Different set of rules, you know? NATO forces operate under a strict playing field while the Taliban (who are essentially the same as civilians) hold the populace in check with fear, religion and a zealous and even suicidal approach to combat. They never had to win battles (which they hardly ever did), just exist long enough for the only militant force to leave.

Trump met with the Talibans at Camp David to negotiate the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in February 2020. It was already planned before the new president came in. Biden respected the negotiations and withdrew within the agreed timetable. The U.S. army left 3 weeks before Kabul fell. The folks had 3 weeks to leave. They didn't. They assumed that the Afghan National Army would fight the Talibans. They assumed wrong. That's why there's such a chaos and everyone is taken back from this.

Shades of Vietnam? There's one even earlier from British history. Reminiscent of the Japanese advance on Malaya and Singapore and capture of Hong Kong. Churchill was very confident Singapore would not fall and dismissed the Japanese troops as a bunch of ragtag conscripts from Japanese coal mines. British generals believed the Japanese planes were far inferior to their Spitfires. The Japanese rode on bicycles they brought from Japan and reached Singapore in record time by cycling through the nights. General Percival had superior numbers and equipment but surrendered very quickly. Churchill, sitting in the safety and comfort of Downing Street, had ordered him to "fight to the last man" with total disregard for the local largely Chinese population. Days before, British civilians had quietly been shipped out to India and abandoned the locals to their own fate. The Japanese planes which had been thought to be flown by myopic, incompetent Japanese pilots had torpedoed and sank two British warships, HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse with great loss of British lives.

@@Lorddonen I won't even suggest that Sir Percival was a coward, let alone those who went down with the ships. But it's fair to say that at the time most British generals and politicians suffered from a huge dose of arrogance and false sense of superiority which made them underestimate the enemy and disregard for the people of the colonies they were supposed to protect. That dose may be little reduced today because the massive rallying of combined efforts of the western nations did defeat Japan and Germany in the end, but just a little, as we see today in Afghanistan and rest of the world.

I actually wonder how much of the Afghanistan military was also secretly a part of the Taliban for quite some time, if not the whole time. Basically, they could have easily played the US and other countries. Their mannerisms seem way too skilled for them not to have been in the military at some point. Would be surprised if they just switched sides once the US left, basically restoring the country back to how they want it.

I watched another video that stated the Taliban were warmly welcomed into Kabul and even showed it. Some of it is probably just an act for the camera but I still think they don’t care that the Taliban are there. If they didn’t want them, they would have fought or at least begged for the US to stay. I think it is best the USA pulled out and let the problem sort itself out, it is their country so they can do as they please.
