Besides them Speaking English, they also can Speak Spanish, Serbian, Bulgerian and some Russian. Skopje and Ohrid are good places to see for a couple of hours or days. I was there for 1 month in Skopje and 1 month in Ohrid but I meet many locals and became friends. They showed me good places in both cities. Good video!

The weather one is correct, It's summer rn and it's always 35+ celceus. Rn it's night time and I'm sweating like I'm taking a shower. And in the winter it's brutality cold. The only times we can get a breather is in spring and fall. But it's almost like the only seasons are summer and winter

I lived there for three months in 2018 and loved it. You mention not having much to explore but I spent many weekends exploring the mountain right next to Skopje, Mt Vodno. Lots of different trails on it with different degrees of effort needed to get to the top. Then if you carry on along the ridge of Mt Vodno you get to the countryside of Matka Canyon which is absolutely stunning. Admittedly not something you can do in one day of walking (best to get a taxi back to Skopje).

The part about Cyrlilic is true. Though most menus have English too, almost everything - billboards, advertisements, in shops writing etc is written only in Cyrillic. So I suggest learning it :)

The internet here in Macedonia is ok, it's probably the hotel wifi that sucks due to a lot of guests using it at the same time, and mobile data is extremely fast (not as fast as China or Singapore because we don't have 5G YET).

Not much to do!!! I was there for 6 months and feel like I barely scratched the surface. The biggest con for me is the pollution in the winter from people burning anything to stay warm. Also the people who ride around shouting "BUYING OLD STUFF!!" gets annoying, but on the flip side the city has an excellent recycling ecosystem. Almost eerything is salvaged and used. Super interesting and fun place to explore.

Summer weather in Skopje is awful, its either summer or winter, this summer is especially hot and it reaches 40+ C (104+f) quite often Food prices are alright, if you're local you could find some cheap places to eat One really big downside to Skopje is the air quality in winter, before covid-19 people had to wear masks in winter because of the smoke and overall air quality But despite all the bad things Skopje is a good city to visit and live in, nature is beautiful especially the Matka Canyon in summer! Highly recommend it to foreigners!

Internet speed on wifi is good, not great but good. At my home I have unlimited 30Mbps down/1Mbps up (upload speed is bad in my apartment unfortunately) and I pay like 500 denars (around 10$) a month. As for 4G, in most places is great and cheap. Telekom Macedonia (formerly T-Mobile) has the best 4G network in Macedonia, though A1 is not bad either. Greetings from Macedonia, and hope you visit us some day.

Is there a lot of construction 🚧 and noise? There was an earthquake in 1963 so lots of rebuilding since that monumental catastrophe. Are their buildings being retrofitted to keep up with latest seismic research? I am flying to Skopje from Budapest on an affordable Wizz Air flight. And I believe it has to do with (an intelligent) regard for water quality, as that has an impact on their beers. Two to three dollars for a beer seems expensive to me. Of course, if you are comparing it to Copenhagen or Geneva, it is cheap. But, if you are earning 400 euros a month, it is not cheap. In Portugal, for example, in a normal café in a normal city (not one on the beach) you would pay about 1.50 euros. I think a fino (draft beer) is even cheaper.

Those prices are only in the fancier cafes, most other places charge 1.5$ for local beer and 3-6$ for fancy imported beer. It's also possible that you got charged more because you looked like a rich foreigner.

I whent to lots of balkan countries, and Macedonia was my favorite. I whent like 6 years ago, and everything was really affordable even in more tourist area's and they dont want money for everything you do unlike some other balkan countries, where they charge you for everything. They also really know how to cook, and I didnt have 1 experience the food wasnt delicious. Besides there architecteur you have a wide range restaurants and cultural stuff. Its indeed a smaller capital, giving less to do, but I would say that those 4 days in skopje where my best holiday(and I have been on like 50 holidays in my life) and I wish to return one day.

Although i am a bit confused on the airbnb prices, i don't know how average salary has to do with the pricing. 700 dollars for an apartment is a pretty good deal to me. But again, cheap/expensive is subjective. Maybe for 1 person is expensive but if the flat is shared, i would say that is pretty cheap. And those prices vary from the amenities, location, size etc. And it makes sense that for tourists is a bit more expensive, long term rents for residents are always cheaper, because they stay for longer periods of time. Airbnb/booking listings usually rely on short term bookings, and Skopje is not a very popular touristic place, so i guess they don't have as much guests, therefore prices are more expensive than the usual rent. But happy to know there are ways to go around and find even cheaper !

Does anyone complain about hotel prices anywhere? It doesn't make any sense. I live in the Netherlands. Usually rent for a 1 bedroom apartment, depending where, but if i take the city i live, not Amsterdam, you can rent it for maybe below 1200 euros. Including bills. On booking, that same appartment would cost you above 2000 euros. Becuase you are a guest, not staying there for longer period of time. Same for prices in public transportation, 1 price is for residents, and another one for toursits. You are not able to get discounts on buses, trains, metro etc simply because you are not living there.

Find some who can read those apartment listings, and knows the neighborhoods, etc. He or she will help you ...

weather march is called the crazy month, this year was shifted a bit to early april. in the other months it does never get so crazy. Probably the coldest days in the year were in april. winters are cold, but not that cold, and they get warmer each year. summers do get hot. Generally september to december is fantastic. and after april to july. cyrillic it is strange, every menu is also in english and everyone speaks it, so you don't need it. not much to do covid. flights Covid. Skopje was the busiest airport in the region. You have Wizz Air lines that connect you to all Europe for like 25$ each flight. Like probably 40 cities in Europe. People from Albania, Kosovo and the whole region are going to Skopje airport, because it is cheaper and better connected. price of flat Someone tried to rip you off for 700/month. They heard US traveller and they tried. Lots of poor people trying to profit in any way. Generally 300/month or even less is normal. You can rent a small flat for like 200eur/month.
