoda to be the one to get through to his student again : he could remind Luke he was once the embodiment of hope and the galaxy needs him to hope again . Yoda could also use his failure is the best teacher line to further illustrate his point. I always felt Luke abandoning his friends and the resistance betrayed his character because Luke’s devotion to his friends led him to defy his training and his mentors warnings to confront Vader before he was ready . Had Snoke been an actual threat and not just a pathetic puppet of Palpatine, it would make some sense for Luke to cut off his connection with the Force as a means to protect his friends and the galaxy in his mind . In short terms : exile himself out of necessity rather than choice (similar to what Yoda and Obi Wan did before him )
