Mrs Foster (Julie Harris) has a plane to catch to see her first grandchild. Her bumbling, sadistic dawdling husband appears to go out of his way for her to miss the flight.
Angry and frustrated, she ensures her passage.....

I was so stressed out watching this passive aggressive jerk treat his wife with no respect! He was a bully getting pleasure out of causing her anxiousness to become an obsessive anxiety about being late! Any normal person, the servants for instance, could see what he was doing. I kept saying out loud; "Just go without him? He can take a cab!" He went back in the house on purpose so she would miss her flight! I personally know a couple of narcissistic people like this. I call them "Gaslighters". I live by a strong beliefe that everybody, no matter who they are, deserves to be treated with kindness and maintain their dignity. And to stay away from abusive people.

IMO the lady was controlling in her own way - covertly if you will - allowing the elderly man to have his way; this while making him look bad (in a way gaslighting him?). Also - additionally to her being neurotic - she had a serious deficit when it came to being assertive / did not enforce boundaries. Being too agreeable is not in anyone's best interest. It seems in the end the wife shined as being the strongest controller; with the husband's lack of agreeableness and and low level of having empathy, costing him his life?

My father was like that, Rachael. It was weird. I cannot tell you how many hours of detention i served at school for tardiness, and jobs i lost until i finally managed to get my own drivers license and vehicle at 21! It didn't matter how much advance warning i gave him either. He couldn't seem to help but operate at his own pace when it came to other people's schedules.

@@budahbaba7856 People do differ though. Some simply are not as bothered by for example having to stand in line, or by being held up in traffic. Once asked my father how come he was as patient when having to run a long list of errands, and why he did not get upset in traffic jams, or when having to wait for others. He answered that 'one should not want to be in a different place than where you currently are'. It seems to be a matter of giving up one's control on the one hand, and on the other to not be as concerned about others' opinions (whether it be to try to make them happy/please them, or to be worrying about what they might be thinking of one). 'Fear of man brings a snare'...

It could have become matter of habit, after she was for many years responsible to see that everything was in order before leaving? In my experience children (and alas a husband) seldom are bothered by having a clean, neat, organised environment to return to, after going out on an adventure.

@@budahbaba7856 In your situation, your father's behaviour was driving you to differentiate away from him - towards independance. She wanted ALL their money; not only half - including cashing in on his life insurance policies... Probably yearning after the illusion of being completely in control? Feel rather sorry for the old guy. He was much older than her, and in a different stage of his life, since not wanting or probably even able to tolerate distant travelling. They seem to have been estranged, also since having seperate bedrooms. Sadly there was no one who even cared enough to bother to find out where he was. In six weeks no one had missed him.

Interesting to note the condition the lady was suffering from could well be 'stress-induced psychogenic movement disorder'. The psychological nature of the condition is not always an acceptable diagnosis, and it may take several appointments, before a patient may begin to understand the relationship between stress, the movement disorder, and underlying psychological and psychiatric conditions; such as anxiety, and depression. In some cases involuntary movements are linked to schizophrenia.

She could not have staged his removal, by avoiding him. By continual interaction with him, she was hoping for an eventual opportunity to present itself? She might even have staged the outcome by tampering with that lift. Was that the reason why she did not want the taxi driver to enter their home, since she already knew her husband would be stuck? She did not act surprised or sad at the end when she found him.

Something I find interesting is that a common trend in Roald Dahl's abused wife characters is that he says they are attractive woman who's faces are distorted by their husband's cruelty. Also this character wouldn't have been so demonstrative and loud, the narrator hints that her husband was physically abusive and calls her "meek".

Yes! If you let someone die it is murder. Like the episode with Joan Collins the stage actress that marries the rich toy maker widower. She gets caught cheating, he throws her out. She asks her "friend" that she uses and treats like dirt to help her in a ploy to fake a suicide attempt. Take a letter to the husband while she takes a whole bottle of sleeping pills in a hotel room. The friend gets the husband to rescue her? But, the friend calls says she delivered the note. But she didn't. She mailed it instead. Joan Collins dies of overdose. Now Rich toymaker is with the friend and gives her his dead wife's mink coat, telling her how wonderful she has been through his ordeal.... she is no better. She let her "friend kill herself" who didn't really want to die. That's murder.

Widowed serial killers may accomplish to put away several consequent husbands, before caught out. If she was brought to trial, the jury would find it difficult though, to not rule against her, since she had 6weeks to persist in her deception; where she could have alerted someone to go check in on the home - so they could free him.
