"They wanted to fight, they were just so tired and under supplied." Sounds like they didn't want to fight and so they didn't. Instead they took the opportunity to run. Taliban lives in mountain caves and uses shotout AKs and RPGs from the 70s but still fight. ANA has modern equipment and firepower, drops it all and jumps on the first flight out.
@randyroad74693 жыл бұрын
I completely agree and it's crazy that other people cannot see this. All I see is young, healthy men running away who could easily take up arms and fight for their country. And the ANA. What a joke, they couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag. Half of them can't even put a helmet on facing the right way. Maybe they are tired because all they do is smoke hashish and opium and sleep under trees all day. Under supplied my ass! They have top tier state of the art U.S combat equipment. It's absolutely a lack of will!

@@MrZZooh Right? Even in World War 2, when France surrendered to the Germans, the British opened fire on French ships so that they couldn't end up in German hands. The French ships were told to sail to a neutral port, to be scuttled or to join the British fleet in order to not let these ships join the German navy. When the French refused, the British sunk the ships. I know this isn't exactly the same thing, but the principle is much the same. When they thought the Afghan army would be able to fight off the Taliban, then taking those weapons away would feel like it opened the attack of: "You expected them to fight the Taliban but left them with no weapons?" however without a victory against the Taliban, the problem you're left with is: "You left all these weapons intact for the Taliban to take."

@HamzaKhan-bg9fh3 жыл бұрын
It is an oversimplification because it implies the fault is entirely with the soldiers. When in reality a great deal of it is with how the US set up an ineffective government, overlooked corruption, made it dependent on itself for logistics, and then pulled out as if soldiers would think that government was worth dying for.
@joela.40583 жыл бұрын

@@johnholmes2745 Bro, it's been 20 years. If anything this shows that no amount of years could've prepared Afghanistan for this. I spent a tour in Afghanistan and so i have some anecdotal evidence. President Biden even asked his advisors how long will it take to prepare the ANA to defend against the Taliban and none of them could give him an answer so he made the sensible decision and continued to pull out. If we spend a generations worth of time training and equipping an Army for it to still not be prepared then that is no longer on us, at some point the weight has to be shouldered by the Afghans.
@johnholmes27453 жыл бұрын
@@dylanbarnes4486 I concede it was correct to pull out, but logistically leadership fell short of departing effectively. Leaving an abundance of weapons at abandoned bases, afghans clinging to US aeroplanes while bedlam ensues at Kabul airport, and providing insufficient training to afghani forces could have all been prevented if more astute measures were employed.

@chulo97163 жыл бұрын
Exactly dude was contradicting himself so much😭
@mwhawley3 жыл бұрын
Yea that was so frustrating to hear at the beginning. Of course a large part of this failure was a lack of will; I mean, how could it not have been? We trained their army for 20 years, gave them tens of billions in equipment and on the ground support, and they still couldn’t last more than a couple weeks. I mean hell, that’s the definition of not having the will to fight. It’s also partly just due to the makeup of the country apparently. There’s been a lot of discussion this week about how there’s not really a sense of a cohesive national identity, but Afghanistan is rather a collection of tribes that people identify with on a small, localized scale. Thus, it’s exponentially more difficult to create a national army. But regardless, it’s an incredibly nuanced and difficult situation. All we can do now is wish for the best.
@SM-rk9wz3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. The interviewer say "Our own Ben Solomon was just in Afghanistan, and says the failure to stop the Taliban had nothing to do with a lack of will" and one of the first thing Ben says is "We didn't expect and we didn't foresee that these soldiers would just so quickly give up the city" It absolutely sounds to me like Ben agrees with Biden that it's a lack of will.

Exactly. In fact many of the ANA support the Taliban and defect to them. On paper, the ANA is much stronger, and if it actually fought, it would beat the Taliban. The catch is that they aren't fucking fighting - it's a bad joke. The grunts' morale is practically nonexistent, most are in it solely for the pay and many sympathize with the Taliban, the officers are corrupt and incompetent. The only ANA units actually doing something are the special forces, but they're far too outnumbered.

The guy being interviewed is extremely naive. Those forces were *ALWAYS* going to capitulate to the Taliban in a matter of months regardless of how advanced the weapons and equipment we gave them were. The previous government was more or less a puppet of the United States, artificially held together. In reality they shared almost no substantive policy differences with the Taliban besides their overt US backing and at least tentative willingness to allow democracy, and it should come as no surprise that their resistance crumbled at the mere mention of a US withdrawal. They had no will to fight because they were a product of the US occupation, not anything resembling the will of the people of the country.

Not everyone was running. While most of the regular soldiers melted away, only a few faithful soldiers were left to fight - mostly from the special forces. The few Special Forces had fought like hell already and when it was coming to the last fight they were ordered to withdraw because their superiors said so and they were evacuated on a military flight to other parts. The last of the remaining Afghan Special Forces have withdrawn to the province of Panjshir, which is mountainous even for mountainous - it is one of the few remaining places in Afghanistan that Taliban doesn't control (they are still there even as their government has collapsed). One has to admire these Afghan soldiers who remained faithful - sad that most of the army consisted of conscripts whose training and motivation was lacking.

A lot of the core special forces fighters were fighting because they had no other option. There are videos of the taliban executing unarmed afghani special forces. The taliban encouraged surrender by massacring those who resisted with amnesty for those who threw down their weapons. Because of the trouble they had caused there was little chance there would be amnesty for the afghani special forces. But the agreement to leave the airfield essentially gave these fighters who were most committed to the fight a way out of a helpless situation.
